Overall impression

This is the first time I have been on a vacation and felt as though I were an inconvenience to those who were there to serve. How you are treated while staying at a resort is what truly makes an impression. This resort was disappointing in that respect. When we entered a restaurant, we were rarely greeted with a welcoming smile. We were taken to a seat without a word- simply a point to a table and then that person was gone. Sometimes someone would come to offer a drink and sometimes that person was attentive and polite, but not always. There were a lot of options for food but it was average on taste and temperature. The labeling system was a little difficult to learn so you don't always know what you're eating. But breakfast was very good! They advertise that there are 13 restaurants but all the buffets serve the same thing- they are just in different locations. The nicest restaurant which is on the ocean isn't included in the all-inclusive which would have been nice to know before booking. We tried to get a reservation at one of the other restaurants, but there were no times available before 9pm unless we booked out 3 days in advance. However, when we walked by the resatuarant, there were literally not even half the tables taken. Perhaps people make reservations and then don't show up? The drinks were great! However the service at the bar was like at the restaurants- not at all welcoming. The pools were quite cold, but they were clean. They advertise that the water sports are all inclusive. When we went to go sailing, they asked if I knew how to sail. When I replied "no" I was told it would be $30. If I could sail, it would be free. The activity people on the beach were great- Cecilia and Miguel were engaging, interactive, and a lot of fun! I liked the tennis and basketball courts. The resort overall was well maintained and clean. The housekeeping staff did a great job freshening up the room every day. The check in and check out process was a fiasco for us. When I arrived to check in, they did not have our reservation. Thankfully, I had all my documents and emails showing our reservation. After almost 2 hours, we were able to check in. When I went to check out, there was a problem with the system and they couldn't do that immediately either. Thankfully I had another hour before having to leave for the airport because it took nearly that whole time to complete the process. There are many negative reviews about how large and spread out the resort is. I personally liked that. I enjoy walking and seeing the scenery. I could go out for a 3 mile run each morning and see all corners of the resort which was great. So, overall, there were good and bad at this resort.

Food

Everything but the food was great. The resort touts having numerous restaurant options. When we arrived, the resort had booked two dinners for us already, only to find out they were all booked the other nights. The food was nothing to brag about and the buffet areas were sketchy. And when the restaurants say they are booked, they mean they are half full.

Price effective

We had been looking at options to visit Playa Del Carmen for quite some time and happened to stumble upon this one before of a cheapcarribean email so we hopped on it.. I will see it is a price efficient option, but we have been to way better resorts in Cancun. Resort is actually very nice, and quite large. very easy to get lost around the resort. All bartenders and service staff were very accomadating. Lots of older relaxed people as well as young partiers, which was perfect because my group was the perfect mix of both. Poolside drinks were great and plentiful. Majitos were my favorite.. Pools were decent, some activities to do, not as much as other resorts we have been to. Beach volleyball was neat, lots of people gathered around that and we played for quite some time. Beach is okay, nothing special.. Lifeguard always on duty for the little ones. Bar close by for the grownups. The big letdown for us was the food. The morning buffet was terrible, the only thing we found edible was the omlettes they made for you. The buffet during the day was just as bad. Lots of options, but everything we tried was dissapointing. The resturants were very mediocre at best. The chinese resturant tasted like everything was drenched in BBQ sauce.. yes BBQ sauce at a chinese resturant. The steak place was meh as well, steaks were not good. I think we ended up ordering extra salads. Italian restuarant was the closest thing we got to a positive review, i would of down that 4 nights in a row if i knew everything else was going to be a let down. Room was quite spacious, we upgraded to the exterior jacuzzi, however never used it because it looks dirty. Inside of room was very nice and clean, shower was large and bathroom accomadating nicely for a family. Overall, it is price effeicent i just dont think we would come back because its a very basic and generic resort. Nothing stood out to us as something to talk about for years to come. If you are on a budget, i do recommend this one, but i would recommend splurging the extra money and find something better, which we will do next time.

Not worth the money

I had never stayed at an all inclusive before this, so it could be that I had too high of expectations. It definitely did not feel like I got my money's worth. The food at the buffets was not good tasting at all. At first I thought perhaps the various flavors were just new and different to my palate, but after experiencing great food at a buffet at Xcaret (excursion) and dinner one night at a regular restaurant at Grand Princess (a la carte is how they refer to those restaurants at the resort), I realized that the buffet food was just poor quality. Very disappointing. And to make matters worse, the reservation process for the a la carte places, at least for my level of purchase, was not customer friendly. I could not make reservations online or by phone. I had to go to a special area of the resort and do it in person. When I went to do so, the prime evening dinner times were always fully booked. 9:00 PM was the standard offering. It appeared to me that the prime times were blocked off to perhaps save the best for higher level guests or something like that. Another big problem was that the bed sheets and pillow cases constantly smelled bad, like a sour or mildew odor. I complained after the first day. It didn't seem to change much. I suspect that it is the way they launder the linen, perhaps with unfresh water, too little or poor quality detergent, etc. The actual quality of the sheets was low, too. Rough feeling to the skin. People appeared to be having fun, especially those who were enjoying the alcohol, so maybe I was expecting too much. With the poor food and bed linen issues, I just didn't feel like I was at a high quality resort. The service was great from all of the workers--waiters, housekeeping, etc.
