Fantastic beach, with snorkelling. Beautiful grounds. Clean

Stunning resort, the grounds and the architecture are very beautiful. Clean resort the food was about a four out of five, but there was always something great to have. The à la carts were delicious. The beach is a focal point if you’re into snorkeling, you don’t even have to leave the resort or go on a tour you can snorkel with turtles and their natural habitat right off the shore of the resort. We saw a few stingrays as well and a lot of interesting wild. I would return to this place

    First time AI with teens

Traveled with family (kids 14/16) in February and stayed at colonial. Was feeling apprehensive after reading some negative reviews so thought I would post about our experience: Pros: Resort is beautiful and felt very safe. The grounds, beach and pool areas are well maintained and beautifully taken care of by hard working staff. Loved being able to snorkel off the beach and see variety of fish and even swim with turtles. Rooms were clean and fine but could use a refresh. Being beside the ocean there was evidence of more wear and tear. Eg metal coat hangers were rusty, things get damp etc. this didn’t affect our stay. We preferred the architecture of colonial to other resorts. Again staff were fabulous and out maintaining and cleaning constantly. Cons: we struggled with food quality. We always found something to eat and didn’t go hungry but if you’re a foodie or picky this probably isn’t the place for you. It was our first AI so I’m not sure how it compares to others. We Didn’t enjoy the “cafeteria vibes” of the buffet and didn’t find the experience relaxing. With that said the staff were very hospitable and provided great service. We were able to get à la carte easily but our meal times were late 9-9:30 (we’re on west coast time so it worked for us). Food at à la carte was much better . Loved the blue cheese steak at La Funenta. Beds are small (2 doubles not queens). Sofa bed was fine for younger teen but not the most comfortable. Getting pool/beach chairs was an adventure and you need to be up early (6-7am) if you have a larger group or want specific location. No smoking rules are not enforced and we found ourselves stuck next to chan smokers one day with limited options to move to other chairs. People also smoke on their balconies. If this offends you then this might not be the resort for you. Tips: there are small outdoor seating areas at each buffet which are much quieter and peaceful for morning breakfast (or any meal). My family enjoyed lunch at Captain Morgans on the Caribe/Beach side (was worth the short walk). Caribe and Beach side of the resort smelled a bit like sewage down by the beach/ocean front at certain times of day. This side of the resort also appeared busier and more “party”… a lot of Spanish students. Colonial had quieter vibes while still having the benefit of more lively pool at adjoining Tropical. Would I stay here again? Probably not, but not because of the resort but rather that we figured our AI is not our jam. If you have younger kids it’s probably an amazing easy vacation for some fun in the sun.

    Amazing experience!

Barry colonial was a game changer for our vacation! They took such good care of our daughter on our trip! Susana overdo, Zaira huitzil, and Sara Martinez were incredible with our kid!

    Disappointed. Frustrated. Not again.

If you like waking up at 6am every day on vacation to get a pool chair, or waiting in long unorganized buffet lines for subpar food then this is the perfect resort for you. If you like spending an hour of your day most days with the concierge trying to secure a dinner reservation at one of the al carte restaurants then this is the resort for you. If you love a damp room, with damp bedding and clothing, absolutely the resort for you. Even with Damp Rid, our room, clothing and bedding always felt wet. And yes, we know it’s the tropics and it’s humid, but never experienced this level of moisture in the room. I’d like warm drinks in your mini bar this is the resort for you. Our room refg did not work and had to be changed. We have been to several all inclusive resorts and never have we been so disappointed. On the positive side, the grounds are beautifully maintained, the evening shows are great, the pool side entertainment was decent and the staff was helpful when needed. Oh and check your bill carefully…prices for connecting room and upgraded premium bracelet not as we were quoted.
