My vacation at the Riu Palace

Our vacation was for nine days. I will start off by saying that the Riu Palace has great infrastructure and is a beautiful place but I will also say that it is more family oriented than what we were told when we booked, (ten of us in our late fifties and early sixties) and what we were looking for. First there were babies with diapers in the swim up bar pool. Don't get me wrong.... I love kids and my kids are now grown young adults but I would never have brought them with diapers in an adult pool with a lot of people who had been consuming massive quantities of alcohol. This was not just one child but many and many times throughout our vacation. Second, the night entertainment was almost nonexistent and what there was, was terrible. A few nights consisted of very young kids who were probably in the daycare there showing off their dance routine they learned that day. Why didn't they have comedians or bands that we could dance to? Nothing...Third, the place was so big and had so many people that the meals were almost like eating in a college cafeteria. The one part where the Riu Palace could have made it right for me and failed. The food was just so so...and it felt like they were slopping the hogs. Yes they did have specialty restaurants but with so many people it was very hard to get in them. The food in these specialty restaurants was mostly very good. For another $1000.00 dollars we could have gotten in another resort and not had to put up with screaming kids in restaurants and kids actually running on table tops while their parents watch and diapers in adult pools, and no entertainment and food that was not spectacular.

A little disappointed

This is our third time at The riu. Everything is updated and very clean. It has however lost some of its charm. The restaurant food quality was very poor a few times. My wife had a steak at the steakhouse that was inedible. She had to chew and chew and couldn’t eat it. Another night at the Italian restaurant she had the crepe lasagna and the top layer was so hard she couldn’t cut it with a knife. We don’t recall these poor food quality issues from previous visits.. the service is still good and they don’t skimp on the drinks. They were very accommodating when we requested a room change due to proximity to the live entertainment. We also noted that the entertainment are more kid friendly than adult, which is different from the past. We will probably be making a change for our next trip to the DR.

Worth it!

I have stayed at other less expensive RIUs and this was by far worth the extra money. Food is good, you’re able to eat at all of the restaurants without having a reservation, servers are very attentive to your needs, and the resort is big without feeling overwhelming. Pool parties are a lot of fun and a nice added bonus. Beach is gorgeous - you definitely want to stay here!
