Staying in Marriot, Cayman Islands
We had a great time overall celebrating my daughter's birthday. It is a nice hotel, but a bit outdated especially for the Marriott standards.
What we liked: good service, excellent personnel, location
What we didn't like: no beach, it says everywhere 2 steps to beach. this hotel lost their beach, there is no beach. Bunch of chairs and umbrellas in the pool and people are on each other, no space between at all. Pool Is very small, it is extremely crowded and noisy.
It has just one restaurant on the beach, one bar and café inside. Crepes in the morning and smoothie/juice are amazing.
Most of the hotels offer complimentary airport shuttle. Marriot doesn't even though hotel is located close to airport.
Overall we had a pleasant experience.
Thank you
We have been coming to this hotel for over 30 years, originally when it was a Radisson and then converted to Marriott in the early 90's. We often extended our annual time share by another week at least 20 times over the years and have witnessed a lot of changes at the Marriott in terms of decor, room condition, food and overall service. Gone are the days of beautifully decorated rooms. Now the rooms ( although still spacious) have old dark furniture, old carpet, old bath fixtures, cracked/beyond dull marble floors and tub sides. Rooms are in poor condition for a hotel that claims to be 4 stars. The main lobby has "transitioned" to modern, with danish "economy"-style furniture. The ultra modern bar, enormously long is a testimony to the $20 US drinks and $5 Coca colas. There used to be Concierge service, day and night in the lobby, with several computers for use by guests. That has been replaced by a desk up on the third floor hallway with a part-time Concierge and only one computer for printing boarding passes. Outside, the beach is so badly eroded that only one row of chairs is allowed on what remains of the beach, jammed up to the sea wall with the front of the chairs in the water. The side stairs over by Regal Beach, next door, has the last step ending in the water. This is not Marriott's fault and it will improve if ever there is another storm that "brings the sand back" in some future year. The small footprint around the pool doesn't allow for many chairs and if only one row of chairs is allowed on the beach, there will be a free for all over the limited seating when high season starts in December.
Knowing we were coming to the Marriott, we booked a reservation at the Veranda for the lobster dinner on Open Table for Wednesday night of our stay. A day before we get an email back from Open Table saying that our reservation was canceled ... no explanation. Since there was no Concierge available, I went down to the front desk and was told that the Veranda was under renovations, and management decided to cancel all the reservations. So we opted to go to Decker's, down the street for their "Tuesday night all you can eat lobster dinner which was $28 CI cheaper per person than the Veranda ($49.95 CI vs $78 CI for Marriott). Guess Marriott did us a favor by canceling our reservation. Of course, the day of, they sent us a formal letter saying we actually did have a reservation . We canceled. In all fairness we did have one very good meal in the Anchor and Den at Sunday brunch with superb service by Anthonie. Then again, for $90 US per person, it should be very good..... Breakfast brunch at $36 US was a bit of a disappointment due to poor selection. No fresh squeezed juice here. The eclectic set up of dining tables, which literally can be in the lobby is kind of screwy. It was a zoo walking around the whole dining area for the Sunday brunch .
Be aware that the "resort fee" per room per night is now up to $60. Marriott has notes on line and all over the place about all the amenities you are getting for the $60 per night ( $420 per week) ... trying to justify the outrageous charge. But honestly, how many people can and will take advantage of the so-called amenities, which are limited even by Marriott's statement on the Resort fee list? The pool snacks consisted of a slice of pineapple ( or watermelon) once a day, cucumber or lemon water and free glasses of ice water served at the pool. We never got our complimentary drink upon check in as promised. The resort fee is a gimmick to make it appear that the room is cheaper than it actually is. A $250 room is really $310. Good luck getting a bicycle rental or Go Pro camera to use when the hotel says these are limited. We only saw two kayaks the whole time we were there, and they were pretty much always in use.
Gone are the days of really good service, pretty decor, up-to-date rooms. While the staff is very pleasant and congenial, you honestly get the feeling that they want you to "Send your money .... but stay home". At least the gorgeous turquoise water, not under Marriott's control, doesn't disappoint. We had glorious weather the whole week, possibly the best weather and water we have ever seen in all the years traveling to GCM. Unfortunately for those who want to just lay out on the beach ... well it's gone.
If you are travelling to Grand Cayman you must accept that it is expensive. Very expensive especially at this resort. One of the locals sitting at the bar was shocked by the price of his drink. The resort shop was selling candles for roughly $50 USD. I never saw anyone buying anything there. The main reason we go to Seven Mile Beach is for- the beach. But there is none at the Marriot unfortunately. Just a line of beach chairs pushed up against a sort of retaining wall which disappear quickly if you’re not up by 7am to stake your claim. I understand that the Marriot is going to take on Mother Nature and try to reclaim the beach in the near future. But for now it’s the pool for most. Overall the resort is very nice. I would go again but armed with the knowledge that I won’t be sitting on the beach.
The lack of beachfront is made up by the wonderful personality of all the staff ! These people are truly wonderful - from the bartenders ( Danny ) to the front reception to the pool passing fruit and sunscreen guys . No one is cranky ! They great you with big smiles which certainly brightens a vacation . They seem to truly enjoy working at the Marriott . It's our 5th time here , we stayed at the Westin first but opted for the Marriott on each return trip after visiting our friends here .
You will love it !

