Our trip was too short

We recently stayed - May 2018. Husband, daughter, daughters boyfriend and myself. We had two rooms. We stayed in a suite which is 100% worth the upgrade! The view was absolutely amazing! I sat out on the deck every night and every morning listening to the waves. The music from the square was similar to elevator music. Loud enough to hear but quiet enough to still enjoy the waves. I have read many reviews that said it was too loud. If you are there to go to bed early then I would recommend a standard room which isn’t on the outside. The room was clean and no bed bugs. Somethings are worn but again, think about how much time you are actually in the room. We did leave a tip daily with a note for Agua por favor and were given more than enough water bottles. We never did drink any soda, coffee, beer or liquor in the room so I can’t speak of them. The chairs around the pool were exactly what you would expect. There were definitely a few families that snagged 75% of the chairs around the kids pool but to be honest we had a harder time getting a seat at the swim up bar than any other place. The beach is great!! No complete shade unless you have an umbrella but partial shade with most chairs and some in full sun. If you want all sparkling new and the best of the best this is not your place. If you want a relaxed, peaceful and fun place then come here. It is family friendly and honestly only twice did we see someone who was ridiculously drunk. The beds are not as bad as some of the reviews I read but the pillows are. They are quite thin, next time I would bring my own pillow.

Great place for the value

We stayed here from May 5th - 11th, 2018. We booked our vacation about 2 months before our trip. Our main determination on this area was purely based on travel time. We live in Northern California so a short travel time was important to us. This vacation was for our 2 year wedding anniversary. The Lobby: When we pulled up to the resort we were very impressed with the entrance. The entrance was open aired, art deco, and just beautiful. There were plenty places to sit and relax in the large lobby area. We were able to immediately check in. Check in: It was around 4pm when we checked in. The front desk personnel were so friendly. They provided us with water infused with lime that was cold and refreshing. Check in is at 3pm so I was expecting our room to be available. (I planned our flights around making sure that when we got there, we could immediately check in and get into our room) However, our room was not available. The person was very friendly and was radioing someone as he was trying to get us into a room right away. I advised him it was out 2nd anniversary vacation and I wanted a room with 1 king bed as opposed to a double full size bed room (bed options are not promised but I did notate our reservation with our request). He confirmed he had that noted and that is what he was trying to verify. He stated he got us a room right in the middle of the resort with an ocean view. (I certainly hoped so since I paid for a junior suite with an ocean view.) The room: Once we got our key (Actual metal key, not a key card. This did make me miss the key card) we went straight up to our room. The room was nice and cool when we walked in. It had 2 full sized beds pushed together, individually made. We tried to unmake the beds, so we could sleep in one big bed together but the crack between the mattresses was so very uncomfortable. So, my wife and I ended up sleeping in different beds the whole vacation. (which was not good for a wedding anniversary vacation.) The view from our patio was beautiful. Since we were on the 6th floor we had a good overview of the resort, the beach, and the bay. The problem with our patio was that the sliding door did not have an airtight lock, it had a metal slide that was screwed on the back end of the sliding glass door. So when our neighbors smoked on their patio, our entire room filled with the smell of cigarette smoke (as an ex-smoker, it was very disturbing). But we didnt spend much time in our room, outside of showering before dinner and sleeping. The walls to the room are also very thin. We could hear everything when our neighbors partied in their room, to when people would walk loudly through the hallway, to everything going on in the main plaza of the resort. There were nights we had to go to bed early to get up early for an excursion and it was really hard to go to sleep because we could hear everything, from the music playing in the plaza to the people talking in the rooms next to us. The other thing was the key to our room sometimes would stick, not turn, and/or wouldnt come out of the lock. So when we'd come back to the room after a day by the pool drinking, or a long day on excursions, the key would be uncooperative so it would be really frustrating. The pools: The pools were nice and fun. The activities crew did a spectacular job trying to keep people entertained and engaged. Only 1 of the Jacuzzi tubs actually had jets flowing and the jets were flowing in the middle of the tub, not on the seats were all the jets were. The other one had hot water flowing through the jets but the jets were not turned on. We spent most of our time in the pool watching the entertainment crew doing their thing and talking to other people. We went in the kids pool, the pool with the slides, once. Because we wanted to go down the slides. The slides were fun! We really didnt hang out at this pool at all. The Bars: The bartenders in the pool bar were amazing and worked so hard to keep the drinks flowing. The bartenders in the bar by the stage, La Boheme, were also amazing. We would sit at this bar and watch the show at night, so we'd order our drink and turn our chairs to the stage, when we'd reach back for our drink, it was always full. They would refresh it without us even asking! That was great!! We hung out at the main plaza bar a few times also. Those guys had a great system for how to work the bar as it was the biggest bar at the resort. The food: The food in the buffet was good, not great, but expected for a buffet. There were plenty of options and it was replenished quickly. The servers were amazing! They kept the table clean of used plates and trash, they kept you drink cups full, they did a great job. The food at Nervana was delicious, it was all Asian inspired. The tuna sashimi was delicious. The rolls were just OK, the wife tried a roll that had a strawberry on it and she liked it, I didnt try it. The little dim sum dumplings were good and the chow mien was good. They also had a yellow curry that was good. My tummy, however, did not like any of it. The food at Le'George was amazing! We actually ate there twice. I had the tuna and hummus appetizer first with the steak as my entree. The 2nd night we ate there I had the garden salad to start and the shrimp linguine as my entree and they were both delicious. The wife had the pumpkin soup and the green curry one night, both of which were delicious. Lunch was standard in both the buffet and the Flamingo. We primarily ate at the Flamingo for lunch. They would have a guy at a taco station, those tacos were great! I could have ate those the entire time and been perfectly fine. Dinner at the Flamingo was really good! We would try to get there at around 715pm and be sat near the beach so we could watch the sunset over the mountains as we had dinner, it made for a nice romantic dinner. The ribeye was really good. My wife had the ribs and she really liked them also. The Shows: The shows were really entertaining. From the men vs women show to the Cabaret show to the La Cirque show. For such a small stage and crew to entertain the entire resort, they did such a great job. Overall: I would definitely come back to a RIU resort, but maybe to the RIU Palace or RIU Jalisco which was so close to this resort. Maybe we'd come to the RIU Palace so we could have access to all 3 other RIUs. Although we did spend 3.5 out of our 6 days out of the resort, I would recommend this place for a smaller vacation, maybe a long weekend away.

Fun girls trip!

As soon as I walked in the first thing I noticed was the beautiful smell of flowers. They had a huge set of flowers as soon as you walked in. Every day it was a different one which I loved. The front service people were very nice and helpful. The room were very clean and were cleaned everyday. You have to request it though, by putting the green door hanger. The rooms were very cold but you had access to change the temperature. The pools were always very clean but you had to be there early to get a chair. The sand had some rocks but the water was nice. The food selection at Don Rafael was always very good. The only negative experience I had was with a lady that worked there that rode the elevator with us, she made this annoyed face with me and my friends when we got on the elevator. Other than that it was a very pleasant experience.

What We'd Change

Downtown Puerto Vallarta's shopping and nightlife are quite a drive, but Nuevo Vallarta marina is a closer alternative that's just as much fun.

Get up early to snag a beach lounger. They go fast.

You can go horseback riding in the Sierra Madres, a bucket-list-worthy thing to do.

If you're more adventurous, there's bungee jumping. Hang on!
