For those longing for dreamy days lounging in a laid-back beach paradise, then head to Cozumel's sandy shores, known for long, walkable stretches and eclectic corals beneath the waters. It's true what you've heard - this is a diver's dream. But if snorkeling is more your style, then you'll have plenty of colorful creatures to see. You might pack your underwater camera and capture all the snaps you can.

Overall great vacation.
This was our second time at this resort this year. Truly enjoyed our stay.
The resort is smaller, grounds are beautiful and service is excellent. The rooms are large and comfortable. Mini fridge is stocked daily with water and drinks.
Bartenders a great and drinks are not watered down.
Pools are well maintained, the beach is fantastic.and the area is ideal for snorkeling or just sitting back and relaxing. Very few vendors on the beach and they are very respectful once you let the know that you are not interested.
The food was good and there is always something for everyone at the buffet. Since this was our second time we only booked one specialty restaurant which was good .
What i would change is a bit more entertainment in the evening maybe live music to keep everyone entertained after dinner. A beach bonfire party would be ideal for evening entertainment.
There is a disco on the premises but it's mostly empty since the crowds are older they tend to gather at the lobby bar after dinner.
There are lots of positives about this hotel - the grounds are beautiful, the beach is lovely, there is a dock right there for fishing and diving trips. The rooms are big and the beds are comfortable. You can snorkel right off the beach.
Now there are also lots of quirky bits which may or may not bother you :
1) big groups will have some problems. We were a group of ten and they would not seat all of us together for the reservation restaurants. We had to do two groups of five. Then one night they said they would put us together but then we had to all eat from a set menu. When we did eat at the Reservation restaurants the times are extremely limited and there were not enough menus. However the food was extremely good. You can only eat at these restaurants a few times.
2) they say you can snorkel every day for an hour but you can’t. The one time we tried all the equipment was given away to another hotel. When we went to use the next day they only had masks and no fins. Best to bring your own. Similarly they don’t have enough paddles for the sea kayaks.
It’s a small resort so they run out of stuff like red wine, or towels or glasses. But the smallness is also what’s nice about it.
I would love them to enforce some eco rules around sun block. The snorkeling off the beach is great but won’t be there in a few years if everyone keeps going in with all their sunblock on.
My boyfriend and I booked this resort for my birthday vacation. Overall, it was great. They even delivered birthday cake to my room! The resort was kept very clean as well as our room. The Buffett for dinner was repetitive at times but that was okay because the food was good and we are not picky. The restaurants were very good and reservations were easy to get. The only thing I had a problem with was bar service. The alcohol was definitely watered down and the resorts policy states that they do not serve any alcohol before noon so if you want to have a drink before noon I suggest having some alcohol in your room. The mini fridge was stocked everyday with 2 beers , sodas and plenty of water. The drinks in the mini fridge were never as cold as they should be. The staff are super friendly! I suggest bringing insect repellent because the mosquitos were pretty bad. The entertainment by the pool wasn’t great but there is a lot of other things that you can do. The beach and the ocean more than make up for it. I’d recommend this place to my friends and family and I would definitely go back.

What's the best hotel for children to explore the grounds for wildlife like lizards?7 answers
In addition to a nice beach, our kids would like to have lush vegetation and areas on site where they can explore for wildlife on the ground and in the trees.

Unfortunately, we do not have any information on file regarding resorts' wildlife. Please feel free to call and speak with one of our experienced Beach Experts for further assistance with your travel needs. Our office is open daily from 5am - midnight EST.

This was an awesome resort for lizard watching! My husband and I looked out of our window every morning to find them hiding in the trees! We also found them "posing for photo ops" all over the resort grounds during the day.

