Room for improvement

This place has a ton of pros such as: food, a taco truck in the middle of the resort? Burritos/tacos/creperie that’s open late?! A coffee shop?! And to top it off the restaurants (including the buffet) were open late too. There was something for everyone even the picky eaters. The staff was friendly. There was a lot of entertainment for kids and the wildlife was awesome (look out for the monkeys). Now though I did enjoy my lazy stay (seriously, it was the laziest week of my life) there were some things that really bugged me and some that really need improvement. For example the nightly shows are really not great. I was here for 3 Of the shows each as boring as the next. A Michael Jackson tribute .. again? Ac/dc tribute, really? Which was just a band playing ac/dc songs and a circus performance that was taken out of the 1920s, basically a bunch of people doing tricks that only impressed the young ones. Only one pool in the area closest to the beach that could be enjoyed by all, there was another one but as with many things in the resort it was “members only”. After a certain point we pretty much stayed away from everything as most things were “members only” including a whole section of the beach seating area dedicated to members only. Pretty sure the adult section was also just members .. again didn’t bother with it as we got tired of hearing it was reserved for the elites. Now, this is what bothered me the most of the resort. There was a nice club/disco with its own bar and a dj booth. Unfortunately it was just a guy seeming to play the same CD over and over again. Seriously at some point it was even restarted and every night it was the same music. Please hire a proper DJ! Not all of us want to sleep by 10 when the show ends. Overall the stay was relaxing and gluttonous. I do feel that if they improve the nightly entertainments this place would be worth coming back to.

Nice first trip to Mexico

This was my first time and my boyfriends second time to Mexico. We really enjoyed our trip, however if we return to Mexico will most likely try another resort. The resort and staff were very nice however I think there is room for improvement. We stayed in the 21+ older section which I would recommend to anyone without children. Our room was beautiful and overlooked the pool, but did smell a little musty and I was told it was due to the humidity. The 21+ Older section has a private breakfast area & pool for guests of age with a swim bar, volleyball net and bbq daily for lunch. This is where we spent most of our time and made quiete a few friends. If you stay in this section just be prepared to walk (8-10 min) or catch the golf cart if you are planning on going to the family/main side of the resort or beach. There is quite a bit of neat wildlife to see on the walk. I am somewhat of a picky eater but did try quiet a few restaurants at this resort. My boyfriend and myself both agreed that the food quality at this resort wasn't awful but definitely could be better. Our favorite place out of the 5 places we tried was the main buffet and burrito place. We went to the main buffet for breakfast and dinner once we tried it. It has more of a variety and what I thought was the best quality food at the resort. The alcohol choice at the resort were great, and the drinks were made normal/strong - no watering down. The beaches were very pretty but did have seaweed which is completely out of the resorts hands. We still went in the water just had to swim out past the seaweed. As far as pushy sales people, we did not encounter too many. The only people we were approached by daily was the staff from the spa. You just have to be stern and too the point if you are not interested. We had some photos taken while in the adult pool but the prices they were asking for the photos were a little absurd. They wanted $20 a picture so we decided to pass. We chose to go on the whale shark excursion while at the resort which was an amazing experience that I highly recommend. Overall we enjoyed our stay here but didn't fall in love. We will likely try another resort next time.

Love Sandos Playacar!

