A great vacay

The resort is beautifully kept and clean the people are so friendly. We enjoyed the buffet and the al la cart meal very much. It is more. Towed on the weekends. We took a taxi to town 3 times for 5.00 each way which the resort handled for us. This was just a great time. Went on the excursion to Bunena Vista. Was so great. Our tour guide Hansel was just the best! For the price, you cannot go wrong!

Great Value!

My husband and I stayed at Occidental Tamarindo during our honeymoon in Costa Rica, and we had a wonderful time here! The food was better than expected for such an affordable resort. It was a small buffet for every meal, including rice and beans, veggies and various types of meats, but everything was really delicious, and seemed authentic. The salad, fruit and dessert bars were also well stocked with good stuff, not to mention the pool-side snack bar with junk food favorites (hot dogs, fried chicken, onion rings, etc.). All of the staff were accommodating and pleasant, and we even made some friends at the resort. The beach doesn't look like much during high tide but actually has some awesome spots for swimming when the tide is low and you can see a brilliant sunset every night from the resort beach. A couple other fun things we liked about this resort: there were several super friendly dogs that would play on the beach and approach us for pets! And a man came a couple of the days we were there with a few saddled horses, and charged us $20 for a nice ride on the beach - that was a main highlight of the trip! The only thing I would say needs improvement are some of the older rooms. Since we got such a good deal, we were placed in a far room that seemed pretty out-dated. The shower doors had huge gaps causing our bathroom floor to be constantly filled with water. And worst of all, our air conditioning broke on our third to last night there, and although we called the front desk multiple times, they were unable to fix it. We kept being told it was fixed and would go into our room to find it unbearably hot and humid. Finally, we asked to switch rooms for our last night to get some real sleep and they moved us to a closer room that we would have enjoyed much more from the start. That might be worth spending a bit extra on.

Three-and-a-half Stars

There are a number of positives about this resort, including wide, spacious, uncrowded beaches, friendly and attentive staff, comfortable beds, a huge, wide (the full length of our room) veranda, and above-average buffet offerings. Unfortunately, there are a few too many offsets, like the 75%-obstructed view (trees and bushes) from the 'ocean front' veranda, the misleading "walking distance to town" ... maybe, were I younger, I wouldn't mind a 20-mile hike along an unpaved, narrow road, but it didn't come close to being conveniently walkable. Then there's the lighting, actually the lack thereof, in the room; one single table lamp, that's it ... no light on the overhead fan, no ceiling or wall-mounted lights, nothing on the headboard or night tables. And, when I requested at least another lamp, the "I'll look into it" response produced ... nothing. And, perhaps because Tamarindo is a beach resort town (but I suspect not), everything was unexpectedly expensive. The exchange rate is something like 2,000 Colones equals 1 USD ... so, a 3,500 Colones beer (typical) is around $7 USD. Restaurants are the same, with typical entrees in the 12,000 to 20,000 C range ... so, the natural assumption that they're $12 to $20 USD is way off, and they're more like $24 to $40. Finally, the roving vendors are incessant, annoying, overly insistent, and Everywhere ... the beach, the sidewalks, they come into the restaurants while you're eating; really annoying. Of course, this isn't any fault of the resort, just something that comes with Tamarindo. So I'll think twice about returning to this part of Costa Rica

Nice trip

The Hotel overall was nice. Only two options for dining and one small pool area which is disappointing. The food wasn't the greatest but good enough to have a decent meal. Simple rooms however not enough ventilation in the bathroom causing walls and floors to get wet. Close to shops and restaurants which is great.
