    Quick hit

We just stayed for a couple of days. Positives - good room for the price, small campus meaning everything is close, nice clean property and room, good privacy, comfortable beds, good service at beach bars. Challenges - food was marginal, service staff was grumpy on one occasion, slow check-in, room not ready when we got there. First night was loud with entertainment but did not bother us.

    Loved It

My wife an I recently enjoyed a 3 week stay at The Occidental Costa Cancun. Check in and out was effortless for us. We had a room with terrace, which was amazing, with a great view of resort and ocean. The room was immaculate and in perfect condition. The shower was huge with a bench and adjustable/detachable shower head. Never once had an issue with hot water. The climate control for the room worked perfectly and kept very comfortable. We both found the beds and pillows very comfortable and I actually took a picture of the mattress label to try to get one for home. House keeping did an amazing job with the room and the water/softdrinks/beer was refilled daily in the fridge. The entire resort is kept in immaculate condition. There is a buffet restaurant as well as a mexican/italian/seafood restaurant which will require reservations. We tried each restaurant and liked the mexican the most. We mainly ate at the buffet which had some of everything for everyone. We liked the food... versions of beef/chicken/pork/fish every day with plenty of salads, pastries, fresh fruit , vegetables, and deserts. They had a make your own pizza station which was cooked in a wood-fired stone oven. Burgers, hotdogs, fries, chilli, cheese for the picky eaters and kids. They have a well stocked 24 hr snack bar which also had breakfast, coffee machine, cereal, pastries in the morning....pizza , burgers , hotdogs, chicken nuggets, nachos, salsa, salad and fruit even deserts for afternoon and late night snacks. There is plenty of loungers around the pool and on the beach. Pool is very clean and maintained. You may still want to get up early for a lounger to get the premium sun locations. The beach itself is smaller and we knew that going there. It is kept clean and has a beach bar. I can't say enough about the staff at this resort. Everyone is very friendly, polite, accommodating and make you feel very welcome. There may be line ups to get into buffet for breakfast and dinner... but only during peak hours. The waiters and the greeters who seat you do an amazing job to clear tables quick for the next quests and the line generally moves pretty quick. While dinning... waiters are great and quick with drinks and again very friendly. The ladies serving around the pool are outstanding as well. As we were there for 3 weeks we got to know all of them. Bartenders also excellent. The only thing that slows them down is not having enough glasses which they have to clean with the help of the servers around the pool. WIFI on the resort works everywhere and i did not encounter any issues. Elevators are well maintained and we did not encounter any issues with waits or being out of service. The shows are outside which can get noisy if you are just chilling in your room but they shutdown at exactly 10 pm.... with the bar shutting down at 11pm. This resort is more family orientated and relaxing. Not a bunch of young drinkers partying. We are smokers... there is a place out front to smoke and just off to the side of the beach ( pick up your butts and put in garbage in beach area) ashtrays out front. If you have a room with a terrace you can smoke out there.. even ashtray supplied so you don't have to feel like a criminal for having a smoke. Occidental should be very proud of the staff they have at this resort... EVERYONE AMAZING. Just get the bartenders a bar auto washer for the glasses... they are very busy. We visit Mexico every winter and would not hesitate for a min to stay at this resort again.

Poor reception staff, hotel too small for amount of guests.

My stay was incredibly frustrating after dismissive interactions with multiple reception staff that flat-out told me "we won’t" fix the issues or give me a discount (or just a dinner reservation) despite room issues. I even emailed a week in advance to link my two bookings, but the hotel was completely unprepared and was more concerned with photocopying my family’s passports multiple times and wasting so much time checking in writing down info they already had. The property is severely overcapacity; you cannot get same-day dining reservations, the buffet has 20-minute lines out the door, and servers actively hurry guests out to flip tables. They also leave your bags just out in the open they do not have secure room for luggage. Our first room faced a loud, high-traffic highway (omitted from all photos/descriptions), making sleep impossible. When we moved to the "ocean view" room, we discovered there was no actual balcony just a sliding door that opened to nowhere. To make matters worse, there are zero palapas or umbrellas at the beach, leaving guests with no shade in the intense heat. Between the misleading room descriptions, and the "don't care" attitude from reception, this was the opposite of a relaxing vacation.
