catalonia better than reviews!

my granddaughter and I had a wonderful time at catalonia bayahibe, DR! when you read reviews, read the expectations of the writers. if they want everyone to speak English and have Hilton service, stay home! The Catalonia resort is a little dated but still well maintained. The beds were comfy and had flat screen tv and hotwater and cold air! We did not upgrade and were very satisfied, although slight smell of must. The food was great tho not much variety but I love mangu every morning and the coffee was the best! You don't have to sign up for restaurants and eat at any one for so many times of your stay. The rodeo had real Angus beef and was the best meat I've had in the DR. Orlando is verynice and goes out of his way to make sure there is great service. The animation team did an absolutely awesome job of getting everyoneinvolved in all the activities! I've never seen so many get involved! and so much to do all day long. and they also do all their own shows at night and then dancing afterward! They are amazing! I'd be dead by day 2! Can't remember everyone but Maximo,Santos, Celine, Genesys, Jessy, and the rest really do work 24/7! Very professional! We did a foam party! Don't need a disco when you have dancing every night! The pool was okay although could be bigger with a swim up bar. But the pool bar was great and always had mint for my mojitos. Had to deal with a few rude guests who seemed to not understand the concept of common courtesy! I think we were the the only once tipping anyone but the staff were very professional with all. The beach was awesome and although a lot of rocks, they have an area with hardly any and the water was beautiful! Went to Saona Island but was not a good day as it rained and we were cold and miserable. Went to La Romana, where the really poor live in dirt floor city homes. Don't like that the taxi's always take tourists to the same tourist trap store that they've taken them to for years..smell kickback? Definitely will be back. I love the Spanish Style Tiki Roofs and Palapas and the Coffee and Mangu and Merengue and Bachata!

Wonderful vacation

My husband and I recently returned from a week long stay at the Catalonia La Romana. We had a wonderful time! The grounds are immaculate, rooms are clean (maid service kept it clean all week), and the staff is very friendly. We were well pleased with the food. Neither me nor my husband care for buffets, but the Catalonia buffet was really good. There were some items on it that did not look great, but that is the norm when dealing with mass produced food. The ala carte restaurants were also good, with our favorites being the steak house and the tapas restaurant. The resort is very family friendly and not once did we see an obnoxious, drunk guest. However, there were LOTS of thong bikinis so be prepared if you are traveling with youngsters. The nightly shows were outdated and not worth staying up for. In order to get lounge chairs with a decent view I had to walk to the beach and reserve them at 6:30 each morning. That was aggravating. Most of the staff speaks Spanish but they know enough English to communicate. We were very pleased with the Catalonia La Romana and would not hesitate to return.

Fantastic value and excellent service

Beautiful and cared for resort. Not the newest but the workers service it well on a daily. If you expect a 5 Star child free stay - there is adults only right next door. Looked much newer and it’s the same Catalonia family. Water - not as calm as I’m used to on a coast of La Romana - the waves are pretty strong. The step from the sand to the ocean is steep but the 5’5” person can walk on the bottom for a long time before a very deep water. Lovely cleaning crew (Juana is just a treasure); lovely room service; reception desk staff; bar crew at Merenguero. Bunch of awesome people all around the resort. I never expect much more than I paid for and this resort was a great value and I was more than happy eating everyday at the Taino! Thank you for providing Dominican food - yuca para siempre.

My Stay

I will begin with the good, the staff was friendly and the beach was amazing. Yuca was by far their best restaurant with the Terrace being second. The Crepe station was good as well. Now for the bad, the resort says La Romana, that's not accurate, it is located in Bayhibe about 15-20 minutes away from La Romana. If your expecting quick service think again, nothing is quick. For example: My rooms AC was leaking all week long and it was finally fixed the night before we left, not one offer to switch rooms....Oh yea and I paid an extra $200 for an upgrade...Bright side to that my money was refunded but I had to argue for it...The all you can eat buffet was crap tasting food, the Italian restaurant reminded me of canned pasta, the house wine was disgusting with the red wine tasting like vinegar and the white wine like water. The steak house steak was good the rest of the food terrible. Also, i enjoyed watching them fill beer glasses with water first then beer...unbelievable!!!! If you want to see the shows picture the worst cruise line show you have seen times about 10...Also, the pool was dirty, it badly needs to be resurfaced and I left the pool in hives....DOn't know why but it happened to me twice and I have a pool at home where that had never happened. Last but not least, they hunt you down to try and sell you on their vacation club....Highly expensive...there is no negotiations its their price and nothing less. They promised us 2 free massages for listening to the sales pitch and then later gave us 30% off of their cheesy stores...
