Best servers
This hotel had the best pool/beach servers we have had in a long time. They came around to ask if we needed a drink or a refill, they were very friendly and paid attention to all of the guests. There was one man, German that as extremely courteous, very friendly and came around often to make sure we were taken care of.
My husband and I spent our honeymoon here, and we loved it! The pools were great, the beaches were clean and sprawling, and the service was wonderful. The food was AWESOME. We miss it now that we're back! Ha. We had a garden terrace junior suite; they upgrade you if you're on your honeymoon -I thought that the room comfort was good, but the bed was on the firmer side and a little less comfortable for myself (my husband had no complaints.) Otherwise we both had no true complaints! Lovely trip and just as relaxing and restoring as we had hoped.
Although Riu Palace was in the midst of changes; their service was stellar - I was happy to see there was no false advertisement- as far as how beautiful the pool/beaches and staff were. Food was Great and did I mention how amazing the staff was ...
Riu Palace Riviera Maya is getting ready for remodeling. We stayed at the Riu Palace in Punta Cana last fall after remodeling, they did a great job. The staff was very friendly and not a lot of people at this resort for some reason. The water was very full of see weed and made the water look brownish red and did not want to get in the water. The large bar pool water was very warm and was kind of nasty( trash and hair balls floating). Overall, a nice resort to stay at after remodeling. Within walking distance of 5th Avenue(shopping district) about 15-20 minute walk, not bad. Very safe to walk to and from. Resort is in secure gated compound with private homes within compound. Had problems with one excursion and one pick-up to go to airport but will take up problems with Cheap Caribbean.

In order to find the best rates for your travel dates you will want to use the yellow Create Your Own Vacation box on the left side of the resort's page on our site. Simply plug in your information - dates, departure city, number of rooms, amount of people and ages - and you'll be taken to a page with the cheapest flights available for the dates you selected as well as providing a 5 day window in case your dates are flexible.

Rates vary quite a bit. If I were you, I'd compare on many websites and teh palace directly. One woman I met there had paid 400 US per night, I paid - I've forgotten exactly how much - but quite a bit less than that.

We paid about $1600 per person for two to a room - 8 days 7 nights

How far away is the sister RIU from the RIU at Riviera Maya?11 answers
7 years, 94 months ago
happigurl1
Along with the Riu Palace Riviera Maya, there are multiple other Riu's located in the Riviera Maya area. The Riu Palace Mexico, the Riu Playacar, and the Riu Yucatan are all in the Riviera Maya area. There are also multiple Riu properties a short distance away in Cancun as well.
KristinCC
Hi Happigurl1,
They ones on the beach are walking distance. From the Palace Rivera Maya, to the yucatan, is 10 mins up the beach, the Palace Mexico is right next to the yucatan. The Riu tequila is off the beach midway
RogerJ
There are, I think, three Riu's within walking distance from the Riviera Maya - We met a couple who went on a tour of all the Riu's from Cancun to the Riviera Maya - they had a great time and didn't have anything bad to say about any of the resorts!
Gingerale
a ten minute walk
krez
walking distance but we did not go because we loved the Riu Palace
Birthdaygirl2012
There are 4 other Rius within a 5-10 minute walk and a 2 minute cab drive. There are always cabs outside the resort to take you anywhere.
AlexisT
Very close. Depending on which other hotel you are talking about (I would say there are 4 or 5 more in Playacar area) they are walking distance. About 10-20 minute walks.
AmandaGemma
There are plenty of sister Riu's along the playa del carmen strip where the Palace is located. Each are just a safe, short walk from each other. Maybe a 5-10 minute walk to the furthest one.
ashers016
you can walk!
KristaLee
Which sister RIU? 3 resorts down the beach there are 3 or 4 RIUs in a row, then, of course there is the one in Cancun, and one in the Bahamas...

There are 5 other Riu properties within walking distance of Riu Palace Riviera Maya. You can go hang out there and eat breakfast and lunch but not dinner.

