Disappointed

The resort was definitely clean and the staff was very polite. However, while registering at front desk we were notified that there was an additional fee to be charged for maintenance of the seaweed on the beach. After much discussion we refused to pay it stating we were not made aware of the additional fee ahead of time and were “all-inclusive” with Cheap Caribbean. After speaking with our Amstar representative later in the day, we had to sign a disclaimer saying why were not agreeing to this additional charge, etc. The Amstar representative was very helpful(Juan Pablo). The room we were given was the worst room we have ever had at any resort. Small, old, and on the street. Yet it was always clean and the mini frig was well stocked. Tipping our maid daily probably helped as it wasn’t her fault that the room was undesirable. Due to the controversy over the unwanted fees, we felt that asking for a room change was not going to be allowed. We visit Mexico several times a year and love to explore new resorts. The food and beach at this resort was very disappointing. Even the specialty restaurants were not up to par. We had a relaxing time despite the shortcomings because it was important to us to have a good vacation.

Wouldn't Recommend

I was looking for a calm, relaxing place to vacation and was very disappointed with Occidental Costa. I've stayed at Barcelo resorts in the past and been very happy with them. Here, however, the value of the resort was good, but it came at the expense of the overall vacation. My biggest complaint would be the room. The space itself was fine, as were the beds and amenities (mini bar, towels, etc). We upgraded to the Ocean View Terrace - the others only have a small Juliet balcony with no seating. The upgrade was worth it for the view and the seating outside (hammock and chairs/table). The room was anything but quiet. It was so loud at night that I had to wear ear plugs and still couldn't get to sleep because of the noise from the hallway/pool area and the bar. If you're looking to stay up late partying in Cancun then this is probably fine, but if you want to get sleep and/or relax in your room then I'd definitely recommend you stay somewhere else. The doors and windows were about the least soundproof things I've ever seen. It only got quiet after midnight. The water pressure in the shower was awful - it barely drizzled out of the fixture, whereas the pressure in the sink was so powerful it would spray everywhere when you turned it on past the absolute minimum. As for the "all-inclusive" things, upon arrival and check-in we were unable to get a dinner reservation for that night (we arrived at noon) - we ended up going to dinner at a restaurant called Harry's (highly recommend them). We were told that dinner reservations were required for anything but the buffet and they needed to be made each day and that they started taking them at 7am. Knowing the buffet is your breakfast and lunch option, you really want to be able to eat somewhere else for dinner, but that proved very difficult. The next day we had planned a day-trip to Isla Mujeres, so we were up early and able to get a reservation for that night. The following day, however, we were again unable to get a reservation (at 10:00am after breakfast). Bottom line, if you want a reservation at this resort you need to be in line at 7:00am each day and hope they're not already booked. And by the way, booked doesn't mean they're full - when we did eat at the non-buffet options the restaurants were typically about 1/4 full, but not taking walk-ins (we were able to walk-in once, but it felt like they were definitely not supposed to do that). The food at the restaurants was good, though. As was the service. The buffet was well staffed and the waiters at the restaurants were all very nice and friendly. The three options had more than enough menu items to choose from. The bars weren't staffed as well. The Lobby Bar usually only had 1 bartender and it would take 5-20 minutes to get a drink at night. During the day it wasn't as bad, because they did have waitstaff for the pool area. Lastly, the resort does not include free Wi-Fi, which we knew going into it, but was nevertheless frustrating. The package deal they offered was for either 5 days (1 device) or 7 days (2 devices). We paid extra for the 2 devices (even though we were only there for 4 nights). We were told we should test it in the room before purchasing it, but once we knew it worked to go ahead. We did so, but could only get 1 device to work. We talked to the front desk and were told that because we paid for it through PayPal (which was how it was presented to be paid for - there was no bill to your room option) it didn't qualify for their 2 device promotion. They made little attempt to fix it and only offered us a 24 complimentary Wi-Fi password for the 2nd device. They didn't follow up even though they took down our information. It was more difficult to deal with the issues than it was to just try to roll with them, but as the little things piled up it became a less and less enjoyable stay. The vacation was a good time, but the resort was disappointing and somewhere I would never stay again or recommend to anyone other than for it's value. If you're looking for a relaxing/quiet vacation, I would stay somewhere else.

Awesome bargain

We just got back from our first trip to Cancun and I have to say this resort was pretty terrific. Beautiful view and we lived watching the ships pass on their way to the open ocean. The only complaint I would have is that the resort is so far north that it takes a while to get anywhere and the food was rather bland. I suppose that is likely the norm for many of these resorts. The drinks were also weak, but I suppose that’s how they keep guests from becoming drunken and disorderly. The resort and our room was clean and pest free and we felt quite safe.
