Happy With our Stay

We had some hesitations about traveling in Mexico and kept off our list for many years. We decided to give it a try and were very happy with our stay. There was a mix of pros and cons, but overall, it was a great trip and we would recommend GR Solaris. Service- Our service was very good. We had a rep from our travel agency (CheapCaribbean) onsite, but due to their location in the resort, we were nabbed up by concierge first. Our concierge, Karla, was very sweet. What we didn't like, though, was being bombarded with sales (not just at the resort). The "free gifts" we were given were primarily discount coupons. We made reservation for a 30 minute massage and it turns out it wasn't a $35 value, but that we would pay $35 each (and there were 3 of us). We decided to forego travel to Tulum to get those massages, but didn't set aside $105 for massages, so that was a big disappointment. We were appreciative of the Isla Mujeres coupons, however (that was a very good excursion). More Sales- We agreed to participate in vacation club presentation, but the timeframe was not honored. The salesperson was wonderful. We agreed to the 90 minute presentation (which included breakfast and a tour), but we were there for 2.5hrs. Part of the sales presentation included promise of no beach peddlers. They were EVERYWHERE! Same 6-7 peddlers coming by about every 10 minutes. Front Desk- I called and asked for a sewing kit and they said it'd be brought up right away. After 45 minutes, I went downstairs and was told someone would be right up. I went downstairs again 30 minutes later and asked again and someone gave me a sewing kit. Room Service- One evening I called room service for 4 bottles of water twice (over a 3 hr period) so we could bring along to Chichén Itzá and they were never brought. I thought maybe they'd be outside our door in the morning. I called room service again in the morning (2x nobody answered) and they were brought within 10 minutes. Pool- I loved that there were shade options to enjoy the pool! We were able to get to pool by about 10am and get chairs, but no umbrellas. It's annoying that people save prime chairs & umbrellas with towels and then disappear for hours. It'd be nice to have some monitoring for that. There were times when there were just SO many people in the pool. The swim up bar was nice, but always packed. One pool volleyball game must've had 15+ people per side. It was dangerous and NOT fun. I asked for a volleyball net at the lower pool one morning (I offered to set it up) and was told no. Another guy went a few minutes after me and asked and was told yes. Beach- We were able to get chairs on the beach (one day we had an umbrella too). The sand on the beach was WONDERFUL! We've traveled the Caribbean 3x now and amongst St. Maarten, Dominican Republic, and Cancún, the sand at GR Solaris was the best. Unfortunately, there was a LOT of kelp in the water, so swimming in the ocean was not very pleasant. We wanted to do a LOT of this on our trip, but it was just not tolerable. We arrived Tuesday and saw beach volleyball (a fav of ours) for the first time on Friday. Yay that we got it, but bummer that we didn't get more of it. Food- The food was fine. It wasn't fancy and it wasn't terrible. The buffets had more than enough choice for everyone to find something they liked. We LOVE the omelette and yogurt stations. There weren't any desserts that I liked at any of the restaurants (buffet or specialty) any of the days. We really liked Marco Polo for Italian and for American night. We went to Zai also. Other guests didn't like it, but it was fine for us. The sushi wasn't all that great, but overall, it was good. Bars- I LOVED having a large visual menu of the drinks! We probably tried more things because we knew what we were getting. I also liked that there were MANY kids drinks to choose from. The drinks weren't too sweet and not too watered down. It was great. Tipping- Even though the trip was all inclusive, everyone works for tips. We probably spent $20-$30/day tipping. We got good service, but it cost us quite a bit. Entertainment- I was pleased with the entertainment offered. I didn't like the lip-syncing shows, but the choreography was well-executed. Many waiters passed us during the shows without asking if we needed anything, so after about 30 minutes, I went to lobby bar to get waters for us.

Not as good as I thought to be.

I has never seen a room without power outlet to charge my phone and I had to pay for wi-fi. There was no tooth paste provided and a small toothpaste cost me $10.00. The good side was that staff at the hotel were very courteous and hardworking.

Cancun Get-Away

Our trip was to Cancun, Mexico, and we stayed at the GR Solaris for 3 nights. It was very nice! It was ALL Inclusive! We are planning to return and go to the new Solaris Resort! Next time we would like to stay longer! Having been to Mexico on a Cruise Ship we were unsure of what this visit would be like and were very pleased with the resort, activities, accommodations, and price for the trip. The only thing that I would like to see improve would be the dining choices. Reservations are required for night dining at the restaurants and the attire is more formal than we like because we generally live in sandals, shorts, and T-Shirts. Overall, I recommend booking this vacation with Cheap Caribbean!

What's to Love

All rooms have balconies with breathtaking, soul-stirring views of either Nichupte Lagoon or the azure/teal waters of the Caribbean. Some even have open air jetted tubs.

Unlimited adult beverages. (Yes, you read that right). And bartenders who will mix up whatever you can think of. So get creative!

On Sunday night, show off your singing skills at Karaoke Night in the lobby - come on, you have a song you love sing.

You can keep your rockin' bod in shape at the Fitness Center, then chill at the Spa with a stress-smashing massage.

What We'd Change

Cancun is a busy place, but that's what you're here for - good times, the beach, pools, and sunny weather.

Why You Should Go

Located in the heart of Cancun - you'll land and be sittin' pretty beachside in no time at all.

Late-night munchies can be satisfied by the Deli, open from 4 pm to 6 am.

Try the mud wrap at the resort's spa - it'll really brighten up your sun-drenched skin

For you athletes, there's tennis and beach volleyball. (Let's see those guns).

You can enjoy a romantic dinner on the beach for two and listen to the purr of the ocean. (Swoon).

A hot spot for the kiddos - a Mini Club with shallow pools, activities, video games like Nintendo, Wii and Xbox 360. Gotta keep those young ones (teens included) happy and melt-down free!