Lengthy review but I hope it's helpful! This was my boyfriend's and my first trip to southern Mexico and our first all-inclusive experience. We really loved it. We're younger Americans, work hard and live in an expensive city, so we don't take trips like this often. THE ROOM- we stayed in the beach family section. Apparently the oldest part of the hotel (2007) but perfectly adequate for us. Nice bathroom with a modern shower and sink, room was simple but nice and housekeeping was great. The beach section location is perfect- steps from the beach and main pool, close to most of the restaurants and the gran plaza, basically close to everything. We were on the top floor and woke up a few times to monkeys howling in the trees by our door! There is a lot of fun wildlife around - monkeys, birds, agoutis (large rodents), random domestic house cats, iguanas, even a peacock. THE BEACH- beautiful beach, even during rainy season. Pretty clean, saw almost no trash which was great. There are lots of beach chairs and some hammocks around for Sandos guests, a beach volleyball court set up, and they do activities on the beach daily. Sandos is on the end of the resort strip, so it felt quieter for sure, which we loved. You can walk pretty far down the beach both directions. It gets a little seaweed-y during rainy season, but this only happened to us one day. Otherwise nice. THE RESORT- nice resort, clean, family-oriented (they do have adults-only sections), pretty big, easy to get around. There were a few small areas we could tell were older or maybe being renovated, but the majority was really nice and modern. The staff are amazing, so friendly and kind and genuinely will do whatever they can to make your stay wonderful. Please tip the staff. I don't know if this is expected, but recognizing their hard work is always appreciated. USD is gladly accepted throughout the resort. We really enjoyed the restaurants, all-inclusive is the only way to go. There are bars scattered all over too so taking advantage of all-inclusive drinks is pretty easy. Are the house margaritas probably made with Sauza gold? Yes. Did I care? Nope. We loved El Gaucho steakhouse, Asiana Asian restaurant, il Piemonte Italian restaurant especially. The buffet is easy and has a lot of options. We always went there for breakfast. Chayita has great burritos (similar to popular fast casual burrito chains in the States), and Cupcake Cafe was nice for a cup of coffee anytime of day. A couple of the restaurants were closed while we were there, not sure if they were renovating or just close some during off season. No big deal, there were plenty to choose from. The evening shows are somewhat cheesy, kinda to be expected though. More for kids I think. Although I did love the Latin Band that often came on after the main evening show. We never saw the nightclub/disco open. Not sure if it was because of it being off season or if we just gave up and went to bed too early... probably both. I read in another review it opens at 11pm and we were always in bed by then! The pools are great and very clean except for a little beach sand here and there, which we all probably tracked in so there's only so much they can do. The landscaping and nature are really beautiful. The resort felt pretty quiet and peaceful. I went to the spa one day and it was lovely, definitely recommend for relaxation. You can make massage, facial, and beauty (nails, eyebrows, haircut, etc.) reservations once you get to the resort. Spa staff are often around booking massages and that's how I did mine, very easy. ATTRACTIONS- I don't know because we just wanted to relax and didn't go on any. Xcaret is really popular around here, along with Tulum, Chichen Itza. There isn't really easy access to the town of Playa del Carmen from this resort, I think because there isn't an obvious walking part of town. t's not like Cancun where you can walk into a downtown area... most of the hotels including this one are pretty hidden from the main roads, and I didn't see much that looked walking-friendly or touristy when we were going to and from the resort. RAINY SEASON- We went during rainy season for better prices and fewer crowds, which definitely paid off. I read reviews saying you had to get out to the beach by 6am to get a chair and make reservations at all the evening restaurants to avoid waiting for hours.... not during rainy season, my friend. We just cruised in and out wherever and whenver we wanted. The water was warm and the sand was cool. Still got good beach time. It wasn't so hot either, which was really nice. Actually, scratch that. Don't come during rainy season... I want it to myself. Cons of rainy season- it rains, obviously. If you're there 2 weeks or something, probably doesn't matter that much as you have plenty of days to do stuff. When you're only there 3 full days like us and 2 of them are half rain... it makes a bigger impact. And there is the potential of being there during a tropical storm/hurricane. Just stuff to be aware of. But overall we love being there during off season. Overall, we loved Playa del Carmen and this Sandos resort. Would definitely return to other Sandos locations in the future because of how well we were treated, and would return to this area too.

The All Playa Experience has themed beach parties every day of the week, with music, food and games that get downright competitive! Oh, and the beach is to die for.

What We'd Change

I found in order for me to get my favorite beach chair every day, I had to go to the beach at 6:30 to get the best seats (as I love lounging on the beach!)
