Relaxing Stay at a Great Price

My wife and I had a great time at the Riu Palace Bavaro in Punta Cana. It was very relaxing as the staff was eager to please. Our room was very spacious and we had a large balcony that overlooked the pool and the ocean. We had a chance to walk the beach and see the other Riu Hotels which were located next to each other along the beach. We had access to the other hotels' eating facilities. We ate a the steak house and Italian restaurant along with the main buffet restaurant. We had a problem with our door as the key card wouldn't work. A worker came and after an hour found that he couldn't easily fix it so they upgraded our room for no charge and had someone move all our belongings to the new room. When we have visited other hotels there's always an issue at the pool or beach where there's never enough lounges for everyone. That was not the case here as there were plenty of chairs and lounges for everyone. Maybe it was because we visited in January during the slow season but we never had to wait at the restaurants or anywhere at the hotel as they had ample staff. The booking process was very easy and we were able to customize our vacation to meet our needs. We would certainly use Cheap Caribbean again and highly recommend it.

Love this place!

We have stayed at this hotel several times. We have also stayed at it's sister hotel Rui Palace. For us - this is smaller than the palace, easier to find your way around and acclimate quickly. We have found the food to be very good here too. There are healthy choices available if thats important to you, The beaches are of course the best! beautiful white sand and there are always plenty of chairs available. I'm always surprised how everyone congregates in the center just past the bar when you can have so much space and privacy and quiet just a few steps to either the left or right on the beach. Oh well, to each their own! This is a family friendly place, though I've never seen too many kids here. The staff works very hard to include everyone and entertain. You can certainly be as busy or as quiet as you want. The shows at night are ok - the guests who participate in the friendly contests prior to the main show are ofter funnier and more enjoyable. The layout is such that you do see many of the same people/families over and over again. I enjoy that because you start to get to know them a bit and its nice to share a coffee or a drink in the lobby restaurant area together. One thing that has slipped a bit in the past five years is the maintenance. Some of the maids do an excellent job and others are so-so. Certainly not anything to keep me from coming back. The buildings feel like they could use a freshening up already after only being completed about 6 years ago. I will say this for the Dominican Republic - listening to stories from friends who have traveled to other tropical locations recently - I have never felt unsafe here. There are no security people on the beach with guns etc... There is security present, I've never seen them actually be needed.

Ok for the money

Spent 5 nights there in January. Room was generally comfortable and quiet. Often A/C was too cold at night and didn't respond adequately to adjustments. Sometimes shower water wasn't that hot; hit or miss. Housekeeping was excellent. Dining options fine. Red wine was undrinkable, not only by us, but as evidenced by the full glasses left on tables of other departing diners. Coffee phenomenal. Service very good; staff pretty happy and helpful throughout the resort. Plenty of lounge chairs at pool and beach. Wish there was drink service at the beach, though. Evening entertainment was inconsistent-- either fun or amateurish. Still a very good value vacation. We also did two excursions: Ziplining (recommend yes!) and a Spa Boat (no no no no!!). Got a massage at the resort spa, which was fine. The hot tub at the spa, however, was set at lethal temperature-- probably 106 degrees F.

Nice property and professional staff

Very nice property, well maintained with comfortable rooms. Beach was beautiful, not too crowded and very professional and courteous staff throughout the resort. Buffet was good with lots of food choices. We would definitely go back.

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

The sandsational Arena Gorda Beach - it's an escape-haven we never want to leave.

The vibrant villas that are surrounded by lush tropical gardens. Swoon.

The spa that wrings out all the real life gunk from your weary bod. It's heaven.

Those handy, dandy liquor dispensers in the room. Cocktails, anyone?

Kids club with a dedicated pool and activities that keep them entertained while you chill.

World-class golf is near - soaking in the sun while you play a round is the best. Ever.

Caribbean street - all the fun shops where you can feed your shopping addiction.

What We'd Change

Lounge chairs on Arena Gorda beach are hard to come by, so be sure to show up early to make sure you get a good spot near the water.

Why You Should Go

The airport is just 1.7 miles away. Can you hear those ice cubes in your cocktail clinking?

Soana Island excursion is a must - it's a secluded slice of paradise.

At night you can hit the shows and live music, dance at Pacha, or go the casino.

It's part of a bigger Riu complex where the party is always on. Get gussied up and go for it.

There's oceans of water sports - scuba, snorkeling, jet skis, windsurfing, kayaking. And more.

On land, there's tennis, jogging and a fitness center where you can burn off those vacay desserts.

You can ride horses at Caribbean Cachondeo, or hang with the friendly sharks at the Marinarium.

Water park with slides, tobogans, kids pool, sun terrace and snack bar.
