It was okay

My husband and I we're celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary which I notated during my reservation nobody at the hotel even took the slightest second to leave a nice no or a bottle of champagne or something in our room just to make us feel a little bit extra special for this special occasion. The ocean had way too much seaweed so unfortunately we didn't get to enjoy that too much which is not to blame the hotel and this is just Mother Nature. The one thing that I would like to say is that they do need to have more no pork options and all their food should be clearly marked because a lot of people don't eat pork either for religious reasons or allergies and it would be nice to know what has instead of asking the chefs every 5 feet what's in the food. Overall my experience was okay to be honest not likely that I will ever visit this hotel again.

Beautiful resort....would go back

Overall, the Grand Riviera Princess Resort is beautiful and I would go back. The all-inclusive deal was great and included airfare. It was great to escape the rash of snowstorms hitting Massachussetts (even though I enjoy the snow). The Grand Riviera views are stunning, well maintained grounds, and friendly staff. The pools were immaculate and refreshing. The poolside staff members were attentive and always busy. Do take time to enjoy the poolside activities, the dance instructor was fun to watch and could that boy move (graceful and probably has better hip movements than most women). The tram drivers were awesome....very nice, amusing, and helpful! The all-inclusive deal was great, not having to worry about carrying cash/credit cards, and they know how to make delicious cocktails. The trek from the area we stayed at to the Lobby areas was about a 20 minute, or so, walk (my brain was definitely on vaca mode, because I thought it was a short walk, even though it took 5-10 minutes by tram from Lobby to our rooms). It was good exercise though. DO book restaurant reservations in advance! We had to take what we could get because we did not reserve in advance. I am not sure why reservations have to be made at the restaurants, none were terribly busy, possibly a staffing issue. The food was a disappointment, but that seems to be par for the course at all the Cancun resorts I have been to, and I am not a foodie. The breakfast buffet was okay, better if you had an omelet made for you. The best meal was at Las Olas (seafood, and seafood is a staple in New England), then Fleur (French cuisine and I thought the Cordon Bleu Chicken was a bit dry, but yummy). The downside, besides the food, was the Cheap Caribbean Concierge. The concierge person herself was peppy and upbeat. Unfortunately, we arrived late and were not able to check in with the Concierge the day we arrived (as we were instructed to do). I opted to go for our group the next morning and was informed that all members of our group had to be there, but no reasoning as to why. I believe it is so they can try to push the off-resort excursions and other activities. Also, I do not understand why it is necessary to have to go back to see the concierge the day prior to departure, when all I have had to do on other travels is call the day before to confirm airport transportation. I do recommend purchasing transportaion to and from the airport. We were informed that we were upgraded to the Platinum Sunset area of the resort near the beach, and views from the rooms were gorgeous. The rooms were very clean, but one room had an issue with bugs. One member of our group had issues with bug bites during our stay and I had few bites that showed up the day we left, the other two members of our group did not have any bug problems. Two minor issues were requests made at the Platinum Sunset conceierge. We inquired about laundry service and were told to let them know when it was ready to be picked up and they would send someone to retrieve it and laundry would be back the next day. I let them know it was ready at round 8:30am, and it was still in the room at 4pm. I discussed the situation with the concierge, different person from earlier in the day, and she was able to have someone collect laundry. The clean laundry was returned the next morning. The other instance was we had an early flight and transportation to leave the resort was scheduled for 4:30am (ugh). We asked the concierge at Platinum Sunset if someone would be available to take us to the Riviera lobby to check out and assured that a tram would be there at 4:20am. He also said that if we had our luggage ready by 4am, someone would pick it up. Our luggage was never picked up (not a big deal as were are all capable of carrying our own luggage), We were down in the lobby at 4:10am, possibly earlier, talked with the concierge who seemed to have no idea about the arrangments, and he called to ensure someone was on their way, but no one ever showed up. At 4:25am we talked with the concierge again and was told someone would be there in a few minutes. At 4:35am when still no one was there, we informed the concierge again that our transportation to the airport was at 4:30am. I think the resort driver arrived at 4:40am. Also, the Cheap Caribbean concierge told us to check out in the Riviera Lobby, but we were supposed to check out at the Sunset Lobby (a few minutes drive from Riviera Lobby). Thankfully, the transport to the airport was there. Check out was fast (because what crazy people check out before the crack of dawn!) Simple answer is nurses and physical therapists who had to be at work at 7am the next day. Anyway, sorry for the long review, but I would go back to Grand Princess Riviera.

Grand Disappointment

Unfortunately this resort was a huge let down. My husband and I saved up vacation time and money with the hopes of spending a relaxing and enjoyable weekend in Playa. After checking in and being shown our room (staff did great with this) things went downhill. The customer service at the Grand Princess overall is poor. We were asked to leave the beach area because apparently we were in the wrong section. There was no staff around to direct or guide or proper signage to explain where regular resort guests can go and it wasn't necessary for them to make a scene. Staff seemed aloof and unwilling to help in the most basic ways such as giving directions when we got lost one evening or helping us get meal reservations. When asked for a wake up call and ride for our bags at check out neither was provided and we had to walk from our room to the front desk which quite a distance. On top of that the food is not good. I would not recommend visiting this place at all. Not worth the money.

Very Impressed

Just came back from Grand Riviera Princess (GRP) using CheapCaribbean (CC) for the first time. This was one of our best trips to Playa Del Carmen (PDC). From the very beginning CC had great communication with their emails. When we arrived at the airport in PDC it was easy to find out CC transport and they got us going right away. Also when we were leaving GRP on the last day our transport was there within 5 minutes of their estimated time and got us straight back to the airport. We have been going to the PDC area over the last 25 years and have hit probably 9-10 all-inclusive resorts, GRP was probably the best. The resort itself was in great and upgraded condition. The main plaza was impressive. Everything was clean and the grounds were beautiful. All the bathrooms were upscale and clean. The buffets were again upscale looking and kept clean. Food in the buffet main restaurants were some of the best food and variety we have seen. The buffet restaurants by the pool were okay. We got upgraded to a swim out suite which was awesome! All the pools were beautiful. The staff was friendly and helpful. The reservation restaurants were easy to get reservations and were delicious. You have to visit the hidden ice cream shop and the sports bar at night was great. Our room was beautiful and very nice. The beach was beautiful. There was seaweed this time of year (not the resort's fault). Walking out into the ocean there were a few rocks for about 5 feet, but after that it was clear. There was plenty of entertainment during the day and at night everyday. We just loved our trip. We felt very safe on resort and even went into town during the day, using the shuttle from the resort, which was on time for pickup times both ways. Can say enough out CC and GRP.
