Pros: You get what you pay for, Beautiful but small resort. The rooms were big, comfortable, and clean. The beach on site. The airport, bars, band parade, and other restaurants close by. The ATV tour excursion booked at the entertainment desk was amazing but be prepared to be out in the sun or rain ALL day. The staff was respectable.
Cons: Buffet was small & Food was a 3/5. Get to the buffet early especially for breakfast. I didn't care about the room service options at all. The adult pool was dirty. You have to claim lounge chairs on the beach the day before.
Disappointed with Sonesta prior to even arriving to the hotel. Due to the loss of a close family member two nights before our trip, my husband and I inquired to see if there was any way we can cancel the trip and get some money back or change the dates of our stay and pay the difference. This hotel refused to give us any money back and also refused to let us switch our trip for a later date. With that being said, we were technically forced to come to the trip, if not we would lose all our money. We get here and the customer service was not so great. We mentioned our situation and all they did was apologize. The breakfast options were slim to none, lunch was average and the restaurants were okay. Jings which was the Japanese restaurant was not good at all. The best restaurant in this hotel was Azul and it was nothing out of the ordinary. We also tried to book a massage as soon as we arrived, and we basically had to harass the employees to book an appointment with the spa, a simple yes or no would have been easier than just giving us the run around as to weather or not we can get massages. Over all this hotel needs major improvement in the the customer service area and the food,
This past week I stayed once again at The Point. Have stayed here countless times over the past five years, as I dive in Sint Maarten 2-3 times a year. (The diving is outstanding and I can recommend a great dive shop).
The hotel returned from the 2017 hurricane disaster well, physically. She looks just grand. The rooms are once again well appointed, spacious and full of every amenity I could imagine. The all-inclusive, for meals and alcohol is complete. Every bar (pool-side to beach-side to inside), every restaurant, every bartender, is eager to fulfil your liquid needs, including being able to mix just about anything. The restaurants are fine. There are two main; the AZUL, of which is just magnificent, and the Point, of which is second, but still fine dining. The Azul menu changes daily and is a 5-course experience you won't want to miss. You are treated to perfection dining and pampered. I must take this time to compliment the best two waitresses in the Caribbean: Shacam and Shaneequa. These ladies are as good as it gets. The chef at the Azul is a master. Never had even one average or poor meal. The view from the Azul, especially at night, is incredible.
The hotel is easy to get to from the airport; just 15 minutes or less. The hotel grounds are impeccably manicured and include a perfectly placed private beach and private pool area, adjacent to the Azul restaurant. The other two main pools are also well maintained, large and accommodate a ton of guests at any time. Live entertainment is usually each night and the hotel sports a rooftop lounge that is pretty cool, even for us old seniors. The rooms are cleaned timely and the room bars and friges are restocked daily. The beds are large, the linens and furniture nice, just what you'd expect. The room balconys are large enough to sit 4 people and most all of them have an excellent view of the ocean and/or the island.
If you rent a car for your stay, as I do, parking is available under the Maho resort of which is attached, but the Point is secluded from the Maho (and its thousands of guests), catering to just a few hundred adults only. I pay $30 a week for safe and secure parking, of which I can easily take the 5 minute walk from the multi-floor parking garage to the Point-and the walk itself is quite pretty.
Back to the wifi issues. After years, the hotel still seems unable to provide decent wifi service. They offer free (basic) of which screws up daily and drops off. Also offered is two more secure plans, for what I view as a little pricey-per day.
The check in desk staff, to be brutally honest, has gone to pot lately. I, and 3 others (airline pilots to boot) had to wait 45 minutes just to check out, as there was no desk staff. Two hotel employees approached us during this period, asked what we needed, each told us they didn't work in that area and couldn't help us. They left. Later, a brand new employee did his best (he just popped up), but he had no security/online clearance and could do zero. No manager was available; he attempted to reach them with no success. The airline pilots finally just left, and I checked out through The Maho desk. This has happened before, and seems to be a growing concern at the hotel. The front desk staff (when there) isn't well trained, doesn't put the best foot forward in resolving issues as much as it should, and the managers (day or night) are just hard to find. Otherwise, the staff at the hotel; the waitstaff, the cleaning staff, etc., is all topnotch-outstanding, and all of them go well out of there way to help every guest.
I'm booked there again next March, 2020 for another full week, as I can take a deep breath and get through the front desk issues, and enjoy the rest of the fine amenities this hotel has to offer. I'd five-star this hotel, if the front desk and wifi issues were resolved. Don't let these sway you away, for the hotel experience is otherwise just super. I've stayed elsewhere on the island and view the Point is still the best. The views, just by themselves, will capture you. If couples are looking for a romantic getaway, this is the place.
I was thoroughly disappointed over the continuing wifi connection issues the hotel has.

Amazing Location & Amazing Views
Bottom line: Book it!