How to coordinate travel when living in different cities3 answers
My fiancee and Ilive in different cities, is there a way to arrange flights to depart and arrive in the city where each person resides?
8 years, 99 months ago
Felinecrl
Hi,
Booking a vacation with departures from two different cities is not a problem at all, although you are not able to do this online. Simply call one of our experienced destination specialists who would be happy to assist you in booking your vacation.
ccsusan1
Depending on the cites that you live in I would suggest each of you fly first to an airline hub airport and then on to your final destination together. If one of you lives in a hub airport area then you should start onward travel from there. On the return trip just reverse the travel arrangements.
TheCommodore
I came from location and my friend came from another. We simply met in the airport because the airport is so small. My suggestion is that you both get out of customs, because the lines can take forever.. and either meet at the hotel you are both staying at OR at the airport exit doors. There is only one set of airport exit doors in Grand Cayman so it's easy to find them.

The Grand Cayman Marriott requires a minimum occupancy of 2 adults to qualify for certain specials, however a maximum of 4 passengers is allowed in each room.

Room had two full beds. If kids can sleep in the same bed, family of four fit fine.
ScubaFamily
you can put 4 in a room. The rate is per room and not per person. The room will cost you the same if you have one person in the room or 4 people

Snorkeling fees at the Marriott?11 answers
I am staying at the Marriott this coming July, I did not purchase the "all inclusive" package. I definitely want to snorkel just off the beach at the Marriott, are there fees for this? I would need the snorkel equipment as well, please let me know what the fees are, if any.
Thanks so much!!!!
6 years, 80 months ago
DC
Because rates are subject to change, there are no rates listed on their website. If you would like to speak to the resort directly, just to see if they can give you a price (if there is any), they do have a toll-free number. 1-800-223-6388. Thank you!
RobinCC
Have been to the GC Marriott twice. No fees to snorkel off the beach. They have a dive shop there where you can rent equipment or you can do so for less at a shop down the street (or bring your own). The Marriott is one of the few hotels there that participates in an artificial reef program to increase the reef structure so there is fairly good snorkeling right in front of the hotel. There are several public beach sites around the island that have good snorkeling with no fees as well.
Take a trip to Sting Ray City. Well worth it for the experience.
TrojanFan
About 30 dollars US for 24 hours for 2 people.
aceflyer
I believe the price to rent snorkel equipment is 25 dollars U.S.
Tab2
There aren't any fees to snorkel right off the beach, the only fee you would have would be to rent snorkel gear. My recommendation would be to buy a cheap snorkel ($20) on Amazon and save the fee of rental. I'm sure it probably pays in the long run. Grand Cayman is expensive, so buy as much in the US as possible. That's what we did and we were able to enjoy the snorkeling right off the beach our entire stay without worrying about returning the gear. Hope this helps! We just got back and loved our stay in GC.
pacexcel10
The hotel has a booth where you can rent equipment. If you have your own mask, you just walk into the water for free. You can rent sailboat, jetski (kinda pricey of $85 for I think 45 mins, though I think they run specials of like $70). I didn't see too many people renting the jetskis.
howard007
Fees are $15 a day for snorkel equipment. My wife and I bought some and took our own, I would totally recommend that. You will want to be out there everyday you're there. We got a good deal on the mask and snorkel at bass pro shops.
drewchy
It is fifteen dollars in US currency a day to rent snorkel equipment, fins and a mask, for 24 hours. Red sail rents out the equipment. I would bring my own mask because the ones they provide are average- not great. I had to clear my mask very frequently and it didn't fit the best.
beachgirl80
Snorkeling is easy at Marriott. They rent what you need by the day and have an artificial reef with lots of fish right to the hotel. We're amateurs and had a blast. Watch out for the pelican fishing while you snorkel Ha you will love it. Cost was $15/day US at hotel or buy from dive shop.
COmtnman
you can rent the equipment at the hotel for about $15-30
There are no fees to snorkel you just pay for the vest, fins, etc
dianajgut
No fees for snorkling off the beach, you can snorkel all you want along the beaches but they do close at sunset. Snorkel equipment rental was $15 for every 24 hours.

