Great vacation!
A great getaway for my wife and I. Beautiful resort. Service was outstanding! Rooms were comfortable and clean, would definitely recommend upgrading to an ocean view room, beautiful view of the Pacific. Pools were very clean and comfortable. Incredible beach, you can walk for miles. Water is shallow with very few rocks, perfect for playing in the waves. Beach and pool service was very good. Martin at the pool bar was outstanding-great drinks and very friendly! Food was decent. Buffet was good, ala carts were so so. (There was a little seafood place next door called the Allawa-great shrimp and very reasonable.) Overall Great service and Very clean. We loved it!
Working with the reps at CheapCaribbean was a breeze. Kudos to all we spoke to, especially Lance and Troy.
The resort at El Cid Castilla met our fun in the sun expectations (altho it was rather loud due to all the pool activities) but we were quite disappointed with the dining experiences we had. Reservations at the a la carte restaurants required making phone calls each day and were often unavailable to us when we called. This forced us to eat at La Cascada Mexican twice. The first time was just mediocre/ok but the second time it was literally inedible and we had to send the food back and leave. We would rate the food at La Cascada one star or less. Strongly recommend avoiding La Cascada Mexican dining until a new chef can be appointed.
Despite being disappointed with the food at the resort, the bread and pasties made by the onsite Panaderia were excellent, as was the service everywhere.
Staff were really friendly and the pool area is great.
The beds were not very comfortable though and there was work being done very early in the morning under our room. Shower was cold on several occasions. They charge you for water and coffee in your room?!?!
Food in the large buffet was the same thing every day. I would suggest trying the other places and making reservations for your dinners. The food everywhere else was good.
The pool was warm and my son had a blast. He barely ever got out of the pool in the 5 days we were there. We also met a lot of great people and ultimately had a good time.
Well worth the money spent!
I'm all for saving money on a vacation, but this wasn't worth it. Staff wasn't very welcoming, even with tipping. Our room was musty and the floors were dirty. Water and coffee is NOT included with your room. It states a donation on the bottles in our room, but upon checkout I was confronted with a charge for water in my room. We did not use them. Advice for future travelers, grab bottles of water from the pool bars to stock up on in your room. Food is so-so and mostly buffet. The poolside outdoor restaurants/bars/snack shacks are not included with "all inclusive" when it comes to food. Not exactly an all-inclusive plan if I have to pay to make coffee in my room, drink the bottles of water in my room or pay for lunch by the pool.

What's the best and cheapest way of transportantion between the hotel and airport?10 answers
5 years, 63 months ago
Sindy
We do not offer transfers in the area. You may be able to do an online search for local transfer companies in the area.
KristenCC
Cheapest way we found was by using a shared transfer from a local tour company. You can find several online.
bvlincoln
Ignore the time share people and walk straight outside to the cab line. Cab is $31 USD one way and ride is about 25-30 minutes. Cab drivers are friendly and helpful with luggage. Will drop you off at front door when arriving and bellman will call a cab when you leave.
Ritt
Taxi was $31 USD
KarenAnne
I'm not sure. We rented a car. I know the area and it was easier but you may take an airport taxi, might not be too cheap though...
Paloma
Cheapest is the shuttle for 10$ US dollars. If you have 3 or more people the taxi is cheapest. About 30 minutes and 31$ US dollars can fit 4 people. If you want to do the timeshare you can ask to get free taxi and massages.
Bibij7
By cab, but you can attend a time share event and get a voucher for a free cab ride back to the hotel.
CaliLuv
We used King David Tours. I believe it was only around $35 for 2 of us round trip! I would shop around and look at prices online before going (Mazatlan tours is also a solid choice). Good luck!
Midwesterner1
We used King David. You can reserve online and they are a great price!

Does the package price include gratuity?10 answers
5 years, 63 months ago
San Mateo, CA
The all inclusive package includes taxes and gratuities in the pricing.
CaitlinCC
Ours included gratuity for most services BUT they definitely like you to tip them as you go as well. A bit of a shock from most all-inclusives we have stayed in but we tipped as we felt we received over and above service.
bvlincoln
Gratuity is not included in price. We are tippers and the staff at El Cid will give you additional attention/service for tipping. Even $1 for bringing a drink or two really goes a long way with the staff. We were amongst the very few who tipped. Others guests still received nice service but you could tell the staff really went out of their way for those who tipped.
Ritt
No, does not include gratuity, but you are not required to tip. Of course service gets much better once you start tipping. I would tip occasionally, not every single time, just when i felt the service was exceptional. There are tip jars at the bars, and of course when you make reservations a the fancy restaurants, you should most likely leave a tip for the server.
vvvv
No.....but the service was so good, we enjoyed tipping
KarenAnne
No. It does not include gratuity. Giving the waiters gratuity got us even faster and more personal service. We were glad to give it every single time we ate or drank something.
Paloma
No, you have to tip everywhere you go. I tip 20 peso (about 2$) every other time they bring me a drink. Dinners I tip 5-10$ depending on the food and service. Pretty much the same as over here roughly 20%
Bibij7
No
CaliLuv
yes you are not obligated to tip I did when we did extra things at the resort if you are on the beach or even poolside and the waiters are keeping you happy it is ok and useful to push alittle something their way they will remember you just that much more