I could not have been more pleased with this location. This resort is a 3 minute Taxi to/from the airport (you can actually walk if you only have a backpack and no checked luggage as that could be a hassle.). Further, once you're at the resort, you're a 2 minute walk to Maho Beach to lay and frolic in the waves, oh, and watch planes! I love watching planes and one of the best things about this resort is that ALL of the rooms face the beach and the planes' approach path.
December is a great time to visit as this tends to include less tourists, which means more space on the beach, pool, and fewer people at the bar. The service was always phenomenal. I'd be lying if I said the food was phenomenal, but I wasn't here for the food. There is shopping right outside the main entry, along with some local bars and restaurants. You can also walk to Mullet Bay, which is another, lesser-known, off-the-beaten-path, beach.
Great experience and would highly recommend. - Keep up the great work, Sonesta!

Which side of the Island is this resort on? French or Dutch?
5 years, 61 months ago
Sonesta Ocean Point is located on the Dutch side of the Island.
dutch 5imns from airport
Sonesta Ocean Point is on the Dutch side.
The Dutch. Near the border, on the southwest side of the island. Very nestled and peaceful. Near the airport, and the jets are constantly landing. You forget about that after a short while, concentrating more on the lush landscaping around the hotel, and the great views of the ocean.
Does Ocean point have a beach or do you need to go to another resort?4 answers
4 years, 60 months ago
Sonesta Ocean Point is set on a private cliff side with the Edge infinity pool overlooking the Caribbean sea and has access to Maho Beach's sandy shore.
yes it has a beach
The hotel has its own very private beach and private pool adjoining. These face the Azul restaurant and the views at night are incredible. Another pool is also part of the hotel, and sees some action from the Maho.
yes there is a beach and the water and views are beautiful
Why does the ocean/sea look darker at the Ocean Point vs Sonesta Maho Beach?2 answers
Water looks dark, not the blue/turquoise color seen in the Sonesta Maho Beach photos. Is this the Atlantic Ocean or the Caribbean in front of the Sonesta Ocean Point? Why is it darker than the water at the Sonesta Maho Beach?
4 years, 59 months ago
Ocean Point sits on a cliff, and is not beachfront, they have a large infinity pool for the guests to enjoy on site. Guests have access to Sonesta Maho Beach's beach facilities.
The water is the same at ocean point and sonesta maho beach. Same.location. it's Crystal clear water and not cold. Perfect water.
What is the view from the rooms?4 answers
What is the view from the rooms?
4 years, 58 months ago
According to the Sonesta Ocean Point's website, each suite features an ocean view. Please note that ocean view doesn't necessarily mean you are directly facing the ocean, but that at some point in the room or balcony you can see at least part of the ocean. Typically, a higher floor would yield a better view of ocean, which would be by request only.
The way SOP is set up - all views are of the ocean side...however, if you stay on floor 1 (with the swim up pools in rooms) or floor 2 - it may be harder to get that beautiful view of the ocean side...moreso you'll see the pool at the resort. I highly recommend 6th floor!!
Nearly all of the rooms face either the ocean or Simpson Bay. The first floor does not have great views, but a great walk out pool area, where you can sit in the water..in a chaise lounge.
Most of the rooms offer a breathtaking view of either the ocean or Simpson Bay, day and night. The first floor does not, but provides a walk out area to sit in a chaise lounge-in the pool area surrounding the first floor.
Does Sonesta Ocean Point allow nude sun bathing sense it's an adult only resort?4 answers
4 years, 57 months ago
There may be nudity allowed on some parts of the beach but the resort itself does not condone topless sunbathing.
no but if you rent a car you can find nude beaches all over the island
No, no nudity but we drove to Orient Beach where we could go all natural and rented 2 beach chairs w/umbrella for $15 per day from Pedro's. Beautiful water and beach. Spent 2 whole days there!
It does not, and My God, if nude bathing is your thing, go up the French side to Orient beach and let it all hang out. The beach of the Point, itself, is small (the oceanside one). The hotel shares the very large beach of Maho bay with the Maho resort, and it is not a nudey beach either and not packed, but does offer great sunbathing, and the jets land literally 50 feet above you. The experience is incredible-doesn't wake you if you fall asleep on that beach and you can walk it, right along the ocean bay, for about 300 yards of clean sand and good swimming as well. Check out my picture, taken from my balcony.
Does the all-inclusive include every restaurant and bar or are there additional fees for certain ones3 answers
4 years, 56 months ago
The all inclusive includes all the bars and restaurants however certain ones may require reservations and there may be charges for some specialty menu items.
everything is free drink and eat all you want go for a bbc the best drink on the island
Every bar and restaurant is included in the all inclusive. Food and drinks from each is included in the plan. We find it well worth it for both.