What exactly is included in the term 'All Inclusive''?11 answers
7 years, 93 months ago
Washington, DC
All inclusive means all your meals, drinks including alcoholic beverages, taxes, and gratuities are included
MeganCC
Price of he trip includes, all food 24 hours. All drinks 24 hours, gym.
RogerJ
All inclusive means at the palace anyway - you can choose from six restarants, and there is no additional fees. All alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks are included, you can order anything you like anytime. Basically, it means that once you are at the resort, you don't pay for anything else, unless you want to tip. And there is no pressure there to tip.
Kimi
Everything! Food, soft drinks, beer, wine, liquor. No tipping although I always tip! The service is always excellent and the workers appreciate your extra appreciation
Gingerale
all food and drinks are free
krez
First time to all-inclusive. Just got back last week. I loved it! Included Food, activities, alcoholic drinks.... I only took $120 cash with me on my trip and that is all I spent in the airports, tips and of course some souveniers
Birthdaygirl2012
All meals, snacks, beverages, alcohol, liquor, beverages stocked in your own room's mini fridge. You don't have to worry about some high-end liquors being used and then charging your account, like some other resorts do. If it's on the resort grounds, it's free! As for activities, all non-motorized water sports...kayaks, snorkeling, 1 free scuba class which teaches you the basics. You will use one tank in the pool to get use to it, and then another tank to go into the ocean and scuba dive!
ashers016
All inclusive includes all meals and drinks. I mean ALL. no limits and no problem. They have 5 places to eat. two are buffets wtih plenty of choices of fresh food and lovely items. others are more like trad restauants where they come and take your order of options on a menu. this all inclusive includes room service too.
we tipped and it was very much appreciated. we brought about 80 $1 bills for our 10 day stay. leave a couple in your room too each day. they dont make much and work very hard to please each guest!
KristaLee
Everything! All Food, drinks, room service, mini bar. There is nothing else you will pay for once you get to the resort unless you want to do optional excursions or waterfront activities like sailing, diving, snorkel trips, jetskis, etc.
Kruzer
Look on the website. EVERYTHING! but transfer from the airport to the hotel.
teke92545
all food and drinks for everyone in your party - as much of each that you want. Excursions are extra. free scuba lessons in the pool. Water sports such as parasailing, jet skis, etc are extra.

Is snorkling free, and if so, are you able to see lots of sea life?10 answers
6 years, 84 months ago
Gen
Snorkeling is included in the All-Inclusive package.
KellyCC
You can snorkel off the shore for free but I wouldn't think you would see much - the surf is pretty active. There are many protected areas that you can pay to get to and I hear it is really worth it. That might be a better way to go.
pacpatch
at rui, snorkel was a small fee, and lots to see
free at sugar bay st thomas and lots to see
Warmingchad
Snorkling here was free, but lots of motorized water sports nearby and not much sea life. Many trips available in hotel lobby to nearby locations or to Cozumel (an island not far from Riu).
DenverSisters
I think snorkeling is free. We didn't go this year, but we went snorkeling in the same reef last year through a different excursion. The reef is not impressive. There is very little sea life, and it is a shallow reef so you have to be careful not to kick it or scratch yourself on it. I have heard that Isla Mujeres has great snorkeling, but you would have to pay for an excursion.
Cargra
Everything is free, the water is crystal clear, but we did not see much sea life.
alla4600
No. Nothing is free when you get there they many tour for all the fun you want the tours are not cheap some are short and not to expensive all depends on the money you have.
1923
One can snorkel from the beach but not advised for high tide and undertow. On one day we were able to stand in the water but water not that clear. (other days of high seas and wind). We did book a snorkeling trip from the resort, it was okay at best, nothing like the Eastern Caribbean, (St. Thomas), lots of sand and un-colorful reefs. Swift tide at reefs so use caution!
vacationeersbeware
No, you need to pay extra. Plus you can see there few fishes and turtles only. And it's not on the resort, you need to book an excursion with local representatives
Dariapov
No the snorkeling is about $40 per hour and half hour away by boat. Not much snorkeling close by on the beach. Buy, it was very choppy seas when we went?!

