Great Value

My husband and I chose this resort and we are happy that we did! this was the second time visiting Cancun, Mexico so we knew what we were looking for. The ocean view room was very spacious and had a stunning view. Plenty of pools, sitting area, bars available throughout the resort. As for the beach, the resort is located near a lot of rocks, so there is only one area that the beach is not too rocky. Not a huge deal, but something to think about when all guests are limited to a specific area to stay away from the rocks. The breakfast/lunch buffet had a full variety of foods to choose from. As for the restaurants, I can only review the Steak House and the Japanese Restaurant. The Steak House was OK, the Japanese, well I tried the sushi platter and suffered 24 hours of food poisoning. Lost a whole day after this, but I guess it is my fault for being so open to trying out all foods available... The night entertainment was alright, wish the singers would've stayed a little bit longer, it felt like bedtime was 11 pm every night. I know it's all inclusive, but the alcohol felt like it was watered down. The amount of alcohol I drank while at the resort would have had me hungover for days, but I just never got that "happy" feeling if you know what I mean. Besides that painful experience, I would recommend this resort to my friends. Great value for the price!

Poor quality service/food, disconnected management

Not sure how there can be so many stellar reviews, but I’ve visited many Caribbean beach resorts and this was one of the worst I’ve ever been to. From entering the building (which is quite beautiful) to check out, the experience was littered with poor customer service and bad food. Upon checking in, the front desk individual informs us that there is a surprise 126 peso fee for what I understand to be maintenance? Not sure about this but the woman didn’t do a good job of explaining it, and didn’t seem to care that we were caught by surprise. I brushed it off. She proceeds to tell us that although we booked a couples room with one king sized bed, they unfortunately overbooked and only had two doubles available. We are unhappy with this, but they offered us an ocean view for the next day when we get the actual king bed room. Fine. Surprise number 3: the room with two double beds isn’t even READY for us to enter (keep in mind it is 3:30pm, way past the check in time). Were they not expecting us 60 days ago when I booked the trip? Alright - we decide to head to the sports bar to eat. It is dimly lit and there is a mini buffet available. The hotdogs were extremely overcooked, the burgers were overcooked and dry, the nachos with cheese tasted like something out of a middle school cafeteria. Nasty but we stomached it after traveling for 9 hours. We finally get the room keys to the rooms we never wanted and it looks fine, similar to pictures. TV sucks, only Spanish language channels aside from a very select few. This bewilders me as it is mostly English speakers vacationing here, but I guess it’s not expected people will watch much TV. Sink - little to no hot water. Shower - button to switch from rain shower to shower head was faulty. Bed - cheap and not that comfortable but gets the job done. We go to dinner at the Italian restaurant on-site and order lamb chops, the cod fish, and squid with rice. Everything was either salty or not great tasting. We also ordered white wine and it was cheap $5 Chardonnay. The worst part of it was we ordered the lamb chops medium rare, and they came out absolutely scorched, bone dry extra well done. Disgusting. We leave and decide to go to the buffet restaurant. We call the front desk and ask if sleeveless shirts (tank tops) are fine - guy says Yes. We arrive at the restaurant for another surprise! No sleeveless shirts allowed, except at lunch and breakfast. Back upstairs to change. Ultimately, food was decent here. Back to our room and we see a note under our door saying to get the king bed room tmrw, keys must be returned and valuables stowed by 10:30am tmrw morning, otherwise the room change will be CANCELLED. This hotel literally threatened to not grant the room switch under these conditions, despite the fact that they completely screwed up with getting the right room in the first place. Unbelievable. Next morning for breakfast we go downstairs to return our room keys. We intended to go to the buffet restaurant and we triple check with the front desk if the sleeveless shirts we are wearing for breakfast is fine, per the manager the night before. You guessed it! No sleeveless shirts, says the front desk. At this point I’m livid. We take back our room keys, and change our shirts for what feels like the 10th time. We arrive at the buffet restaurant and of course everybody and their grandma is wearing a sleeveless shirt. Seeing this sent me over the edge. I am only on my second day of this trip and have found service, management, and the quality of food to be poor. Communication is disconnected. Not a single employee apologized for the hassles even after explaining the situation. I give this resort 2/5 stars and not 1/5 because the beach and pool are great. Will never come back here or recommend this to friends and family as I don’t want anyone to spend thousands of dollars to experience such a mismanaged experience.

Would absolutely recommend!

We just got home last night after spending 5 nights at the RIU Palace Peninsula, we were sad to have to leave! We had the absolute best time while staying there. When we checked in we inquired about a beachfront view and they were able to accommodate us. We had the most breath taking view on the 3rd floor overlooking the Ocean! The hotel is spotless and they are always cleaning..we never walked inside to not see someone sweeping or mopping the floors. Everyone we came in contact with who worked there was so cheerful and friendly! The bar tenders at the pool were our favorite. They were a lot of fun to joke around with and were steadily pouring us drinks/shots! When it came to the food we've honestly never had better (aside from the room service, very few options and most are flavorless) everything was so fresh and delicious! I typically am not a buffet fan, but couldn't get enough here. We ended up eating at the buffet every day aside from our first night when we did the room service. The food by the pools was excellent too! We did the couples massages on the dock which was so relaxing and the women were excellent. (the lady we booked with at the hotel though wasn't the friendliest and didn't explain the packages too well) The one thing you might want to think about before booking is that the restroom inside the room has no fan/vent. It's a private toilet however its fully enclosed with tile. Every sound is maximized and if you aren't comfortable with your husband, wife, partner you may be uncomfortable using the restroom (My husband and I were dying laughing) But we did talk about how if you aren't that comfortable or in a newly relationship that it would be totally embarrassing. When we can go back to Cancun we will without a doubt be booking again at the Riu Palace Peninsula! We can't get back quick enough.

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

The uber dazzling stretch of white sand, tropical flora and crystal clear aquamarine water.

Stress-ousting massages, steam baths and saunas at the delicious spa. It's a Melt-a-thon.

RiuLand - supervised activities for kids 4-12 while you get your drink & relaxation on.

The day trip to Isla Mujeres to see the sea turtles and all the electrically colorful fish.

The more-than-delish Mexican nosh spot and steakhouse. (Nom, nom, nom.)

Renting a moped or scooter and tooling around, taking in all the natural beauty.

Getting a bottle of tequila sent to your room for your birthday.

What We'd Change

While the nightly entertainment may not be for everyone, you are close enough to the heart of Cancun to find something that will strike your fancy.

Why You Should Go

It's just 13 miles away from the airport so that Beach Relief aka Your Vacay will start before you know it.

Mayan ruins are on site and near (Chichen Itza). For history buffs, it's a great dose of antiquity.

The resort is off-the-beaten path, but you can hope on a shuttle to the hot spots in Cancun.

There are oceans of water sports: kayaking, snorkeling, windsurfing and more.

When you're not in the luscious ocean, you can hit the gym or play beach volley ball.

Travelers report excellent service, that you'll feel like Beach Royalty. (It's a palace, after all.)

You can rent jet skis and for a fee, go scuba diving. Take the plunge.