For specific questions regarding snorkeling , we do suggest contacting the resort directly as they would be best to assist with your inquiry. The toll free telephone number for the resort is #800-223-6388.
MariaCC
No, the snorkeling equipment was not included.
angeroroleo
Goggles tube and fins for $15 US worked great
COmtnman
No. No water sports are included.
dianajgut
Full snorkel set up included mask goggles with attached air tube and slipper fins. It was only $15 for every 24 hours.
CALIDUDE
Mask, fins, and snorkel. Also bag to carry it in. This hotel rents the gear on site.
Cott
We just returned from Marriott Grand Cayman where they rented the gear right at the hotel--it was $15 per 24 hours for renting snorkeling gear, which includes mask/snorkel tube, and fins.
abqpjh
Usually it is the face mask, air thing and fins. If you are swimming along 7 mile beach, you probably only need the mask and air thing. I found mine on amazon.com at a really reasonable rate.
JerseyGrl2013
snorkel, mask and fins
Tracee2013
They will rent Snorkel, mask & Fins. But you can also just rent the Snorke & Mask only if you do not want or need the fins. You can rent by the day also.
jabear
At the Marriott we could rent the mask and snorkel and the fins, however we did not use the fins so we jsut rented the mask and snorkel and charged them to our room.
xyzz
At the Marriot Beach Resort the snorkel rental included the mask, snorkel and fins for $15.00 for 24hrs.

Can I extend my return air reservation. I plan on staying an extra week with friends?3 answers

New Jersey
Yes. Please contact one of our beach experts at 1-800-915-2322 and they will be happy to assist you in making your reservation. Unfortunately, the website does not offer the option to make a booking of this sort online from home.
BILLCC
I had to extend my reservation due to missing our flight and check-in and they were happy to do so.
CALIDUDE
Contact the cheapcaribbean.com directly if they handled your reservation. The airlines cannot make modifications to your reservation as it is held by cc. There will be a change fee plus difference in fare. You might be better served to look into a one-way flight fare back from Grand Cayman to see if you can get a cheap one-way back versus the expense of changing. Just a thought.

Can I up grade to an ocean view room?5 answers
6 years, 77 months ago
rascal
The resort does offer partial ocean view and ocean front room categories, however, this would need to be upgraded directly with the resort upon arrival.
MariaCC
Actually, the rooms we were given were facing another hotel and had scaffolding up to the top floor and workers there if you wanted to sleep late. Fortunately I am Premier Elite and got moved up to a Courtyard Room but they said there weren't any Ocean Views available.
Buzzoff13
Yes, but it will cost you over $100 a night, if available.
Cloach
Yes but call early because there are limited ocean view rooms. This is a smaller resort.
Kenr06
The hotel can upgrade if the rooms are available but a courtyard view room will be much quieter.

As this particular resort is not all inclusive, food and beverages are not included. Please be advised that guests may be required to present a credit card at the time of check-in to provide confirmation of authorized card use or to secure any additional expenses.
MariaCC
No, there are no additional or hidden fees
langperf
I think resort fee was included in the bill from Cheap Caribbean and no additional at the hotel. Looks like resort fee would be added automatically when we booked the hotel. The resort fee includes bicycle rental, children toys, wifi connection, etc. I valued on wifi.
Uruma
With our recent package, resort fee was included with the package. It was around $45/day, but then we also had a $41/day food credit. This gave access to free Wi-Fi on resort, etc.
hipmom
no the resort fee is included in the price. they do put a $100 hold on your credit card per night for security. and that is released within 10 days of leaving.

AlixCC
We did not have an additional fee when we checked in at the hotel.

The fee will be added in the booking process on Caribbean so you will pay it anyways but online while booking and not at the hotel

The resort fee is included and is a great deal. You get some

The beach is crowded with beach chairs and people. That said, you can walk a short distance away and find wide open beaches where you are free to lay down a towel. Also, you can bicycle or take a care to other lovely beaches nearby.
Agilista
Beach chairs are super close and the hotel was very busy. The staff does do a wonderful job taking care of your needs.

What is a good estimate for meals for a day for a family of 4? Also do any of the buffet options let young kids eat free (I have a 4 and 6 yr old)5 answers

TimCC
Its definitely expensive as the Cayman dollar is stronger than the Us dollar. Family of four for a breakfast, lunch and dinner probably around$225.00
Grandeur
We averaged at least $100 per meal for our family of 4, higher for the meals we at at the resort. There are restaurants within walking distance that were a little less expensive than the resort.
WalkerVT
I would say the average meal pp is $15-30 US dollars. It does get very pricey when you add alcohol. We planned for $300.00 a day, but my kids are older.
Cocop
At least $300 if you do not do the buffets. I spent over 60 per meal for just myself and my girlfriend with the exception of breakfast which came to 30 for two pastries and coffees. Don't get me started on costs of drinks.
