Luis can only do so much

Weather was abysmal (not their fault at all), but they didn't adapt well, we came because we were told about the events and food, when the events happened, Papi/Meciel, David, the other guy with long hair, and the younger girl, did their best, but they were only able to do anything the one day. Otherwise the events didnt really happen. The bartender Luis is amazing, the guy was exceptional, otherwise, my female partner was often ignored if I was not with her, which was very disappointing (this happened several times, she would be almost ignored if she was alone). The food was surprisingly bad, often we left plates unfinished if they were even touched, I hate to say it, but their steakhouse was probably the worst steak I have ever had. The spa prices were pretty steep, gift shop was outrageous (50usd for a small sunscreen?), our app didn't work for the first 4 days we were here, which sucked as everything is geared towards the app for reserving and planning, and the tablet in our room she had to do a hard reset on because it wouldn't load properly. We also had to call to ask for the bag that was supposed to be in our room (after buying a $50 small bag because we didnt receive one).

    Waiting list ….

Loved our experience at Secrets. The one thing that has to change is the damn waiting list every night in all restos when there is always 5 or 6 tables that are free

Long but includes practice examples from our trip

This is a long review but stick with it because it has a lot of real-world experiences with staying at our resort. We stayed at Secrets/Breathless Rivera Cancun for our honeymoon for a week, a Sunday- Sunday in May. We were excited because we heard good things about Secrets and how beautiful Cancun is. Our experience left us extremely disappointed and with no desire to return for a future stay at any Hyatt-owned property. On our first day at check-in, they offered for their vacation club to go to their sales pitch at another resort, and stated it would be approx. 90 minutes and we would receive $200 in coupons to use for things like massages at the spa, coupled with a coupon to make it $50 for a couples massage. The stipulation was that we HAD to book it then and there at check-in. We decided to go ahead and book it for Tuesday morning. We arrived at the other resort around 9:30am. We ended up being a little interested, but for our financial situation, we felt it wasn’t quite the right time to do so. We explained that to them and they proceeded to continue to send guy after guy with a different deal each time to try to convince us. Lo and behold that 90-minute pitch that they quoted us for ended up turning into a six-hour ordeal where we lost out on more than half a day's worth of time in the sun and resort activities. When we spoke with the preferred club concierge to ask for any sort of compensation for our time lost, they continued to state its policy to not provide any compensation and ultimately, all we walked away with was the $200 coupon and lost half a day. This brings me to our next poor experience. When we attempted to book with the spa or couples massage, using the $200 certificate and the resort coupon to make it $50 total, the spa stated that no coupons or certificates could be used on the massage. When I went to the preferred concierge, they stated they could not be used at the spa because that price was already a discount ($350). I repeated it was their staff that told us this deal, to get us to go to the UVC pitch. I asked for a manager and, long story short, two more managers later, they honored this and called the spa. Back to check-in, our room was equipped with a sensor on the balcony door to shut off AC when the door was open. This system was extremely glitchy and worked half the time. Throughout our stay, more than once, we would come back to our room hot and humid and everything dripping in water. Every time we called maintenance they just told us we weren’t locking and closing the door all the way, even though we explained to them, we checked it every time. At check-in, there was also a terrible smell of mildew in the room, assuming from the humidity, which we have not experienced in other rooms or resorts. There was also a gaping hole where the entire window pane was not connected to the wall, when we pointed it out, the guy just pushed it back into place. Overall, the room was poor to average quality. The rooms come equipped with an in-room, iPad, and when you stay at a Hyatt inclusive, there is an app you download to get all of the resort activities and times, which is also available on the iPad. Our entire stay we were having trouble actually getting into restaurants or show events on time or on days that they are even open because the inclusive app they have you download, the iPad, and the podium at the individual restaurants all state different open and closed days and different open hours. We fully missed out on some shows and a restaurant people really like, because of this inaccuracy and discrepancy. An extremely frustrating experience. Finally, and most crucially, Mexico was hosting its presidential election that second Sunday at the end of our stay. Guests at the resort woke up to find out that alcohol is not permitted to be sold or given out that Saturday and Sunday, except for one single location on the whole resort property. Naturally, we and every guest we spoke with, were very upset, not because of this law, but because Hyatt’s/Secrets/Breathless did not post on their website or notify guests before or at check-in, that alcohol would be very limited availability. We even booked through a travel agency owned by Hyatt who should have told us of this law and the situation that would occur if we booked during this time. Again, I and other guests went to the preferred concierge to discuss with them how upsetting it is to be paying for alcohol every day, which is the second most expensive thing on a bill after the room, and have it severely limited in availability the way it was. Essentially paying for a product and service, and not receiving it. Again, it was available at the main pool and restaurant of Breathless, but if you don’t know, Secrets attracts a certain type of guest that wants a relaxed vacation setting, and Breathless intentionally creates an atmosphere for people who like to party with loud music, things happening all around you and excitement. To ask guests, especially more relaxed secrets guests, to get their alcohol from only one source where the entire resort is conceivably packed into one buffet area, is unfair to how they prefer to vacation. After all this, the concierge manager again quoted policy, policy, policy to not provide compensation for issues and experiences. Overall, this stay has not made my wife and I want to experience a Hyatt-owned all-inclusive again. This being our first time with a Hyatt-owned property, what we learned was that Hyatt does not care about the money people spend on a vacation, no matter how many thousands of dollars. Hyatt does not truly care about the. experience you have at their resorts and retaining vacationers for a lifetime. The kicker here is, that we were close to ultimately joining their vacation club when at the sales pitch that Tuesday, but we feel we dodged a bullet being in a long-term commitment to this brand.

    Fun with friends

I enjoyed this property. The beach was not as nice as I had hoped but the resort pools and awesome food made up for it!