What are the bathrooms like?10 answers
Most specifically, are there bath/shower combos? Separate bath & shower or shower only? Thx so much.,, must have my 'tub time'
5 years, 63 months ago
Huntington Beach, ca
According to the room the description all rooms offer a shower/bath combo. However this is not always guaranteed as it depends on availably.
CaitlinCC
Bath/shower combo in our room. Also, there was only one sink which is OK but we always prefer two.
bvlincoln
We've experienced better bathrooms in other resorts but this was fairly consistent with what we've seen in Mexico. It was nice that the shower/tub and toilet are in a separate room from the sink. The shower and bath are combined. The tubs are square and spacious. There are separate nobs for the shower water temps and bathtub water temps (total of 4 nobs in shower).
Ritt
Tub/shower combo & their pretty spacious as well.
vvvv
Our room had a bath/shower combo. It was rounded in shape, but efficient.
CatSue
Our bathroom was a tub/shower combo
KarenAnne
bath and shower together, bathtub large enough for submerging one full person, or two in the shower. modern style bathroom. sink and mirror was located outside the bathroom...
Paloma
Bathrooms are nice and clean. The water fixture is kind of odd, makes a lot of noice. Separate toilet and tub. Just like the states but very small and no lighting.
Bibij7
Bath/shower combos...I love the round tub!
CaliLuv
It depends on the room. Our family had 3 rooms and one had a bath shower combo, the rest just a shower. I would just ask for a bath, they are very accommodating!

How far is shopping from resort and what is the cheapest way to get to hotel from airport?11 answers
How far is shopping?
5 years, 63 months ago
Duncan, Oklahoma
Shopping is in the nearby area. We do offer round trip airport transfers for an additional cost. For more information and pricing please call us at 1-800-915-2322.
CaitlinCC
Shopping is all around from 1 block to up to a few miles away. You will have plenty in walking distance. The cheapest we found was a shared transport van from Vista Tours.
bvlincoln
Shopping is available within steps outside of resort. When facing street with back to resort, there are stores within the first two blocks to your right. Cheapest way from airport to hotel is a cab for $31 USD and ride is approximately 25-30 minutes.
Ritt
There is shopping right outside the resort, at the resort and on the beach... for little trickets and such.
We just took a van (there was 6 of us) to the resort.... it was $60. We figured this was the quickest way to get there. We didn't want to take a shuttle and get stuck with other people and dropping off at other resort... we didn't want to save a few bucks when we could have been sitting on the beach.
Darcyann
There are little shops actually located inside of the hotel, so you have shopping fairly close to you. El Cid Castilla is on a very popular street, just walk a couple of minutes and you'll find souvenir shops all along the way. If you want to travel to El Mercado, that is about 15 minutes away on transportation, but i think they sell pretty much everything you can find near the hotel.
We took a taxi from the airport to the hotel for $30.00 dollars. I think that's the only option for transportation from airport.
vvvv
Depends on what kind of shopping you want to do, there are stores in the hotel and in easy walking distance. We paid about $31 to get to the hotel from the airport in a taxi.
SaMi19
Shopping within the resort and right outside.....taxi $31 USD
KarenAnne
shopping located at the resort and right outside of it...
cheapest transportation, rent a car...
Paloma
There is no shopping lol. There is a mall about 15 minutes away. There's nothing there. And then there's old town marketplace about 15 minute 5$ cart ride. There's not much there neither and not that cheap. Mainly fabric stores. There is a night market thing at the hotel it self on the weekends, the pricing is about the same as going anywhere
Bibij7
15 mins away from the resort to shopping. The cab was the cheapest way to get to the hotel.
CaliLuv
Airport Transfer: We used King David Tours. I believe it was only around $35 for 2 of us round trip! I would shop around and look at prices online before going (Mazatlan tours is also a solid choice). Good luck!
Not sure so much about the shopping (there are quite a few vendors around and a couple little stores located beneath the hotel - one of those being a swimsuit shop). For more "formal" shopping options, I'm guessing a pulmonia (sic) "open air cab" could get you somewhere within 5 minutes.

Kids love the water slides in the pool, but it's the cascading waterfalls,
rock formations and tropical plants that charm parents. Widely regarded as
Mexico's largest, the infinity pool at El Cid Castilla Beach Hotel is just the
place to soak up the lavish warmth of Mazatlan's sun. While there, be sure to
quench your thirst with a lava flow or mai tai at the swim-up bar. If that's
not enough, you can check out the pools at the sister resorts!
One vacation won't be enough time to try everything at this beach hotel.
Mazatlan, the "Pearl of the Pacific," lays claim to some of the best sport
fishing in the Americas, and charter crews operate from the El Cid Marina Beach
Marina. Save a day or two for diving, snorkeling or simply sailing.
The resort's five restaurants provide plenty of choices, and the dinner show
at La Pergola is sure to intrigue. The distinctive mariachi blend of trumpet,
classical guitar and violin stirs the soul, even as whirling dancers in
traditional costumes mesmerize. Mexican Fiesta is just one of the shows offered
at the dinner theater. Each night is different, with Broadway musicals, like
Cats and Evita, as well as a Fantasy Show with black light special effects.
After an action-packed day, retreat to an Ocean View Room and spend time
enjoying the stunning pool and sea vistas from a private balcony. Lounge on the
couch in the living room, or rest comfortably on the plush bed. After all,
another day of adventure awaits.
