RIU...Never Again

I want to start off with positives and the best feature of the Riu is their staff, they were fantastic. Always extremely helpful and nice. At the pool, Raul was as good as one of the butlers we had at Sandals. He always had our drinks ready to go no matter were we sat that day. Second, the location of the Riu is great. The beach is awesome, and the hotel is right on the strip where there is a bunch of restaurants/bars/shopping. If you've been to Aruba before, then you know its a safe island, so leaving the hotel is no worry. Those are about the only two things I say were great. The food is god awful. I stayed at the Divi & Tamarijn before and the food there was good. Not great, but definitely good. The RIU is terrible. Breakfast was fine. Lunch and dinners were bad. Lunch was the same, every single day. Bad burgers with day old flaky bread. Same quesadillas, same salad bar, and soup. There was "baked" chicken which was good, but after day 3 I wanted something else. There was zero Caribbean/island flavors. Everything was plain and tasteless. Dinners are another disaster. There are 4 restaurants. The steak place is ok. We all got the steak or lobster which were good. The desserts were terrible. Taste like they sat in a fridge for weeks. Japanese was awful. The chicken satay was way over cooked and dry. The other options weren't that appealing. We looked at the Italian menu which again was bad. It had mushroom lasagna, Spaghetti and fish, Mushroom crusted lamb, Fillet of Cod...none of this sounded good so we never ate here. Note the menu did not change from Monday to Saturday. Then there is the Fusion restaurant which requires pants (which is a joke). Again the menu was not appealing filled with heavier winter like dishes Curry rack of lamb, Grilled duck breast, Mushroom ragout etc. From the food that we had been served earlier, I wouldn't take my chances or more complex dishes at the Fusion restaurant. Needless to say we were disappointed. We decided to eat out for dinner on 4/6 nights and the local restaurants were amazing. 24 Hour Room service is a JOKE. The options are the following: Caesar Salad with Chicken, Vegetarian Sandwich on Brown bread, Greek salad with Tuna, Nachos with Cheese , Smoked Salmon/Cream cheese on Bagel, Traditional Turkey Club. This is all day. Not the late night menu, but all day. I'm sorry but no burgers/fries/grilled chicken? That's a really sad room service menu imo. After drinking all day or at night I can really go for a Vegetarian brown bread sandwich or some Greek salad with Tuna...disgusting. Casino - awful again. Went in to play craps, the staff was sitting at card tables. We asked to play and they told us the craps is not opening tonight. We left and went next door to the Hilton which was amazing. Great casino. The lobby of the riu is generic and outdated. Lots of purple and zebra print which is weird for something that was updated in 2016. But whatever, not problem. The issue was the lobby is completely closed. No doors or windows are open that allow Aruba's awesome tradewinds to blow through. Instead its a cold cigarette smelling lobby 100% of the time. Pretty stupid design. Then in the main lobby are 2 small elevators for the entire building. Capacity said 13 people but its more like 8-9. We were on the 4th floor so anytime we called an elevator to get us, it was packed. It didn't have any real priority sensor. Just would go straight to the top floor called which could be 11 and work its way down. So during high traffic times like breakfast, we had to take the stairs. Again terrible design. 2 elevators was definitely not good design choice. Coffee bar in the lobby was good, but again not great. Iced coffee came to me in two forms. One day it was hot espresso with a few ice cubes. The next was like a Frappacinno. Taste like a coffee milkshake. There is a Sports bar which was always empty and has popcorn served in hot dog container. Its like those plastic containers cut in half. Drinks were not that great. As with most all inclusive resorts, they use the cheapest alcohol, but the Riu only had one beer choice, Balashi. All of the frozen drinks were really watered down. Daiquiri and Pina coladas were all coming from a frozen slushy machine. Not made with fresh fruit. I will say the Banana Mama was good and they used real banana. All the drinks at the pool came in a tiny plastic cup. You would finish your drink pretty fast so on one hand it never melted, but on another you would have to order another drink pretty quick. Last point is our room. We stayed on the 4th floor so the elevator situation was a problem. Our room had a really musky smell, like mildew or old wet cigarettes. After 5 minutes in the room you couldn't tell but every time I went back in the smell would hit you. I would never stay in this Riu or any other. We spent a few nights at Hilton next door and the Hyatt, and they are leaps and bounds better. Anyone can go into these resorts. They have a gorgeous open lobby where you can sit and have a great cocktail and enjoy the Aruba winds. They were truly amazing. They do not offer All Inclusive but I would much rather pay as I go then deal with the mediocre slop we were given. I really don't think we would spend that much more at one of these compared to an All Inclusive like the RIU.

RIU Palace Hotel

Highly suggest the RIU Palace Hotel. Make sure the selection is correct and don't confuse with the RIU Antilles which , unless that is situated next to the Palace Hotel, unless that is your preferred destination.

When we first arrived at the Riu, the first room had a terrible musty, mildew order, called the front desk they sent someone up to check this out. We happened to arrive while the maintenance men were there. They advised that the filter to the air conditioner was terribly dirty. Why is this allowed to happen, it is a high humidity area it should be checked on a regular scheduled time. Fortunately the hotel changed our room the next day. The night we stayed in this room I was awake all night waking up to the smell which caused me to get a migraine. I have stayed at Riu properties many times they do always correct the problem. Just don't understand why it is allowed to get to this point. We had already unpacked and had to repack everything. Otherwise I must say that Cheap Carribean is a great site to deal with and will continue to do so. Thank you , Melodie Hebert

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

Palm Beach is one of Caribbean's best beaches - the sands are so soft, the waves so gentle. It's paradise.

At the main pool, the hot spot is close to the swim-up bar. Lots of mixing and mingling and music.

The staff is awe-mazing, making sure everything is taken care of just for you. You want for nothing here.

Martini drinker? Pull up a seat at the lobby bar. The Espresso Martinis here are legendary.

The ocean waters couldn't be better for whatever water-adventure you're heart desires. Snorkel, anyone?

What We'd Change

Aruba's white sands and calm waters will be your favorite, but get there early to get the best seat.

Why You Should Go

You're in a prime location here and as one of the most tourist-friendly islands, you'll fall in love.

Champagne bubbly awaits you once you arrive. Cheers! Vacay starts now.

Rent a bicycle and you can tour the island at your own speed. Downtown is full of shopping & local flavors.

Picture-worthy sunsets. Grab a cocktail and perch yourself along the shores. It's worth it.

Daily bus service runs up and down the hotel strip. Bonus part: cost is around $2.50.

Some of the best snorkeling and diving in the area - coral-encrusted shipwrecked Antilla sits underwater.