Is the no reservation or reservation system better for parties of 6?5 answers
I am planning on trevelling the week of August 19th with 6 family membersDoes anybody have san opinion on the no reservation vs reservation system at restuarants. I am considreing the NOW or RIU resorts.
6 years, 82 months ago
Dallas
Some of our clients like the freedom of not having to make a dinner reservation the morning of; with a party of 6 you would have to be one of the first in line to guarantee seating. On the other hand, resorts which do not have a reservation policy, allow for more flexibility in dining (but we cannot guarantee that a party of 6 will not be asked to wait for the next table--same with parties of lesser numbers). It's certainly a client preference and we recommend asking the opinions of those you are traveling with.
LaurenCC
reservations would be better for 6, breakfast no problem just your dinners.
Warmingchad
Reservations are made between noon and 3pm in the lobby. You can make 2 reservations at a time, up to 3 days in advance. We didn't have problems with restaurants filling up, and there were large parties at every restaurant we ate at.
Cargra
If you want to reserve a table for 6 at a specific restaurant, then you will have to place a reservation between 12pm - 3 pm that day; if not, then you can go to the 'regular' restaurant which can easily accommodate groups of 10 plus guests without reservations (there were many large families/groups of friends) without a problem.
alla4600
Reservations are good for any number. I saw lots of weddings, usually you have to call the agency and they help you make booking for more than 6.they charge you according to number of people and give the rooms needed.

IS THERE A WAY TO GO ON A DAY TRIP FROM RUI PALACE TO COZUMEL10 answers
6 years, 80 months ago
NEAL
There is a ferry that runs from Playa Del Carmen to Cozumel and back. This is probably the most convenient way to take a day trip to Cozumel.
BILLCC
Neal,
absolutely yes. We were in Riu Palace last August, we took a Taxi to Playa Del Carmen (cost about $7.00 or 70 pesos). In Playa Del Carmen go to the port and buy tickets to Cozumel ($15.00 each, one -way). The trip is a pleasant 45 min. on a quite a large boat. The boat leaves approx. every 1-2 hrs.
P.S.You chose one of the best beaches in terms of number of palm trees and natural shade - enjoy it.
Good Luck,
Krzysztof
Krzysztof
You can take the Ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel. Its about a 5 minute taxi ride to the Ferry dock and about 45 minutes on the Ferry to get to the island.
Zrish
you can walk from the Riu to Playa Del Carmen and then take the ferry to Cozumel. If you can not walk the distance from the Riu you can get a cab and take the 10 minute or so ride to Playa and then take the ferry. We have done this at least 4-5 times.
Darby
You can go into Playa del Carmen (a 5 to 10 minute drive) and take the public ferry to Cozumel. The resort may offer another option too, but I'm not sure.
Cargra
Yes, there are ferry rides to Cozumel 20 minutes (via beach walk from the resort to Playa del Carmen).

There are ferry's from downtown Playa Del Carmen many times per day, which is within walking distance from the hotel or a very short taxi ride. I think the ferry's are $20 and a cab ride might be $7, but it is an easy walk. A mile at most. This is the closest all inclusive resort to downtown Playa that I have seen.

That's because they are different resorts. Most resorts do offer these services, however, for specific information regarding this resorts offered amenities, we do suggest contacting the resort directly as they would be best to assist you. The email address found directly on the resort's website to contact them is palace.rivieramaya@riu.com.
MariaCC
There is no beach food although we can take whatever with you from all
Places around there many places with the fresh cooked foods and fruit at all times.
Shade is under the palm trees and they have many beach chairs to sit never short around the pools there are chairs in the beach but not shade
1923
No beach huts but lots of palms. Only beach wait service is for drinks...but walk in cafeteria style food adjacent to beach.
beachgirl1962
The beach area is shaded well by palm trees that are planted in nice rows. Every day there is lunch brought out to the beach or you can go to the buffet that is right on the beach. Then in the afternoons the servers bring around pizza or ice cream for snacks if you want them. On Friday they have a beach party and have a more extensive lunch out on the beach which was awesome. They also did a little demonstration of how to make ceviche right by the pool and then served it up to everyone, it was the best!!
TheGoldbergs
Wait service on the beach is only for beverages. Chili's is the restaurant closest to the beach and pool and is buffet style. No huts, but plenty of palm tress and planty of sun. Finding shade or sun was never a problem and our group had those who liked one or the other and we were still able to find lounges near each other.
eranie957
Wait service - yes, but slow.
Only palm trees on beach. At poolside - broken umbrellas and only a few work properly. Palm trees also at poolside. Great pool, great beach, good drinks !