How bad is the airport noise really?4 answers
4 years, 56 months ago
While there may be some airport noise, the resort is only 3 minutes away so you can start your vacation right away!
I didn't find the noise distracting at all. If anything, watching (and hearing) the flights was actually fun! I never got tired of watching the planes come in!
Lots of reviews said it was a negative point to the hotel. I thought it was really cool to watch the planes land and take off just a couple hundred feet away from us. Planes didn't fly by on a very frequent basis, so it wasn't bad at all.
OK, here is the gospel of this question. The airport is directly adjacent to the hotel. Planes land and takeoff every five minutes of the day. For me, watching them from my balcony (while enjoying the ocean and a view of Maho beach) is just another treat. Noise? It's an airport. It's part of the nuance of the area. It's not a hinderance at all. After just a short moment, you really don't notice the air traffic unless you focus on it intentionally. Don't let this point derail you from this hotel. By no means does it or should it detract from anyone's stay here. In my room, with the balcony slider closed, I barely hear a plane at all.
can you snorkel from the beach here>?3 answers

Yes! But only if the weather is clear -- otherwise, the hotel will not provide snorkel gear.
The resort does offer Water activities such as:

You cannot. The hotel is situated on a volcanic point, above the ocean.
How is the Gym5 answers
How is the gym at this location?
4 years, 50 months ago
The gym was great - I worked out every morning. You walk in and are greeted by friendly and knowledgeable staff. They will help you train or leave you to your workout - as you wish. Lots of cardio stuff, free weights, dumbbells and rooms for classes. I never had to wait to use anything. Lots of room as well
No gym at Bolongo Bay
Please check with the resort directly for the most up to date information regarding fitness center. Their international phone number is: 1 721-545-3100
Good. New equipment; 3-4 treadmills ,ellipticals weights, other machines.
I find the gym outstanding. Private, with a great view of the ocean while you workout. The machines are both many and of great quality. Never packed; I can get on nearly any machine and perform a complete cardio and/or free weight or other kind of workout (machines are very similar to Gold's Gym type). The gym is spacious, very clean, has overhead TV's and I can ocean and beach watch while I work out.

There were rooms with two twin beds.
dress code for dining4 answers
what is the dress code for dining at Ocean Point? What does casual elegant mean? Is sport coat required for men?
4 years, 49 months ago
Men wear dress shoes, loafers or dress sandals; dress shirts with sleeves; and long pants or maybe a pair of Bermudas depending on the resort. Sleeveless shirts aren't allowed. Women can wear skirts, pants, or sundresses. Capris reside in a gray area and differ from resort to resort. No flip-flops.
The dress code isn't inforced. Shorts and a button up shirt is about the best dressed man I saw.
I stay here 2-3 times a year. The dining is casual dress, meaning a collared shirt for men and shorts and sandals are fine for all of the restaurants. Ladies, you always dress up more than the guys so anything you choose should be fine. Just point off of what the guys need to wear. This goes for The Azul and The Point restaurants, both of which are top notch dining, in a comfortable atmosphere. Go Blue.
It is a casual environment. No sport coats required. Nice shorts & shirt (golf/short sleeve) will work.
Is the airport within walking distance or does the hotel offer free airport shuttle?
4 years, 49 months ago
The hotel is within a 5 minute drive from the airport, however complimentary shuttle transfers are not offered by the hotel. They can be added through Cheapcaribbean for an additional cost.
no - but taxis are cheaper than transfers - just ask how much before getting in the cab - should be under $20 from Airport
Close, but wouldn't walk, no shuttle. Cost $4 per person via taxi
The airport is a 10 minute ride away. Shuttle service is available at a cost. We just rent a car for a few days and find the cost of the car no more than the shuttle service.
Ehhh, I'm not sure I would recommend walking from the airport although it was very close. There are no free shuttles. The taxis charge $8 from the hotel to the airport (which is literally a 2-minute ride).
Is there a dress code for Azul3 answers
Is there a dress code at Azul & are reservations required there?
3 years, 48 months ago
The dress code is Casual elegant, please check with the resort directly for reservations. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
No. Shorts and a golf shirt are fine for the guys. The ladies often wear dresses, but casual appears just fine.
There did not seem to be a dress code when we were there. Just no bathing suits! Most people were in a tank/t-shirt and shorts. This is a GREAT breakfast spot too if you want to avoid the chaos of the buffet (and all of the families that are at the buffet)
Junior Suite Double Beds1 answer
Cheap Caribbean this resort does offer double beds for 3 adults as I looked on Sonesta Ocean Point website. Why is that option not mentioned on cheap Caribbean? I think this is worth looking into as I am sure most adults would love this option who are traveling in groups of three. It would be nice If this could be looked into as my friends and would love to book this resort next year. Please include the junior suite double beds to your menu.
