Could be Fantastic

The grounds and ambience are great, unfortunately it was unseasonably cool in January and we didn't get in the pools or the ocean that much. The room was fine except we had to talk to the concierge to set our thermostat below 22 deg. C. Otherwise we could not lower it below that level. I don't know that everyone would ask about that. Also the fan in our room had only 2 speeds off and high. We mentioned that twice and it was not fixed before we left. The other annoyance was electricity. There was only a couple of outlets in the room and when you have many devices, it's difficult to keep everything charged up. The food was really only average at best. We were there for a wedding and the best meal we had was at the reception. Twice I had steak and it was over cooked. Breakfast was pretty good wherever we went though, especially on the Lindo side. I felt that the staff was pretty friendly, and we never met with our building Concierge to discuss excursions. I expect that part of that was a pitch at buying timeshare. We really didn't have time to waste on that anyway. But there was no hard sell on that. Since I was having Sciatica issues we asked for a golf cart several times so that we could be transported around and we never had to wait too long. Like I said the beach and pools were very nice and if the food was a little better this place would be one of the nicer places I've been in Mexico (4th visit). It was rated 4.5 stars, I would rate it less than 4 overall in my opinion.

Beware of the resort credit

Iberostar Maya is awesome. The pools were colder than expected. The beach has no reef around it, so the waves are big. If you like a wavy pool, the ocean here is like a wave pool that never ends. There are rocks that you can't see until you step on them so wear water shoes. If you want a chair at the beach, you need to wake up by 7 and walk down to the beach and put a towel and a personal item on your chairs. If you're lucky it will be there when you get back from breakfast. The reason I say this is because at about 10 A.M. there is a bunch of late comes that will take your stuff off of the chairs and move your chair. It's quite fun to watch. People here at this resort go to the beach from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. but after that you can get a chair petty easy, because they start to go get ready for dinner. The Bartenders are nice and the food is plentiful. The taste is fine, I don't go on vacation to find good food, so at this resort there is plenty of food all over, and it is just fine. The workers are wonderful, they deserve your tips!!! If you want to go somewhere on the resort there is always a golf cart to take you. (bring lots of dollar bills) The best part of this resort is the FREE SPA. You can go to the spa and use every thing there. The only exception is that if you would like a massage that costs extra. We found better deals on any thing you want to bring back with you from Mexico, such as t-shirts, jewelry, souvenirs that we all buy on vacation, at the resort. On certain days different stores will have huge discounts. Don't forget to barter on the beach with the vendors and at the jewelry stores. If you have never went scuba diving before, and you want to try it, you can here through the dive shop just ask. It's not cheep but you don't have to be certified. The resort credit is useless. I found nowhere it would work for any thing that a person would want. The shows were fun. Each night the different resorts would have different shows, sometimes the same show at different resorts on separate nights. We went to Coba on a tour and the tour guide told us to leave our cameras in the van he will have people take pictures for us, so we did. At the end of 2 hour tour, we get to a place and the tour guy tried to sell us the pictures for $120!!!! I thought that was crazy, no one that we were with bought the pictures. So the only pics of that tour is in our minds eye. (bummer) The moral of the story is don't listen when the guy says he will take pics for you. You can bring along a water-proof case for the phone and it should be just fine for taking pictures with. Cheaper and easier. Their is no ocean view room here. You can walk on the beach for miles. They do a great job at cleaning up the sand each day to make sure the beach is clean for the guests on vacation. They also have a food area on the beach and a bar so you don't have to walk all the way back to the main area resort for food if you just want a small snack.

Great experience

Honestly after the negative press about this resort, I was very concerned about our vacation (which had been booked 8 months in advance.) My worries turned out to be for naught as everything was perfect. Our room and the resort were very clean with housekeeping twice a day. Check in was easy and quick, and the concierge handled all of our restaurant reservations while we grabbed a snack at the taco bar. The resort is huge. Even with the map, we found ourselves kind of lost at times. We didn't use the trams but did get in a lot of walking. The food was very good. The buffet was mostly the same food everyday, but had everything you could ever want to eat for breakfast including a taco bar, a smoothie bar, sandwiches, fresh fruit, a yogurt station and made to order eggs and omelettes. We ate at all the Specialty restaurants. Japanese Hibachi was our favorite, followed by the steak house. The steak house shares an appetizer/salad/dessert buffet with the Seafood restaurant but serves individual entrees. The red wine at the Steak house was excellent. The pools were clean and spacious if a bit chilly. We were with 5 teenage boys who always found room for a football or basketball game. We didn't have much trouble finding chairs. The swim up bar was fun. The poolside waitresses were attentive. The beach was a bit crowded and rocky probably the least favorite part of our stay. The chairs were all "reserved" with towels early in the morning. The resort offers an "upgrade" which guarantees you a seat in the reserved section for $40./day. We decided not to do that but to go to the beach late in the day to avoid the crowds. The beach bar was good, and it was very convenient to have the food stand right at the beach. The entire staff was welcoming and warn. We often tipped our servers, but at no time did I feel they were expecting one. The other guests were also nice - an international mix of Americans, Canadians, Germans, French, Argentinians, Russians... We enjoyed talking to people we met. We did 2 excursions, one to Tulum and the beach there and one fishing expedition. Both were first rate. The beach at Tulum was beautiful! We forgot our towels so our van driver took us to a grocery store to buy some. At no point did any of us feel unsafe or uneasy. As one of our guides said, tourism is the heart of their economy and it is in all of their interest to keep it so. Everyone really went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The only negative aspect was the hard sell during the first 2 days to join the Iberostar club. They say it is not 'timeshare junk' but its the same idea. We spent a week at the resort - nine of us, and none of us wanted to leave. We only discovered the sports bar at the other resort the day before we left! There is a lot to do, and much we didn't take advantage of. Our boys were never bored and could go off on their own to play tennis or ping pong. We could have happily spent another week there. We were there during Christmas week but it didn't feel overcrowded. I highly recommend it! We will be back - maybe without the kids at the adults only resort....

mexican paradise

the visit to this resort in Mexico was like being in heaven for six days. As soon as you drive in the relaxation starts. There are activities going all day long giving a great selection of what such as beach volleyball, water aeorbics & even Salsa Dancing. The entertainment staff work very hard to make you feel special and part of the resort for the length of your stay. I rate this resort a 10 plus. We took one day out of the resort and did a private tour to the ruins and that was amazing. I would recommend this resort for anyone who wants fun and relaxation. We are planning to check out the resort in Miami Florida next. Happy new year.
