Low budget no frills- Motel 6ish

We arrived at the hotel at approximately 1030 and the public areas had the noise and atmosphere of a night club. We quickly learned that almost none of the staff spoke English but we were handed the key to our room and led up to our room. When I said “key to our room”, that’s exactly what it was, a real key, one key. The entrance door to our room had a flimsy lock that should easily have been pushed open and if it was, there didn’t appear to be any security cameras in the common hallway. It was funny because I woke up the next day and said, “i feel like I’m staying in a Motel 6” and my girlfriend said “I was just thinking the same thing”, which is not our idea of resort vacation. Most furniture and appliances in the room were low quality and functionally basic, like the faucets, lighting and beds. The sheets and towels were not soft and luxurious. We differed on what bothered us the most about the room; For me, it was the fact that the walk in stand up shower door opened up towards the knobs to turn on the water. Say what? Yes, in order to turn on the water, you had to get into the shower and close the door because the open door blocked the knobs that turned the water on and off. By the end of the vacation, I mastered the skill of only getting my right arm and shoulder soaked while turning on the shower. Additionally, the door mount was broken and the glass rubbed when you’d close the door similar to scratching your nails on a chalkboard. For her, it was the black mold growing on the bathroom ceiling and under the lip of the bathroom sink. I don’t think she was happy wearing wrinkled clothing either because there were no irons in the room. We asked for one a few times and were told housekeeping would deliver one but they never did. The beds, two surprisingly small double beds, were actually comfortable so we pushed them together to make a kingish size bed. The comfortable beds were essential to get some rest and not be kept up by the loud nightly poolside disco party 12 floors below our balcony. The food was decent, not an overly large selection but it was decent. The fruit was delicious and plentiful if you could fend off the large yellow eyed black birds which we learned on the hop-on/hop off bus originated in Africa. That was the only tour available from the hotel that offered English speaking. For dinner, you need reservations, which was never explained to us until we showed up for dinner without reservations. The off hotel dinner option wa good and the best meal we had there. Instead of taking the bus back, we stayed behind and took an Uber back. An Uber ride to/from the hotel and walled city was $1.80 US dollar. We had a similar experience with poolside towels, never being told we needed a special pass from the front desk and still feel bad about standing in the lobby dripping wet trying to figure out the towel pass system. We never used the beach because of the constant haranguing by the hagglers trying to sell whatever they have. All in all, we made the best of it, loved the walled city and had a great vacation. We’d definitely go back to the city but not to this hotel.