There is a place called Chili's in very close proximity to the beach & pool. It opens for breakfast from 10:30 to Noon and for lunch from Noon to 4-4:30. I suppose you could take your food out to the beach but there are birds that would likely bother you. Best to eat in the snack area. There are no huts to sit under, only the shade of the palm trees, or umbrellas around the pool. There is wait service on the beach to take your drink order.

They have beach food--there is a grill and a buffet on the beach, just past the pool area and it is self-service for that. There is beach service for drinks but it can be slow. The palm trees are the only shaded areas, but there are pretty big sections of palm trees and it is absolutely beautiful.

vacationeersbeware
Kids are allowed. We visited when school was in so we only saw a few young kids.
TooColdintheNE
I do not have kids of my own, yet there were definitely kids there. Not a ton of kids whatsoever, pretty few & far between, but definitely kids. There was a kid's club. Rather small and I am not sure how many offerings they had to that end, yet we did see kids at the resort.
JanetPlanet
This is NOT an adults only resort. The Riu Palace Riviera Maya has families with children staying at the resort. But, when we were at the resort for 7 days, not once were we bothered by any families' children. They also have a "kid's club" type area and a "babysitter" on the resort that assists with entertainment so parents can enjoy time to themselves. The resort staff is very good about entertaining the kids away from adults. It never felt as if this resort was full of kids, either. A majority of the people staying were couples with no kids.
SunnySkies
i don't know why they would say adults only, there were
many kids there

There is a club for kids. There is plenty to do for kids and family. There are more kids at the Riu Tequila, most likely because it is not beach front and the price is less. Which ever one you choose check the entertainment schedules for the Michael Jackson Show it is Awesome. Shows are different all of the Riu Resorts in Playacar. But you can attend all their shows.

Do they play music at the pool? If so, what kind?5 answers

Nikki
Most resorts do play music at the pool area. Please contact the resort directly for more information at www.riu.com.
LisaCC
Yes, they play music, but it's not overwhelming and it isn't the whole day. Usually it's a "dance" style music and there is some Spanish style music as well. I thought the music and the noise level was fine at the pool, but if you're older and don't care for music and entertainment, it might get a little annoying if the entertainment staff is trying to get people to "get a little rowdy". Overall, great experience.
SunnySkies
yes, everything from guns and roses to willie nelson

music is a mix of house, upbeat tempo or even some mexican salsa beats depending on what activities or games are being played at the pool. Sometimes no music at all.

No disco on site--there is one at another Riu up the road called Tequilia but we didn't make it there.
notsosunnyreview
There is live music and an area to dance, but not a disco per se; they market that Coco Bongo place where the younger 20's crowd goes to find hook ups. There are some raunchy activities that go down at the pool area during the day. I'm in late 40's with 16,18, and 20 year old kids, there is not much for them to do except hang out at the beach, drink, and go on some excursions. This is not the resort to go clubbing at. I find the Cancun resorts party more than the Playa del Carmen ones. Also depends on when you go- we typically go during Xmas time and it's really mellow (mostly people from the north getting a sun fix), but have gone during Spring Break Time and EVERY place is a bit out of control (ie- get a room! - not as bad as Fort Lauderdale, but the whole coast takes on a different personality)

how far is this hotel (Riu Palace Riviera Maya) from Cancun for nightlife and shopping?5 answers

We were not far from Playa. We went to dinner a few nights because we were close.
Gunnar
Far from Cancun. But Playa Del Carmen is closer. It is a nicer area and has just as nice nightlife. Maybe a 10 minute walk.
BBaggott
The hotel is about a 45 minute ride from Cancun.....but there is shopping and nightlife in Playa del Carmen. There is also some sort of nightclub tour of Playa del Carmen....looked interesting (we didn't do it - but looked like it would be fun...)
Maria2014
about 30-40 min from Cancun. there are plenty of bars and shopping near the hotel. $7or 70 peso cab fare each way to the locally famous "fifth ave". rec changing to peso on day one on fifth ave. best rate.