Occidental Grand Cozumel has it all for kids, lizards everywhere, great beach, lush grounds........you won't regret this resort if you have kids.
OCGqueen
Absolutely the Occidental Grand Cozumel. Animals abound on land and in the water. You can't walk to the restaurants or the beach without seeing some kind of critter.
We saw lizards, iguanas, small birds, a cat and kittens, javelinas, turtles, an alligator, frogs, large sand crabs and hermit crabs. In the water we saw various tropical fish, an eagle ray, a lobster, and a barracuda. Our kids loved it!
Ava86
Occidental Grand has a lot of wildlife on the grounds. Many large iguanas! We met turtles wandering around and a couple of tarantulas. There were also geckos near the buildings. Down by the mangroves you can view a caiman from the foot bridge and lots of turtles and ducks. We saw a lot of birds including wild parrots and one day we spotted a javelina grazing below our balcony!
DiverDiva
we saw some lizzards but you can't walk in the mangrove just on the pathways.

Is there good beach snorkeling?9 answers
We want to know how far this resort is from Palancar reef. Can we snorkel right from the beach and see enough fish and other sea life.
6 years, 84 months ago
Squeeky
The Occidental Grand Cozumel is located on Playa San Francisco (it is actually along a private section of Cozumel's famed beach). There is snorkeling at the resort--the San Francisco Wall is located just off its shore; however, that may be best explored with diving equipment. If the snorkeling at the resort is not up to your standards, you are located just North of the Palancar Reef.
LaurenCC
It is a short boat ride to good snorkeling sections of the reef from the hotel. The hotel has a nice sandy beach that you can also snorkel from and see plenty of fish.
Luce
Depends on the wind/weather. You are very close to the reef but the week we were there (2nd week of Feb) the winds were out of the south and it kept the water pretty stirred up close to shore. The diving was still great at most sites but snorkeling was terrible due to poor visibility and choppy water.
DiverDiva
no you can't snorkel right from the beach it is too cloudy
mamma
There is limited snorkeling just off the beach, but you can not get to the reef directly from the beach. There are many snorkeling trips that will pick you up and bring you back to the hotel pier. you can sign up for these after you arrive. There is always room.
DiveJim
Yes you will see fish :) right from the beach and palancar reef is about 20 minutes from the resort and is beautifully you will enjoy.
Oreal
We enjoyed to snorkeling from the beach. You could not snorkel out so far as a reef, but there were lots of fish and additional sea life at times.
The dive shop offered snorkeling tours for $40 a person for 2-3 hours with a couple of location stops that might be appealing.
Dudley
You can snorkel from the beach only within the roped off area, many boats in and out of the dock. There was nothing to see but a few fish now and then.
Joylon
Palancar reef is very close, but you have to take a boat (money for excursion). Snorkeling on the resort's beach is fair

Round-trip airport transfers are available. If you have not yet booked your reservation, you may add them during the booking process after you select your room type on the website. Transfers can be purchased ahead of time, but we have always paid for ours at the airport. There are lines of vans and the amount is calcualated and posted right there.
DiveJim
We purchased the transfer from CC.com. It worked out well for us.
Dudley
Walk out the door to the right, follow the exit road and take a taxi on the other side of the roundabout.
Diver713
Use trip advisor and follow those instructions. Transfers thru this site were $90.00 per person. We walked out and got a cab for $20.00 to the hotel. Same when we left. Th hotel called and it was like $18.00 for two people.
lauraloca
Get a cab as the tranfers are over priced. About 10-15 for a cab to the hotel

From our website::
BEACH
The Occidental Grand Cozumel is set in a secluded nature preserve on the southern side of Cozumel on a private section of Cozumel's finest beach, Playa San Francisco. Chaise lounges and beach towel services are included.
Whether or not you would need footwear would be a personal preference. You can contact the resort directly by going to their website at
https://www.occidentalhotels.com/resort/occidental-grand-cozumel
and using the "contact us" link at the top to find out exactly what you are looking for. Thank you.
RobinCC
Swimming is right off the beach. It is only 4- 5 feet deep for 3 or 4 yards so lots of people just stand or float off of the shoreline with their drinks in hand, and hats and sunglasses on. :)
We did not require water footwear, there is an area of a foot or so were the coral washes up on the sand and it is slightly uncomfortable to walk through but not awful by any stretch. The water is sandy bottomed.
76876
yes the beach is right off the pool. walk right up to the pool from the beach, rinse your feet and hop on in
honeymooner520
Yes. Swimming is good right on the beach with soft sandy beach and no shoes required.
Vice
The beach is a little rougher than Cancun. Since there are many reefs there are a lot of shells and such. Pretty sandy but there is weed/algae a ways out. i would recommend water shoes.
lauraloca
There is swimming right off the beach, and a pool beachside. I didn't need footwear, but you might want to bring fins and a snorkel. There are fish out there.
knaas1228
You will need water shoes, many shells and rocks
Joylon
You can walk directly in the water. This beach and the Allegro have the best beaches I have seen on Cozumel

