Large suites, fun waterpark, fine service

We stayed here for 4 nights over Christmas and generally had a very pleasant experience. We went as a family with my two kids (3 and 5.5). We stayed at the Family Concierge swim-up master suite and loved our room. It was very spacious and we could easily fit both kids in the living space (with my 3yo being on a rollaway cot that they provided). The swim-up aspect was nice when we wanted a break from the beach and waterpark but still wanted to be in the water. We did have a couple of issues when we first checked in but our concierge fixed them very quickly. The first was that the outdoor jacuzzi was not draining, the second was that the rollaway cot we requested wasn't in our room. But like I said, our concierge took care of it immediately and even checked the next day to see if the jacuzzi was working. I was a little apprehensive about the beach being a shuttle ride away, but really didn't need to. The shuttle was very frequent and was a very quick ride. Honestly, the shuttle was probably better for us as minimal walking was required. Availability of beach chairs was never an issue and some families got beach toys as their Concierge gift (our was a ping pong set) and they were very happy to share with our kids. The beach was full of seaweed which we expected, but it was not cleaned at all which some reviews had mentioned. It wasn't a huge deal but my kids didn't want to walk in the sand close to the water or go into the ocean. The sandy area where the beach chairs were had no seaweed. We loved the waterpark! It's best suited for younger kids (<10yo) and my kids had a blast. The snack shack was great for a break but the food did take a while. Generally speaking, speed and service was hit or miss. We had to aggressively flag down waiters to get service at the beach and the buffet for coffee, and some servers/bartenders seemed that they'd rather not be there. The quality of food was decent, not the best but not the worst either. The cocktails were all quite delicious though. We went with the Concierge based on reviews saying that restaurant reservations were impossible without it. I can't say that it was great with the Concierge either. It seemed like we couldn't make a reservation until the day off? Our concierge was able to get us a reservation every night at the time we wanted, but we went to one restaurant 2 times for dinner (out of 4 nights) when we would have preferred to try something different. I don't know what the hierarchy of reservations were but it did not seem like we had any choice we wanted. The opening times of the restaurants were also a little later than we'd prefer. Lunch is not available *anywhere* until 12:30pm, which was tricky when my kids were hungry by 11am. I learned to stuff some rolls from the breakfast buffet to tide them over. There were a number of activities organized and they definitely made Christmas feel festive. We also had access to the FunRepublic which is part of a different resort, they had an indoor playground, mini golf, rope course, etc. We didn't drop our kids off at the kids club but I saw the staff leading groups of kids around for various activities, including going to the waterpark. All in all, we had a great time!

Tried swindling me out of my reservation!

I booked a Master Suite and was given Family Concierge Suite and was told no more rooms were available. After arguing with the front desk for 2 hours about how i booked the room 11 months prior my arrival, a Master Suite suddenly became available. This treatment was unacceptable. A resort should honor reservations once they’re booked/paid for. Also, the building management system is programmed to turn the air conditioning off at 2am, which calls for warm, balmy nights.

Nube was amazing! The service and bartenders provided an unforgettable experience! 10/10 would 100% recommend that bar!

    Terrible Service and Value

This was my 3rd time at this Paradisus location (first two were at The Reserve - now called Zel, and this time at Grand Cana, previously called the Grand Reserve). We paid a large premium for a swim-up room. The Good - room was good, the patio was great with access to a long common pool great for swimming lengths. The common areas were very clean, grounds were beautiful and well kept. The Bad - the resort is not a well-run operation. I noticed a significant deterioration in service, food quality from the last 2 times. The App to order room service did not work, the front desk knew about this and suggested I call from the room. The room phone did not work - I complained 3 times about it to the front desk concierges - took 4 days to fix it. The resort ran out of beach towels daily. Since the room was a swim-up you would think they would provide beach towels. Nope - just the first day - never got any more even though requested multiple times. Buffet was just Ok, not a premium level. Common to see lack of replenishment of food items even though never that busy. Individual restaurants all featured additional costs for "premium" menu items - not cool when you are paying $1500 USD per day for 3 people in 1 room to stay there for the "all-inclusive package". Beach service was intermittent, ran out of many drinks - no Aperol Coke Zero etc. The beach lounges area was very dirty by the end of the day - lack of cleaning of used cups,, food items etc. One evening a group of young kids playing soccer inside the main lounge areas outside the buffet. I got hot with a ball. No staff in sight in the evening to stop this. Complaints to staff not addressed - lots pf passing the buck . Not worth the money. And some unintentional comedy - i got a customer service email after i checked out from addressed from the "Manager" of the hotel. I looked her up on LinkedIn. She left the company in May. Does the Melia head office in Spain really know whats going on here?

    Terrible service. Not 5 stars.

I do not recommend. After staying in multiple 5 star resorts this is definitely not one. Service was terrible. By far the only ppl that saved this resort was Anthony at Mangu for LUNCH and the staff at the pool bar. Besides these mentioned, all other staff members were unkind and inattentive. It was like we were bothering them with simply requests like “can I get a juice, or a bottle water, a beer possibly” We couldn’t get reservations for any of the restaurants besides one evening at Mangu, which was a disaster. Staff simply ignored our table and food came after 2 hours, mind you our 11 month old at that point was cranky and hungry. I had to ask for our food for it to finally come at 9:30pm. Our reservation was at 7:30pm - it was empty so no reason for the delay or simply ignoring our table. My margarita came with no ICE and WARM, my kids orange juice never arrived. We were always tipping and being nice. This was the first time that we complained because it was unacceptable. This is just ONE example of how terrible service was at this resort. One positive note - room was nice! I had a late check out at 4pm, however, our bracelet stopped working at 12pm, and I had to wait about 30 mins to deal with it, missing lunch with my 3 kids before we left. For a 5 star hotel, this place falls short from it. Also the complete lack of information is unfortunate. We had “family concierge” our concierge was not very attentive or helpful. We were never introduced to this person until late on the 2nd day of our arrival because I actually had to go look for him. Just overall very unfortunate! Won’t be coming back.
