Another great vacation at the Occidental at Xcaret

Another wonderful stay in the Royal Level. I return almost every year to relax and recharge, and the Royal Level team continues to impress. From check‑in to the restaurant to the service at the pool, everyone is consistently kind and welcoming — some even remember us from previous visits, which always feels so special. Huge shoutouts to Mireya, Samuel, Alberto, and Daniel for being especially thoughtful and kind throughout our stay. The restaurant was offering a French‑inspired dinner menu this time, and it was really good. My favorite was the chateaubriand, while my friend absolutely loved the sea bass. In the spirit of balance, as other reviewers have mentioned, the resort does show some signs of age. That said, I still prefer it over some of the newer Riviera Maya resorts I’ve tried, which can feel a bit cold and sterile by comparison. The only thing I’d really like to see updated are the beach loungers — several were definitely ready for repair or replacement. Overall, another great experience, and I’m already looking forward to my next visit.

    Great nature and experience

We stayed at the hotel for 6 nights. We had a royal level room/suite and we were very happy with all the bonuses the royal level gives you. The french restaurant was a god sent, since we did a 14-day trip through Mexico before our stay here, and we got a nasty stomach bug on the way. All the great food served here was just a pleasure and did wonders for me. We especially enjoyed the wonderful nature in and around the resort and all the animals that surounded us. There were monkeys on our balcony and deers below it. The nice foot paths through the forrest were especially nice just to relax and enjoy. If you are staying for a few days, get the Xcaret unlimited pass. It was great just going to the park, enjoying all the shows and sights it offers, and then go back to the resort, have something to eat and drink and after that head back to the park for some more entertainment. I would also really like to mention all the great staff, that made our stay special. The bellman Carlos Ivitz, that always made us smile and drove us around the property, Diego that drove us to the check-in and later showed us around the resort and all the others that made everyday here into something special. Thank you!

Great for families, not recommended for adults

Pros: They got the nature part right. Hotel grounds, vegetation, and animals are spectacular and well cared for. They make it a point to maintain a balance for people and animals to coexist. The animals are wild and it's NOT a petting zoo. Our room and all hotel buildings were super clean while a little dated. The Royal section is worth the upgrade with 2 pools and a private restaurant with great food and an unbelievable view that literally saved our vacation. The Royal section is intended to be quiet (more on that in the cons), removed from other areas and has more of an adult vibe. All staff were fantastic everywhere we went. The lobby section and hotel/stores area are beautiful to wander through. Drinks were very good across the whole property. Cons: The bathroom in our room had no solid doors, they all have slats, so sound really travels - lol. The manmade lagoon is the only beach but feels more like a big pool. There's limited space so it's crowded, with people squeezing in where they can to be near the water. The adults only area, while beautiful, has even less space and very little shade from the blazing sun. You're basically roasting on rocks like a lizard but the bathing area is one-of-a-kind. HOWEVER - there were often kids and families there looking at the view and taking pictures when we went, so not really adults-only. The food in the restaurants and buffets, with the exception of the private Royal restaurant, was not good. Buffets are not my thing for hygienic reasons, but the "formal" restaurants were meh to bad. The Mexican food was bland. The Italian food was frozen cafeteria grade at best. The Steakhouse ribs required a chainsaw to cut while my husband's steak was like rubber. House wines were terrible. Complaint: THEY NEED BOUNCERS AT THE ROYAL. Guests pay extra to be in the exclusive area and while there are signs at every entrance explaining that you can only enter if you are a Royal guest, without fail, every single day, some idiots would wander in and make themselves at home or tour around while we ate or were by the pool. One night at dinner, when you had several couples and families in nice evening clothes on the restaurant's beautiful patio, a large family comes stomping in fresh off the beach, kids yelling and running around like they're in their backyard, with the mother lumbering into the restaurant with a floaty under her armpit spewing sand everywhere demanding that she and her brood be served dinner. She loudly said they would pay extra. Another day a large group of about 10 people wandered in like they were on a tour, pointing and taking pictures while we were by the pool. Another time, two women came in and made themselves comfortable on the daybeds in the area perched over the water and spent the day, without having to pay the extras that the rest of us had. OVERALL: It's an affordable hotel for the area, clean and beautiful, and geared towards families with amazing natural encounters. If food doesn't matter to you and you're ok with crowds, this one is for you. I don't recommend it if you're just a couple or an adult group as there are really no adult-only areas, no matter what they advertise. If you want decent food, stay at the Royal, but be prepared for stupid people to take away from your experience because the hotel does not manage them.