Cancun is 45 minutes north if you want to see that part of the country. There is lots of shopping along 5th avenue in Playa del Carmen which is only a few blocks away from RIU Riviera Maya.

don't think they have dance lessons. water activities inc kayaking, snorkeling, wind surfing(that's right) and wake boarding-free of charge. you have to pay for motorized water sports like jet skies and para-gliding (I think that's what is called)

can you drink the water8 answers
5 years, 63 months ago
Ed
We recommend drinking the bottled water the resort provides instead of the tap water in the rooms. All other water served at bars and restaurants is filtered.
CCGreg
You can drink the water served in the restaurants or the bottled water that is found in your hotel mini bar. The water at the sink the bathroom has a sign that says "Not Potable". We brushed our teeth with it anyway and didn't get sick.
ToesInSand1
I dont think there is any place in Mexico that you can say is 100% safe. As a precaution even in good hotels, bring some precautionary meds before you leave home such as Cipro, Immodium or other doctor prescribed cure.
zumazuma
i did at the resort for my whole trip with no problems
thanksbob
yes,,they also have bottled water
mybigkoi714
The water was all filtered in every area with food. I would not drink the water from any faucet even in the hotel. (Bottled water was everywhere and very easy to get; free for all-inclusive.
Ronin
yes on property
thegoose1
You can drink the water in the dining areas but not from the tap in your room. The hotel provides plenty of bottled water that is automatically replenished daily.
notsosunnyreview
not from the tap, and there is a non-potable sticker on the mirror. There are plenty of large bottles of water in the mini bar, and the water used to rinse vegetables and that is poured at the table is purified. Some of our family 3 of the 5 of us had the runs for a day, but not sure if it was from the water or food that we ate.

We recommend speaking to one of our seasoned Beach Experts at 1.800.915.2322 for detailed information about this resort. Our agents visit all of our properties and can tell you with first-hand experience all the minutiae about each resort, including walking distance from your room to the beach. Our offices are open from 5:00 AM to 3:00 AM EST daily for your convenience.
SamCC
It was about 200 yards from my bedroom to the beach. (pretty much the same for most rooms. Walking a normal pace...about 2 minutes.
Ronin
This is probably way too late, but it is literally no more than 200 yards from the very farthest point to the beach. Most rooms are within 100 yards.
mkbrown87
The beach is directly in front of the pool. I would say the walk from any room to the beach is no more than 5 minutes. Which includes the walk down the stairs if you're on an upper floor. The other partner Riu resorts would be a longer walk.
Janssens
The beach is literally steps away from the pool area--it's one of the best things about this resort.

How I can book each special restaurants?5 answers
I know some special restaurant in RIU. How early I can book for those restaurant? Which restaurant is the best?
4 years, 58 months ago
atlanta
Riu resorts will allow you to book specialty restaurants during the check in process. Early bookings are not an option at this time.
SalCC
You can only book up to 2 days ahead (tonight and tomorrow night). I can't tell you which one is the best but we prefered Don Manolo (buffet) as it had very good food, with many options for kids, very convenient. We tried the Mexican Agave but we weren't impressed.
PatRoX
Each morning, in the lobby, they have sign ups. Can reserve up to 2 days in advance. There are 2 seatings at each restaurant (1830 and 2045). Not a great system, but it works. I think it directs more people to just eat at the main buffet. I thought the Brazilian steakhouse was the best.
mkbrown87
The Brazilian Steakhouse was the best restaurant we experienced. You can make a reservation at one of the restaurants the morning of or for the next evening. You're not able to make reservations any further out than that. Reservations are taken in the lobby from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM - first come, first serve.
VacationNeededInMN
You must go to front living room area and a representative will be there. GO EARLY! They take reservations for 2 days out so make sure you go early in your trip to get a space.

