Great vacation, hotel decent but not my favourite.

This resort was okay but compared to other Resorts it is not my favorite and here's why: Let's start with the first thing food: food is good, flavorful but selection is slim. there's only three a la carte restaurants, the perk is that you don't have to reserve but the downside is that lineups can grow quickly. If you don't get there as soon as the restaurant opens you're going to be waiting at least 30 minutes to get in. We waited. 2 of us.. for 1 hr before being served at the italian when we got there at 7 30. the other perk is that you don't have to limit yourself in terms of how many times you can visit the restaurants though, it's basically first come first serve. The rooms are good, they're big enough but the beds are super small and the pillows are super uncomfortable, mattress is not the best, honestly I'm 5'1 and my feet were hanging off if i didnt sleep right up to headboard. The rooms are clean although sometimes they only come at 4:00 to clean them and restock the fridge but room nothing special. Towels smell nice and feel clean. Entertainment is lacking at this Resort. not only during the day but at night as well especially if you have kids. Yes they have live bands, yes they have music but for the kids it's pretty boring. If I compare this to Mexico when nightly they have a different show for the children it's much more interesting and during the day they usually have trivia and different activities and games either by the pool or by the beach. this Resort does not have that it's very limited and it's kind of boring. The mc during the day is not great and the entertainment donat last long. It feels more low key calm and easygoijg here versus a lively, fun resort. I feel its much more geared towards couples, adults.... The pool: The pool is quite small compared to other Resorts however the water is at a really nice temperature not too warm not too cold but it's way too deep and not inclusive to short people. I'm 5'1 and most of the pool is about 5 ft so there you go I can't even stand up comfortably. Forget about doing the water aerobics because I have to be on top of the stairs to be able to do that, was not convenient at all. They have water slides which the kids enjoyed and I enjoyed as well but if I had to change one thing about the pool it would be to make it less deep and bigger. Okay let's talk about staff and service. The service here is slower than I would expect and what I would appreciate. It takes forever to get a coffee or tea in the buffet in the morning. You have to wait in line to get into the buffet in the morning. That doesn't make sense to me and compared to other Resorts it's not common and I do not like it. I should be able to walk in, sit and eat without waiting. The staff in terms of friendliness are okay but honestly you have to really make conversation and talk to them significantly for them to actually be friendly with you. They do not smile there's a little bit of attitude and they are on island time so it's like as if we are inconveniencing them by being there. Okay let's talk about the beach now. The beach in terms of cleanliness is great in terms of water is great. the water is clear the water is warm, a little bit choppy but not bad at all but it is a small beach. Yes it's cool that you see the planes come down every 10 or so minutes and yes it's walking distance to the hotel but it should be bigger it would be nice if it was bigger and the fact that you have to get to the beach early in the morning to be able to get the guy to give you chairs and an umbrella is super inconvenient. Theres only about 20 umbrellas available before they run out. I'm used to going down to the beach getting a chair and umbrella no problem not having to ask the guy to bring it down for me to open up for me. This is something I don't appreciate when I'm paying the kind of money I'm paying for St Martin. Okay now let's talk about the kids club. Kids club is cool it's actually one of the nicest things about this Resort that we only discovered halfway through a trip. We could just drop our kid off during the day or at night and enjoy some adult time together without having to worry about entertaining our son. So this is something that's very positive about this Resort and that I didn't see at other Resorts and to be quite honest I feel completely safe to leave my kid for hours if I needed to. Note for parents, the planned schedule at kids club is rarely followed. Dont get hopes up for certain activities. This is unfortunate. There needs to be more elevators for the size of this hotel. Long wait times just to get to rooms. We were on 4th floor and could walk it but honestly. Not cool if on higher floors. Checkin during thursday or fridays around 3 to 4 on has a major backlog heading up to rooms..... plan to wait at least 10 mins just to get into an elevator. All in all I would not come back to this Resort I probably would not even come back to St Martin I have to say. If I have to look at the amount of money I paid for this Resort and what I got for the money it doesn't compare to Mexico. Mexico, cancun or riviera maya, is still my number one. you get more entertainment you get good food, you get more options at the restaurant you get better Service quicker service and that's hands down better for the price we paid. 2100 a person in St Martin and last year we paid 1400 a person in Mexico four and a half star Cancun and I would definitely go back to Mexico in a heartbeat. Royal solaris in cancun beats the sonesta maho beach. For sure. If we were able to get this Resort for the same amount of money let's say 1400 to 1500 a person I might reconsider but a $2,100 a person it is not worth the money. I was ready to leave after 5 days when i normally want to stay longer at all inclusives. Security is high in this hotel... Drinks are severely watered down. Hotel noisy and planes leaving early mornings will wake you. Mullet bay is a must.

    Food is horrible

Food horrible. I would keep looking for another hotel. The beds are not comfortable. Little entertainment. Furniture in room heavily stained.

    Just ok

Great location in Maho Village. Pools and beach amazing. No seaweed at Maho Beach unlike Orient Beach on the French side, which was covered in it! Service is probably the worst of any resort I’ve been to with respect to both the restaurants and servicing the rooms. The staff were beyond rude and seemed to be bothered when asking them of anything. I was astonished at the way some of waitresses acted in the restaurants - so rude! The only great staff member was the bartender in the Village Tavern. The in-hotel restaurants were pretty bad so opted to eat out every night for dinner, which was great. The pizza place on the hotel was pretty good as was village tavern, Could use room service options. The gym in the family side is horrendous and they should open up the gym on the adults side to everyone. This is a 3 star resort at best, but is one of the only AI option on the Dutch side (aside from the Divi which is too remote for my liking) and the water slides and beach for the kids outweigh the negatives. If you could try Moulin Fou for dinner in Maho Village - amazing duck, steaks and veal chop. One of my favorite restaurants in the island.

    Great experience

we had a great time on our honeymoon / my wife birthday. sonesta was clean and friendly. everyone was nice and accommodating. Now the best part of our trip was our last breakfast experience. I had to told Lorna I haven't had a carribean breakfast since I been here and the our last day she spoke to the chef and he made us some Johnny cakes and steam fish that was delicious. the best meal we had on the resort. That needs to be on the menu every day. we will definitely recommend sonesta to our friends and family. outside the resort the palapa and captain rib was amazing.
