Our favorite Secrets in Mexico

Secrets Maroma Beach is the fourth Secrets resort my husband and I have stayed at in Mexico (we've been to almost forty Mexican all-inclusives in total) and we'd have to say that it's our favorite Secrets because it combines all of the outstanding qualities Secrets is known for (excellent service, delicious food, immaculate grounds, etc) with an outstanding location on one of the best (if not the best) beaches in Mexico. We made this trip with our two adult children and their spouses and everyone (ages mid-30s to late-60s) had a great time. We all stayed in Preferred Club rooms (the first time we've done this at a Secrets) and it was nice being closer to the beach and having access to the Preferred Club Lounge. That being said, we would have survived just fine in a regular room. The resort is small enough that no room is really very far from the beach, and if you're closer to the beach, then you're farther from the lobby (which houses the main buffet, four of the a la carte restaurants, and the lobby bar with its nightly live music). After getting dropped off at the main lobby, we were taken in a hotel golf cart to the Preferred Club Lounge for check-in. The check-in process itself went quickly but our rooms weren't ready yet (even though it was well after the published 3:00 check-in time). As soon as the employee checking us in said that we should go to talk to her colleague to get our resort coupons (which I knew from reading reviews on Trip Advisor was actually the beginning of a vacation club/time share presentation), I told her that we were absolutely not interested. I also asked her to note that we didn't want any phone calls about the vacation club during our stay. The rest of our group said the same thing. Since our rooms were not ready, the person checking us in suggested that we go get lunch and that the vacation club salesperson would show us where the restaurant was. I said that we could find it ourselves using a resort map, but the vacation club guy insisted on accompanying us where he once again asked why we weren't interested in at least hearing about the vacation club. Not a great start to our relaxing vacation but it did get much better after that. We stayed on the third floor in building 26 and had a great view of the ocean. Our room had been recently renovated (I think buildings 20-27 on the south side of the resort have been renovated at this time; our daughter and her husband were in building 16 on the north side which had not been renovated yet). The room was spacious and clean, the bed was comfortable, the firm pillows we requested were perfect, and the room had plenty of outlets. The minifridge in the room stayed exceptionally cold. The bathroom was large and had two sinks, a jacuzzi tub, a good-sized shower with a rainfall shower head and a hand-held shower head and a separate toilet stall. The shower had good pressure and plenty of hot water and the shower and both sinks drained well. Every imaginable toiletry was provided: conditioning shampoo, conditioner, bath gel, bar soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, lotion, comb, razor, shaving cream, sewing kit, shoeshine kit, shower cap, Q-tips, cotton balls and insect repellent. The Conair ionic hair dryer worked well. Our housekeeper always did a great job cleaning our room; he even found an earring I had lost in bed and put it (with the back reattached) on my nightstand. Our nightly turn-down service was sporadic (missed two nights out of six) and oddly timed (5:50 PM when we were in the room showering and getting ready for dinner!). Note: our kids and their spouses each had swim-out rooms and mentioned that the marble floors were extremely slippery when they came in from the pool with wet feet. Everyone in our group was impressed with the food at Secrets Maroma Beach. Breakfast at the World Cafe offered plenty of variety (including quite a few Mexican choices) and attentive service. Unfortunately, we often had to wait 10-15 minutes to be seated for breakfast (dining in groups of two). Another option for Preferred Club guests was a la carte breakfast at Oceana from 8-10 AM. We never encountered a wait (although others in our group did) and appreciated the variety of menu choices and excellent service. I should note that we didn't see this Preferred breakfast option mentioned in any of the information we were given. We usually had lunch at the Barefoot Grill and/or the pizza place right next to it. The grill had burgers, hot dogs and French fries every day and a different option every day in each of the following categories: salad, nachos, burrito and whole grilled fish. There were lots of interesting, tasty choices. The pizza was cooked in a brick oven and was very good (like pizza you'd get in the United States). Oceana/Seaside Grill a la carte, World Cafe buffet and Preferred Club Lounge (sandwiches, snacks, one hot entree, desserts, fruit, etc) were other lunch options. In addition to all of the a la carte restaurant choices, there were four buffet dinners (three of them poolside) when we were there: Sunday – Mexican; Tuesday – BBQ; Thursday - international; and Friday – Italian. We enjoyed the Mexican buffet. There were lots of authentic Mexican choices from street tacos to tamales to churros. We also ate at the poolside BBQ buffet. The food was OK but we thought that the buffet line was set up oddly. The buffet had two sides (two lines) but the choices were different on each side. For example, to make a complete salad, you had to visit both sides of the salad station but this required waiting for an opening/cutting into the buffet line on the other side of the table. We did find that with a group of six we needed to go to any a la carte dinner relatively early (by 6:30 or so) to avoid having a 1-2 hour wait for a table. We ate at the teppanyaki at Himitsu which did require a reservation (make it early during your stay because the tables fill up quickly). The food was really good but our teppanyaki chef must have been new because his presentation/repertoire of tricks was limited. We also went to Bordeaux where we thought the food was good but the portions were very small. We each ordered two appetizers and an entree and we were glad we did. Our waiter Santiago was genuinely friendly and funny. The other two a la cartes we tried were the Seaside Grill (steakhouse) and Portofino (Italian). Both were good with plenty of menu choices and attentive service. The only two bars we frequented were the Lobby Bar and the Barracuda Bar (by the beach). Service was good at both. We appreciated being able to request top shelf liquor and felt that the drinks were decent strength. The margarita lovers in our group noted that the margaritas at Secrets were the best they'd ever had at an all-inclusive because they tasted like they were made with real lime juice and not a mix. The beach (with its gentle, no rocks water entry) was the highlight of Secrets Maroma Beach for us. The beach had oversized, widely-spaced palapas so it was easy to stay in the shade all day. There was even an employee to help arrange and put towels on your (padded!) lounge chairs. We decided that the best part of being on the beach was the service provided by our beach waiter Benito. He was absolutely the best beach waiter we have ever experienced. He greeted everyone as they arrived at the beach, brought bottles of water to everyone in his coverage area first thing in the morning, wiped all of the tables under the palapas (we've never seen that done before), and checked on us constantly (but not annoyingly) to see if we needed anything. He was amazing! We did tip him (as we did many other employees) but I honestly think his service would have been just as good if we hadn't tipped. I told him that I appreciated how hard he worked and he just smiled and said, “I love my job!” and it was easy to tell that he really meant it. As far as entertainment, we noticed that the team encouraged guests to participate in activities but were not pushy. We didn't join in any daytime activities but we did enjoy the live music in the lobby from 7:30 till about 9:00 every night. The talent seemed a cut above what we've seen at other resorts. We also watched the fire show (after the BBQ buffet) and part of the circus show (after the international buffet). Both were entertaining. Our favorite entertainment was the Moonlight Party on the beach. It was a concert with a guitarist and a vocalist who were both very good. They had set up lounge chairs for guests to sit on and passed out blankets to everyone. Thee was even a temporary bar set up and waiters brought drinks to the people watching the concert. Fun night! Every staff member we encountered was friendly and helpful. Our building 26 concierge Roberto was very professional and eager to help with absolutely anything we needed. He knew our names after the first day and always greeted us when we walked past his desk. Miscellaneous: The resort is big enough to have lots of choices (restaurants, bars, activities, etc) but not so big that you have to walk a half mile to get from the beach to the lobby (there really are some resorts that are that big!). The landscaping and grounds were well-maintained. Wifi was strong throughout the resort, even on the beach (except for the far south end). No wristbands or towel cards were required. We would definitely return to Secrets Maroma Beach. We decided that it's one of our top 3 favorite all-inclusives in Mexico.