I am looking to go to clubs or nightlife at night if we are interested. Is there anything around!
4 years, 56 months ago
Kathann
The resort is close is close to Playa Del Carmen, which is one of the local shopping districts and a popular tourist spot in Mexico. But, most of the clubs and the nightlife takes place in the heart of Cancun. If you are interested in a Riu property, Riu Palace Las Americas is right in the heart of the hotel zone near the clubs and popular night life in Cancun!
KristenCC
No real nightclubs in the resort area. You would have to go to town for that and I did not hear of any in La Playa del Carmen.
Riceball
If you talk to the locals they know of the areas for night life and clubs. Multiple young locals that I talked to invited myself to local clubs which you had to take taxis to cause they were couple miles away. They're no nightclubs on the actual hotel campus.
AngieM007
Yes they have Nightclub at the Riu Tequila, and also the Entertainment staff organizes evening trips to Cancun for CoCo Bongo nightclub and another club hopping trip.

TimCC
You can snorkel but you will only see clean blue water and sand. No fish!
KelMel
I wouldn't recommend snorkeling at the resort. The water is too rough / wavy for that.
notsosunnyreview
No there is not good snorkeling right at the beach, The beach area is white sand with no rocks, and is roped off. There are some fish that stray in the swimming area but not many. There is no reef for many fish to hang out at. You need to take a boat out to get to a decent snorkeling area. It is a good place to practice before going out, the surf is not rough and the visibility is very good. Best not to take boat out after 4, starts getting darker around 5:15 and takes about 25 min. to get to the really good snorkel spots.

Shuttle from Airport5 answers
Is there a shuttle at airport to bring us to the resort?
4 years, 50 months ago
Riu Palace
Round Trip airport transportation is offered for an additional amount. We work with a contracted company to help you get to the resort from the airport and back on your return trip. If you need help booking, please call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
TimCC
Yes, you can make the reservation for the shuttle and will receive the transfer information prior to leaving for the trip. You just need to print off the paperwork that is emailed to you. The price was very reasonable, about $49 per person for a round trip ride in an air conditioned van from the Cancun airport to the resort. The van holds about 8 people plus your luggage. The transfer van will meet you at the airport and the Amstar staff is easily found because they wear the same floral shirts, also holding signs as you walk out of the luggage pick up area and will direct you to where to get on the van. You may make a stop or two to drop off or pick up other passengers on the trip to resort or vice versa. Plenty of time was allowed to return to the airport to get checked in and go through security. It's not necessary to pay extra for the direct van to the resort or airport.
smitty1968
People bombard you in the airport, don't go with them. Make sure you find the shuttle people who will be outside the airport. We had Amstar who wore blu Hawaiian shirts and were very helpful.

do I need to get up early to reserve a beach chair? or are there plenty of places to lay

This will ultimately depend on hotel occupancy when you travel. In general it is recommended you rise early to reserve a chair since availability is limited and it is first come/first serve.
CCGreg
There are plenty of lounge chairs but not always right in the sun but you can easily move them down to the beach.
CANDERSON
We reserved ours, early in the morning. The pool area filled up very quick, so if you're a pool person, then I'd say yes. We are beach people and even though we did reserve, we didn't need to.

18 year olds can drink in Mexico, and that's what most of them will do. There is the ridiculous Coco Bongo that the kids go to, and I liken it to a Freshman in college's first frat party- nothing can be good at a meat market with teens drinking. It is an awkward place to hook up. I would do the backpacking/youth hostel trip to Europe (Netherlands and Prague-Czech Republic have best public transportation) way before taking my grads to Mexico. There's some excursions they can try- get their diving certification and do a dive trip near Cozumel, everything else is kind of overpriced and not very interesting.

