An OK Hotel in a Good Location!

Stayed a couple of nights at Bunker Hill after a recent sailing adventure. It's a OK place, value for the money, but you should be forewarned about THE STAIRS! No elevator in the building, so you have to haul all your luggage up to your room... for us that was 3 flights of stairs with 100+ lbs of luggage. We did it in stages, with rest in between trips! LOL The view from our room was OK also, St. Thomas Bay in the distance, and lots of rooftops around the hotel. The room itself was old and dated. The bed was comfortable enough. The bathroom was adequate, although the window had wads of toilet paper stuffed all around to keep wind/water out I assume. It was obvious that many guests had participated in the window packing ritual. On the positive side, the front desk staff, as well as the staff serving breakfast were super nice. The free breakfast was adequate, eggs, bacon, toast and coffee, easy enough. The little breakfast area was cute, and actually had it own little pool. Not sure what that was all about. The location is good: the hotel is also very close to the downtown shopping area; and, the French Town area is only a short walk. We felt safe walking around the area at night. Bunker Hill is an OK hotel especially for folks on a budget. For our dollar, we plan to upgrade to a bit nicer location on our next visit to St. Thomas.

Beware of what is not being said!

Hotel is not as it seems and I always give the benefit of the doubt. 1st-the outside of this hotel is quite run down- not a pretty neighborhood but location to the waterfront and restaurants/main st is easy 5min walk so great location. 2nd- hotel staff were fantastic friendly and courteous. 3rd- Various damage in room- chair was soaked with some liquid-could not use-stained badly and smelled. Pillow covers reeked like old old body odor so clearly not washed. Door Jamb damaged - ceiling had water stains-iron board but no iron?-light in bathroom hanging on by wire- shower dials did not adjust or turn off-appeared they fixed by putting hand valve to turn on off. air conditioning good but EXTREMELY loud. 4th- 2 pools were exactly 8feet x6feet in size, no water recirculation and not cleaned. 1 pool located IN the restaurant (yup) so you had to walk around the pool (4ft wide walkway) to get to a table for breakfast- restaurants are NOT open for lunch as advertised but ONLY dinner at 5pm- don't expect to wait for your room in the restaurant/bar before that time. NOTE- this hotel has 3 floors-no elevator and not suitable for anyone who is less than average physical shape. You must carry your suitcases and personal items up 3 narrow stairways if you are on top floor.

Would stay again for a one night layover.

Friendly front desk clerk but the hotel itself needs a lot of tlc. Parking could be a nightmare, we got lucky getting 1 of 2 spots that the hotel reserves for guest. The free breakfast was good and the wait staff was nice but we left a little hungry.

Great area, nice people, but a few issues

My wife and I took a wonderful trip to scenic St. Thomas at the end of January to get away from the Midwest cold. The hotel is located downtown and in walking distance to the downtown area and both cruise terminals (if you like to walk a lot like we do). The hotel is built into the side of a hill and there are MANY steps. The Bunker Hill is older so we didn't expect a 5-star hotel, but a few things happened that we wanted to share with future travelers thinking about staying there. First of all, the beds are super-comfortable, the free sit-down breakfast was unexpected and delicious, the pool area is nice after a long day, and the on-site restaurant is a good option if you don't feel like venturing out for dinner. Check-in was smooth and couldn't have gone any better. Our room, #24, was ready when we arrived. We chose a cheaper room - it is nothing to write home about (but comfortable enough) and next to the breakfast kitchen, which means we could hear people talking and pans clanging at 7:15 each morning. Again, not the worst thing. On our third night there, I heard drops of water hitting the other pillow in my bed throughout the night - maybe one drop every minute or two. The next morning, I checked it out and had no idea where the water was coming from. Then I noticed the a/c was dripping water down the wall and running under my bed and to the floor between the beds. I talked to the front desk receptionist and she said they would take care of the issues by the time we returned later that day. Needless to say, they put a "band-aid" on the problem and simply put towels on the floor by the wall. They didn't tell us why the ceiling was leaking. We asked to be moved to a different room. They moved us into a much better room (#52) that had 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchenette and a living room. The problem is that neither of the 2 TVs worked. At least I couldn't get them to work. On the first night I called the receptionist and she was no help. The second night we ran into the maintenance guy and told him about the problem. He said he had to check on something first and would be right back. He never came back, so we didn't have functioning TVs for the last 2 nights. IMHO, I think since Bunker Hill is an older hotel, it has issues that get reported, but the issues are never resolved. At least that was our experience.