Best vacation ever

We just got back from our vacation at Secrets Maroma Beach, and we had a fantastic vacation. We’ve been to other all inclusive resorts, including two Sandals resorts, but Secrets blows them away. We renewed our vows on this trip, and Arely and Nick were amazing. All of the staff goes above and beyond to make sure that you have a wonderful time. This is truly a five star resort. We decided to go with a swim out suite in the Preferred club, and it was worth the extra money. We have nothing but great things to say about this resort and are already planning another trip. Thanks for making this a vacation to remember for a lifetime.

Amazing honeymoon

My husband and i traveled to secrets maroma for our honeymoon. I have stayed in other resorts in the same brand and am never disappointed. The staff is beyond friendly. The food, including the Italian which I usually find to be the worst in all inclusives was fantastic. They are all first come first serve so keep that in mind. Most nights we had no wait at all. The Japenese place was the most packed for good reason. You do need a reservation for hibatchi and I recommend booking it in advance because the spots fill up quickly and we were only able to get a 9:45 reservation. The rooms are extremely comfortable and gorgeous. The beds are fabulous. We did preferred club members and that’s the one thing I would change. In the preferred club lounge you could enjoy top shelf alcohol however there was a man who was harassing people into buying a timeshare there and he didn’t let up which caused us to avoid going in there. I think it was a waste of money and we would of had just as much fun without spending the extra money. Other then that I would highly recommend this place. You won’t be disappointed. We want to come back for our one year anniversary.

What's to Love

Being spoiled by the sparkling champagne and cool towel upon arrival.

Chic, breathtaking interiors in warm earth tones with stunning vistas of the turquoise sea.

Powdery, velvety sand that never gets hot.

The cushy spa that boasts a spa garden, hydrotherapy circuit and outdoor massage cabins. Sa-weet.

Free round of golf at the Grand Coral Riviera Maya that was designed by PGA champion Nick Price.

Dining under a private palapa at Oceana. Rock star existence, it is.

The lit tennis courts - who doesn't love this?

What We'd Change

Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun does enforce a dress code for some of their more upscale restaurants, but it gives you an excuse to shop.

Why You Should Go

The resort is located 20 miles south of the airport so you are heartbeats away from your first delicious vacay cocktail.

The French restaurant, Bordeaux, has a wine cellar. Not too shabby.

Zip lines, swim with dolphins and eco-adventures are near - there might be a fee, but go for it. You only live once.

Chichen Itza and Coba Ruins are near - both are historical and beguiling.

Water sports out the wazoo: sea kayaking, catamaran, water skiing, snorkeling and windsurfing.

When you've had enough sun, you can check out archery, dance lessons, and billiards.