The Occidental Grand Cozumel is about 15 minutes from the closest town, cabs are usually readily available for your convenience.

The town and night life are like 5 minutes down the street. From the airport you pass this going to the resort. Also If you keep going, away from town, there are 2 great restaurants: Playa Bonita ( best cerviche!!!) and Coconuts! I highly recommend both

Just south of the resort (short walk on the beach) is Albertos. Live music and great food and drink. No need to go to town for a wild time. There is also a disco with a great dj on the property. While we were at the resort it was rocking. All depends on the crowd.

There is a dive shop on the property. DivePro Mexico. 10% discount if you book early. We didn't love them. Watch them. They tried to cheat us on some stuff. Make sure you have batteries for your flashlight, and if you want to do a night dive, bring your own glow sticks for your tank. $6 rental for a tank blinker. The divemasters were great, esp. Benjamin. The reefs are close. No shore diving.
knaas1228
Literally right next door, as in walk out of the restaurant and look to your left, there it is. They were great to work with.
if you are a first time diver: count on showing up at 8 for a lesson in the "classroom" and a trial lesson in the pool to learn the equipment then you're free until 1, the boat ride out is about 30 minutes? then 2 45 minutes dives and you're done by 4/430. count on it taking up most of the day but WELL WORTH IT. saw so much aquatic life, it was truly amazing.
MadGame
Yes, it's on property. They take you for three reefs. The best one we found was just 2 min away from the property.

Genuine concern after reading some of the reviews3 answers
I am a little uncomfortable after reading the reviews. Can anyone confirm:
1. Are there time limits on water activities like snorkeling and kayaking?
2. Is there a timeshare sales-pitch that i will be pressured into attending?
3. Is it difficult to get reservations at one of the sit down restaurants?
4. Do you need to wait a long time to get your beverages?
I am thinking of booking the last week of May, 2017 but am really scared after some of the reviews.
Thanks!
2 years, 32 months ago
PA USA
1: Limits on activities depend on the resort and occupancy levels, please contact them directly for information for your dates of travel.
2: Resorts often offer timeshare presentations as the sale of these is generally what makes it easy to keep their rates so low. You are not required to attend, however.
3: Reservation availability is entirely dependent on dates of travel, occupancy levels, etc so this can vary. You can discuss reservations at the time of check-in to try to get the best times for you.
4: Wait time on beverages again also depends upon occupancy levels, busyness, etc. Unfortunately there's no way to accurately predict this as it can vary.
JeannieCC
1. Snorkeling and Kayaking have a one hour time limit each day.
2. We encountered a sales pitch at the airport that we got deceived into - never again. We were approached once at the beginning of our stay at Occidental to get a "Welcome gift" and declined and they never asked again.
3. You need to set up your reservations each day beginning at 8:30. We never had a problem getting a reservation and generally tried around 9:00 each day.
4. The pool bar does have the longest lines and the drinks were not great but we did not have a big problem with the wait.
The resort is a great place and has a very relaxed atmosphere. We had read a few bad reviews but were pleasantly surprised when we arrived!
SunLovin4
1. An hour is free on snorkeling gear, I paid $14 to have it for half a day.
2. You can avoid the sales pitch, they aren't too pushy.
3. Reservations were easy to get for us. You just talk to three front desk in the morning. We went in off season though, may be harder if it's more crowded.
4. Beverages were fast and good!