How are the beaches? Seaweed?5 answers
Last year the beaches near Cancun had plenty of Seaweed. The staff at the other hotel worked hard to clear it, but it was still there and made swimming in the ocean difficult.
3 years, 42 months ago

Seaweed, unfortunately, is not something that can be predicted. It does fluctuate depending on tides, currents, weather, etc. This resort does their best to keep the water as clear as possible, however seaweed was an issue throughout the whole Caribbean last year and is unpreventable. But again, they do their best to keep everything clear so you may enjoy your trip as much as possible.

This is going to depend on the time you are looking to travel. Any resort that you may possibly choose will be more busy during the months of January to May as opposed to slower during the months of June-October. Unfortunately occupancy levels cannot be accurately predicted as they can vary.
JeannieCC
We just got back 03/16/17 and didn't find it crowded at all. Granted, first thing in the morning everyone seems to want to save pool side chairs, but we never had a problem finding one when we were interested in laying about. We seldom saw other people in our hallway and it wasn't until our last day did we hear someone staying in the room above us. Of course, I'm sure it's hit or miss on when they are busy, but we never went hungry, had to wait in line, or felt like it was crowded.

Unfortunately this resort does not have any restaurants on the beach, however, for an additional cost, they may be able to set up a romantic dinner on the beach for you. You would need to inquire with the resort directly for information on this.

On the beach itself, there are burgers, hot dogs, steak strips, and chips. There is a restaurant steps from the beach which has very good food- it is a buffet for lunch, and becomes Chili's steak restaurant in the evenings

The RUI Palace Riveria Maya is the nicest of the RUI resorts in Playacar. The rooms are clean, the food is great, the beach is beautiful and clean. The are no rocks but there can be seaweed. Which of course the resort can do nothing about. We enjoyed the nightly entertainment in the courtyard. And the town of Playa Del Carmen is a short 20 minute walk away. You can either walk the beach to Playa or the sidewalk.
85andsunny
Riu Palace Riviera Maya is closest to Playa del Carmen. It is one of the 2 Palace resorts in Playacar. This resort has not been updated to the modern style like the other Riu's, but it is clean with good food and nice beach. There was pretty much seaweed when we were there (May 7-11). They had guys getting rid of it on the beach, but it was still rolling in on the waves. They had music in early evening and shows later but not a real nightclub - you could go into town for that.

We stayed at Riu Riviera Maya, and visited the others in the area. I think Riviera Maya and Riu Mexico are the two best properties in Playacar! When we went in March, the beaches were "weedy" and snorkeling, etc had to be done half hour away at $40/ hour (snorkeling). But facilities at both were super clean and lots to do, see, eat, and drink!

We just got back from RIU Palace on 03/16 with my son age 14 and daughter age 17. No, there's not a lot for teens to do there. My son had fun playing in the ocean and building sand castles, but that only entertained him for so long. I swam with him a few times in the pool, but there's certainly no slide or diving board. My son really wanted to ride a jet ski, but he can only be a passenger, not a driver, so he opted out of that. We did side trips to keep them entertained, and my son loved the lunch buffet that was open all day. So, going to get something to eat seemed to keep him satisfied a lot of the time as well. Also, not sure if this is good or bad, but RIU does have FREE WiFi, so he wasn't TOTALLY bored.
Lurene202
My 17 year old went with us. Not a lot for teens to do at any of em besides beach, pool, or hanging out w the old folks! :).
He had fun though! There's lots to do for any age and they are away from their phone/ tablet, which is a good thing!

We had our 17 year old and 12 year old with us.. I don't think there is a teen room. If there was, we weren't told about it. If your son will join in, there was soccer on the beach, volleyball, etc.

Environmental Levy Fee
The Municipalidad of Solidaridad in the Rivera Maya is one of the most beautiful places in the Mexican Caribbean. Tourism has been instrumental in driving the economic and social development of the region. In an effort to continue to preserve, conserve and beautify the destination, the Municipality of Solidaridad has implemented a small environmental levy on visitors effective September 1, 2017. Hotels will collect 20 Mexican pesos per room per day on check out; the proceeds will be deposited in an environmental trust to fund local projects. The Municipalidad of Solidaridad thanks you for your understanding and support of this worthwhile endeavor. Thank you and enjoy your visit.
