Jan 18, 2026Beautiful and Fun Resort
My wife and I spent a week at Riu Playacar two weeks ago. The grounds, rooms, pools and beach are absolutely beautiful. The staff were fantastic no matter where you go on the resort. There are lots of places to eat at about anytime. The lunch buffet and dinner Steakhouse are by far the best. Snacks in pool area were also great. We really disliked the Asian and Mexican restaurants. Lots of small wildlife running around and on our last day we saw the monkeys walking by us. There is a good shopping area across the street with a 7-11 and pharmacy. That was helpful. Also we took a 20 minute walk and were right in heart of 5th Ave in Playa Del Carmen. We really had fun shopping in that area. We did one excursion to XPLOR and had a blast. We are going to try and return with all of our kids and their families next year. Overall we loved this resort!!

A perfect stay for relaxation
This was my 2nd stay in a RIU hotel in Mexico. We stayed here for 5 nights after exploring Mexico City. After our first tiring part of our vacation RIU Playacar was just what we needed to regain our peace of mind. We got a very nice room close to the pools and beach. The rooms were sufficient and cleaned daily with great care from the staff. The hotel offers a wide range of food and drinks. You don't have to expect high end food and drinks, but it all tastes good and is served by very friendly people. It is also great to have the beach this close: you just have to go to the pools and next to it is already the private beach. If you go there early enough you can have every possible seat: a seat in the sun or under the palm trees. Every night and during the day the hotel also has events in the different bars, pools and on the beach, so there is enough entertainment. The hotel even thought about the birthday of a family member by bringing balloons and a cake! Thank you for our great stay and we will surely go for a new RIU stay in the future.

Another great December holiday
Another great time at our 'second home' Riu Playacar from 5-25 December. We had a great and very clean room in block 7 above the restaurant facing the main walking path. What make this hotel is all the great staff members working almost 24/7 to make you feel a VIP. Lots of repeaters from all around the world say a lot about a hotel. Positive : never problems finding empty beach chairs , lots of choices in food and drinks from good quality , whole hotel very clean , no stomach problems , great animation team, live music and shows and of course the Neon and White parties. Great location to start your visit to playa or excursions. Cannot find anything negative. Looking forward to go back in December !

The Good: • Beach (10/10): Gorgeous water and sand, plenty of comfy chairs and towels. • Room (10/10): Super clean, spacious, comfy bed. Décor is a bit 90’s, but everything works perfectly and spacious. Separate toilet room, big shower with lots of hot water, stocked mini-bar, and plenty of bottled water. All included. No hidden fees. • Taxi to Town (10/10): Easy and cheap—150 pesos each way, flat rate. Hotel calls it for you. From town, ADO buses go to other cities and the airport. • Food (9/10): Buffets have variety, and à la carte spots didn’t require reservations (huge plus!). One member of our group is Vegetarian and options were easy to find. Steakhouse was the only tricky bit for her, but staff went above and beyond to accommodate. Prime rib was excellent; Italian and Asian were okay—stick to local specialties for best quality. • Drinks: Premixed slushies are meh; ask for sparkling wine, G&Ts, or Mezcalitos for better results. • Service (15/10): Absolute highlight. Staff are friendly, attentive, and genuinely caring. Tips are appreciated but never expected. Huge thanks to everyone—housekeeping, bar, waiters, front desk, drivers, entertainment, pool crew, maintenance, porters. * Day pass (10/10): If a friend lives nearby and wants to join you for the day they can buy a pass for USD 50. It’s good from 8am-10pm and gives them access to buffets, drinks, pools, beach, towels and entertainment. They just can’t go to the speciality restaurants The Bad: • Thin walls—noise can be annoying. • Got sick from food on the last day, which made the flight home rough. Always travel with Imodium!

Definitely Going Back
I’m going to sum this up in a few phrases. Great food! Excellent service! Amazing beach! Highlighted by our servers/bartenders: Leo, Eduardo, and Carlos. Would highly recommend and we will be going back!!
