Most recent stay
I’ve stayed at Occidental Xcaret many times because of its great quality and value, and I’ve recommended it to friends who have visited based on my suggestion. Unfortunately, this most recent stay was very disappointing. The main issue stemmed from a new check-in process that has moved from the lobby to individual building blocks. The staff at the building level appeared poorly trained or uncoordinated, which caused significant problems. We arrived as a couple and were assigned a room with two beds. When we asked for a king bed, we were told the only option was a ground-floor room facing a fence and golf cart road, with the option to change the next day. The next morning, I spent three hours (8–11 a.m.) going back and forth between concierges because information was not passed between staff. I was repeatedly told to come back later, only to be told there were no rooms available—until I insisted on checking with the lobby, where two rooms were suddenly found. We agreed to move rooms and were without a room or luggage from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. At 3 p.m., our new room was ready, but our luggage was missing. Despite repeated assurances that it would arrive in “10–15 minutes,” our bags did not arrive until 4:30 p.m., effectively ruining one full day of our three-day vacation. There were also smaller issues, such as a non-working safe in the first room and low water pressure with poor temperature control in the second. While we did not book an upscale room, this level of service is not acceptable for a hotel that presents itself as 5-star. This experience makes me hesitant to recommend this hotel again or return myself, which is unfortunate given how often I’ve stayed here in the past.

A poor all-inclusive experience
This was the most expensive all-inclusive resort I've ever stayed at but it was nowhere near the best I've experienced. The service was mostly impersonal, the buffet food was not kept warm enough and there was a lack of variation, the WiFi in the room was mid, the evening entertainment was very poor, the only good coffee on site was at a coffee bar that you have to pay for in addition to the all-inclusive, all soft drinks had artificial sweeteners in them, the location is excellent for going into Xcaret Park but it's terrible for transport anywhere else as only taxis are available and you're hit with an incredibly overcharged tourist tax to use those (the lobby bellhops will quote you 500 mxn for a taxi to Playa del Carmen, a rides hare app will do it for 200/250), the development is very clean and well kept with beautiful landscaping and vegetation. I would not return, I've experienced far better in Europe.
