Fantastic beachfront hotel with outstanding employees!
We stayed here for a recent conference held next door at the Fairmont. It was a superb experience! The hotel workers and on site amenities exceeded our expectations. We will definitely stay here in the future.

Not for us
As always there are pro's and cons. I would add that this type of large resort would not be our normal type of accommodation and we booked it for 5 day stay at end of a cruise. Pro's Great location on beach front. Good size pool Selection of restaurants Cons No shuttle service into Old San Juan (about $30 dollar taxi ride each way) Room was not cleaned on first day of our stay. Loud bass music from 11-3 at pool. (I admit I am an old fart but it was not as if anyone was dancing and destroyed ambiance of the place} Gym in need of refresh Lack of loungers at pool and allowing people to simply leave towels/personal items on loungers when not in use. Sound proofing in rooms very poor and could hear people talking/listening to tv in next room and doors slamming all night. Food was expensive given the quality. Overall probably a good family resort but do not really have anything else to compare it with. Not one for us though.

Dixy’s nomination for Employee of the month!!!
After being displaced from our hotel after our flights were cancelled due to Military action in Venezuela. After being rudely turned away from numerous other establishments we arrived at the Royal Sonesta where we were greeted by Dixy she was nothing short of AMAZING to deal with. From the moment we arrived at the front desk to the booking of our room she was fantastic. As an added bonus she went out of her way to get us early check in so we could finally relax by the pool with our children who were tired and cranky from days of traveling. Her kindness and professionalism was exemplary and I can’t say enough good things about our experience dealing with her!!! In a world where quality customer service is hard to find it was a breath of fresh air dealing with someone who genuinely cared about making our day more enjoyable! We will definitely be staying at the royal sonesta every time we visit San Juan going forward!!!

Inhospitable Front Desk Staff
The pool staff, Jenny and Javers are amazing. They hustle and their recommendations are fantastic! The front desk staff need to be retrained in hospitality. We had to check out when the airspace was closed. We were on a short list of people who needed to extend our stay because the airport was closed. It was quite evident the front desk had no plan, no compassion, no training on how to handle this type of situation. We were told the only way to extend our stay was to search and book additional nights on line. They are standing in front of me and are unable to help a guest. We went to the property next door. When they saw how distraught we were they gave us breakfast and told us they would set up cots for us in the ballroom if needed to provide us shelter until we could secure flights. We have stayed at Royal Sonesta several times and never will again. The ESJ next door is who I would recommend, or the Wyndham Rio Mar, those two resorts bent over backwards for their guests.
