Disappointing compared to Breathless in Punta Cana

Breathless Riviera Cancun was OK, but disappointing, compared to Breathless in Punta Cana. We expected our experience to be similar to Punta Cana, but the resort was smaller, the food was not nearly as good, and they did not have much for pool entertainment. In Punta Cana you could play water volleyball all day long but here they only set the net up for one hour each afternoon. There were also no foam parties like they advertise at Riviera Cancún. Unless you were an Xhale club member, there were no restaurant options to sit down and order breakfast. Our only breakfast option was buffet or room service. If we had gone to this Breathless first, maybe it wouldn’t have seen so bad. It just didn’t live up to our expectations.

    Exhale Upgrade Not Worth It

I want to preface this by saying the resort staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. Also, due to a polar vortex, much of North America is experiencing below average temps. So Mexico was unreasonably cooler during our stay than normal. This is understandable, but did put a damper on our days a bit. It maybe hit 27C max. I went to this resort in 2020 before Hyatt acquired the Breathless brand in 2022 and rebranded one section of the resort as Secrets. In 2020, the Exhale Club upgrade granted you the far left side of the resort with an exclusive pool and restaurant, and above all, calm and quiet away from the rest of the resort that was more party forward. I absolutely loved this because I could go enjoy the entertainment and energy, but retreat to the quiet Exhale members side at night. Fast forward to 2025 and I am planning my 2026 trip and want to go back to the same resort with the same Exhale Priviledge status. I didn't look at the resort's website because I knew what I wanted. So that's on me. Colour me upset when I found out I wasn't getting the quite oasis with party access that I so fondly rememebered. Had I known about the rebrand, I would have booked the Secrets side (which provides access to the Breathless resort). The "new" Exhale section of the resort is not worth your money. You get "exclusive access" to one side of the main pool with drink service, but it is not calm and quiet. Furthermore, my Exhale room was in building 5, so anything going on at Wink, was a big noise disturbance until 11pm. Again, no peace or quiet to escape to at the end of the day. Then, building 5 itself is an enormous echo chamber due to the hollow center to allow live trees to grow. Looks lovely; but other guests in the halls echos x 10 fold. I did not sleep at all the entire week I was there due to multiple instances of guests being rowdy, walking by, whatever, and it being amplified by the echo effect of the building. We heard the banshee wails of a bachelorette party on the 3rd floor. Horrible. The irony is that the party side of the resort by the Energy pool was dead quite in the evenings. Cannot speak to whether they experience echos in their buildings though. No option to change rooms or upgrade to the Secrets side as the resorts were both at capacity. Fine. But the capacity was felt. Food service and quality suffered. In lieu of losing the exclusive restaurant that was now on the Secrets side, Exhale members could eat at Bites in the morning. Well, that is all very good when you aren't waiting 30 minutes for your meal. Picante and Coquette were very good. The Grill was forgettable. We didn't try Spumante as many guests we spoke to got sick from eating there the night prior. Silk City was fine once our food finally arrived....Did not have a hot, let alone warm, shower all week. The weather just wasn't warm enough in the mornings to heat the water tanks. The complimentary shopping trip into Cancun was great! And spending the money on a couples massage was well worth it (as was the hot shower at the spa afterwards). I am overall very disappointed in the money I spent to not sleep for a week, not have a hot shower, and eat overall okay fare. It breaks my heart because I loved my experience prior to the rebrand, were I could go enjoy the party and retreat to the quite. Maybe I will consider returning at a less busy time (Apparently early Feb is busy???) and booking with Secrets for the peace I seek at night.

    Food poisoning and check-in scam

Leaving this review as a warning for anyone considering this resort. I traveled in a group of 20 for a bachelorette party, and of the 20, 8 got SEVERE food poisoning, and just about everyone else had extended periods of nausea. If you read no further, let this be your warning. 1. Food: based on reviews, expectations for food were pretty low, but the food was quite bad and just overall felt very unhealthy. Everything was super greasy and salty and processed. We went to the buffet one night and everything was lukewarm, which we think contributed to the food poisoning. For large group dinners they claim you don’t need a dinner reservation, but when you go to actually book a dinner and you want your group to eat at the same time (still at different tables), they make you spend $300 on wine to make the reservation. Otherwise they tell you there’s a 45 min+ wait to eat, unless you go at like 5pm. 2. Check-in/check-out: literally the worst experience I’ve ever had. Two of our rooms had 3 people in each room, and when we arrived, they claimed they had no record of this, even though I showed them receipts/confirmations for the three people. To remedy the fact that their information was wrong, we had to pay an extra $250 because they refused to accept my confirmations as valid. My travel agent had to spent hours on the phone with their sales team to get this fixed and get the extra charge refunded. Without my travel agent they would have definitely kept my money, there was no way to win this. This also made the check-in process take over an hour for our group. They also charged me an extra $310 for no reason when the rooms were booked that my agent had to personally reimburse me, and they charged another girl an extra $300 because she was joining a room as a third person a day later than the room started, but they claimed for her to be in the room at all she needed to pay for every night of the room, even though their payment is based on occupancy and not the room itself. Basically, unless you book through an agent you already have a strong working relationship with, this resort will shake you down for hundreds of extra dollars. Check out was also bad, where they wouldn’t let us leave the resort until you provide a slip from the front desk, and when there was an issue with our slip due to the issues with our reservation, they held us up and physically wouldn’t let us leave until it was resolved. This risked us being late for our flight and was truly insane. 3. Half of the pool was pretty gross, with lots of trash/dirt/plant material floating in it. And the hot tub is super murky/yellow. 4. Our room smelled REALLY bad from day 1, I suspect there is mold/mildew in the vents. Positives: the employees were generally very kind and helpful (other than check-in/check-out people), and the resort definitely has a party-forward atmosphere which is fun for large groups.

    Not very Good

Rooms were so so, food was very plain & boring. Nothing special about the place. Not enough deck chairs at the beach or the pool. One and done at this place.