3 years, 43 months ago
We understand your frustration, and per our contracts with the resort, we are not contracts to offer those rooms. We deeply apologize. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
Is there free parking?3 answers
3 years, 43 months ago
Please check with the resort directly regarding free parking. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
Sonesta Ocean Point has parking $5 per day (at least that's what we paid). You must get a card from the front desk.
No. We get a parking pass ($30 a week) and park under the Maho hotel. The walk to the Ocean Point is five minutes, through a lush courtyard. Not an inconvenience at all.
Can people not staying at hotel use pool?3 answers
We have two friends that just moved to st. Maarten and we're going to visit but don't want to impose and crash with them. We do want to spend time with them though. Are they allowed to hang by the pool or join us for dinner? How does this work?
3 years, 43 months ago
For anyone not staying in the resort to utilize any of the amenities, they would need to look into purchasing day passes. This is something you would need to discuss with the resort directly as far as availability and pricing as not all resorts do this.
Only hotel guests (those with the magic wristbands) have use of the pool and other facilities. The hotel is gated, and the pool area is likely just for those who can access the gates via their wristbands.
You have to wear a bracelet while staying at Sonesta Ocean Point, it has a sensor in it that will also serve as a key and allow you to enter your room, it also allows you to open the gate to enter the pool. There are security guards standing by the pool gate, I’m assuming to not allow non-guests to enter.
I am traveling alone. Do hotels assign certain rooms to one adult only occupant?4 answers
I don't want a room with an inferior location or view, e.g., overlooking the parking lot or trash bins.
3 years, 37 months ago
All rooms at this resort are facing the ocean. The resorts do not discriminate against single travelers. There are tons of single travelers who may be there on business or just treating themselves to a getaway and they are not treated less just because they are alone.
Sonesta Ocean Point, all room overlook the ocean.
I traveled alone this trip and had some difficulty. The hotel prefers to book two adults to a room and discovered that booking for one was more costly. Suggest you do your homework when booking and comparing. The "Point" is an excellent location, still under reconstruction from the recent hurricane, and is in need of more time to return to her 5-star rating. But, she still possesses great value, even for one traveler.
In the adults only side at least, all rooms have an ocean view. And bottom floor rooms are all swim up. All locations are of fairly equal quality. I recommend visiting in the off-season. My visit in early October left a pretty dead resort. They said they were soon to get slammed. I got a room upgrade for free because so many were empty.
Is it possible to scuba dive?3 answers
2 years, 35 months ago
The resort offers snorkeling. If you would like to scuba dive, please check with the resort or the excursion company about scuba diving. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
Yes. We dive many times a year in Sint Maarten. We book our dives through Ocean Explorers. Owners, Jef and Lu provide incredible diving packages and are easy to find on the web. If you can't find them let me know and I will send you the link. You can do discovery dives if you aren't certified, and if certified, can dive the many, many wrecks on the reefs, including the shark dive on Big Momma's Reef. This dive is incredible. The staff at OE is well trained; the instructors provide individual care during the dive and/or let you wander a bit. OE has over 50 sites to dive on the south side of the island, all great. The dive shop is ten minutes from the hotel. You can rent a taxi or better, rent a car. Great dive shop.
Yes!! There are several excursions. I personally loved Billy Bones!! You can walk to Mullet Beach from the resort and the snorkeling is excellent! Beautiful fish and even a little octopus!!

Please check with the resort directly for the most up to date information regarding drink selection. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
Beer, Heineken or Coors light.
Liquor, top shelf!
It is not top shelf in the rooms. Be careful as the bottles in our room had been opened previously. We believe they just refil the bottles - they are not shooter size.
YES! They have top shelf everything!
I see the Beach is at Maho.... is that across the street?5 answers
is the beach private for adults only or because you share with maho, then there are kids allowed?
2 years, 33 months ago
No, it is right next to Ocean Point. There is no private beach for people at Ocean Point. In fact, you have a timeshare hotel as well as other hotels near by using the same beach! Children and all!
Sonesta Ocean Point is set on a private cliff side with the Edge infinity pool overlooking the Caribbean sea and has access to Maho Beach's sandy shore. Complimentary use of towels and chaise lounges at the beach. Since the beach is shared with Maho, it is not adults only.
Maho Beach is just a few minutes walk from Ocean Point. It is shared with the Maho hotel and offers great wading and swimming. The beach is long and fronts the airport runway-the jets take off and land literally 30 feet above the beach. For some, standing next to the fence at the end of the runway and being blown off the beach and into the water is fun-not for us older folks-we'd rather watch.
The beach is actually considered "off" the resort even though it is only a few steps away. Because of this, there are no waiters that service you drinks here.. there are also TONS of tourists/people from off resort there to take pics of the planes. Kids are EVERYWHERE.
The family resort was not open when we were there but I do not think there is an area for an adult only beach. There isn't a true beach at the resort.
