In comparison...

I traveled with a family group of ten, so I feel I am speaking for all of us. The resort was very clean and nice. We are generally cruisers (at least once a year) and I had been trying to get the family to try an all-inclusive resort for years. Before this trip, I had been on one AI resort vacation to Riviera Maya. In comparison to that resort, I must say that I was disappointed in the dining. While there were some varied options, in general everything was buffet-style...the exception being the steakhouse. Still, the steaks weren’t fantastic. Overall, I’d say dining was average. As far as the service, the swim-up bar was fantastic and Ruen made our day! We looked forward to seeing him every day at 10 am! Lol. The pool was always clean and a pool guy was constantly maintaining it. On our last day, however, one of the pools closed down and was drained for repairs? So that made things a little crowded in the larger pool. I guess these things happen occasionally so no big deal. Concerning the entertainment, you will not get the many options that you receive while cruising. However, the crew was FANTASTIC! Roley Poley was engaging as was Mr Fresh....Birdman and the entire crew will be remembered for some time! The steel band was great and so was the rock and roll show! The jerk chicken shack was decent tho there is a shack on the way to the resort that is authentic and the best I’ve ever had! I cannot remember the name , sorry. We splurged for a private transfer so we were able to stop at some places, which was nice! In comparison to cruising, I’d say that cruising presents a much better dining experience. However, it is so nice to be in one place for a few days instead of hopping on and off a boat constantly. I would definitely enjoy another AI resort vacation. In comparison to the other AI resort, I’d say the entertainment and friendliness of staff at RIU was far better. They just need to work on the dining experience. Overall, I would recommend.

Not impressed

Riu Negril was not a 4-star Hotel. I’d give it a 2-star rating. Why? My refrigerator and safe were broken, there was no coffee maker in the room and no room service. If you were anywhere in the lobby area, pool or one of the restaurants there was only one 5-stall restroom available. Male employees were aggressively flirtatious which made for some uncomfortable situations. I’ve stayed at all-inclusives before and this one was quite disappointing. To say the least, I was underwhelmed.

Good Resort But Rooms Need Updating

The overall resort, food and beach were better than expected. However, the rooms are in severe need of updating. Upon initial entry they smell like a damp basement, which never goes away. the ceiling fan only has one speed--ultra high--leading it to be turned off most of the time. The TVs are very old maybe 40 inch with poor quality color and contrast. the vent fan in the bathroom did not work--maybe it is just a hole and isn't intended to be a vent fan-but humidity builds up quickly. The shower head only had one position-straight down, which made it difficult to wash your whole body. We left one morning at 9 am and put the clean up room sign on the outside of door--came back at 3 and not cleaned--had to leave again so the housekeeper could clean the room around 3:30 pm. The "King" sized bed is in actuality 2 double beds pushed together, each having a separate set of sheets and blankets--so not very romantic unless you both want to crowd into one double bed. One final thought--this is the Caribbean--very humid--coming from the beach or water sports you're generally wet--people hang out their wet towels, bathing suits, underwear over the railing on the balcony--but nothing ever dries because it's so humid. Putting a few dryers in the utility rooms on each floor would make life more comfortable for the guests--just a thought.

Subpar Accommodations

Had to ask for soap, toilet paper and clean towels. Soap bar so small that it could potentially get lost if inserted in wrong spot. No shampoo or conditioner. Good thing we brought our own. Never received requested bathroom mat to keep floor dry after showering. Had one waiter disappear and go on a breakfast break while serving us. How do I know, he told us so before we left the dining room.

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

The singing bartender. See if you can find him. He'll mix you up a high-octane cocktail.

Great bang for your buck for all the activities, entertainment and food and drink you'll get.

The service at Riu is the best. They keep everything clean and orderly. You will be spoiled.

Nightly entertainment keeps the party going at night. And into the wee hours, if you must.

The sunsets off the shores of Negril are some of the best. Get your cameras charged and ready for snaps.

The infamous Rick's Cafe is not too far - the cliff divers are awe-mazing.

What We'd Change

The omelet bar is favorite in the morning. Get in line early to avoid a long wait.

Why You Should Go

Getting to Negril will take you about an hour & a half, but it's so worth it. Beachy drinks are waiting.

Grab some locally made souvenirs in town. Your friends/fam will kiss your ring upon receipt.

The restaurants at night will fill up, so make sure to make your reservations a couple of days in advance.

Beach shoes are always a good idea, especially when you want to beachcomb your way up the shores.

Pay a little extra to get upgraded Wi-Fi - it will work even on the beach. You'll def want it there.

The One Love Bus Tour will pick you up at the resort and show off all the local night spots in Negril.
