Beautiful grounds, but musty rooms and mid food kept it from being great
We enjoyed our stay at Dreams Onyx, but for a highly rated all-inclusive resort—especially as Preferred Club guests—I expected a bit more. Check-in was clunky. We arrived early (our fault), but the holding area was decent with a bar and snacks. Once in the room, though, the mildew smell hit hard. It lingered the entire stay, and even my clothes smelled like it back in the States. The room felt damp and not particularly clean—I'd rate housekeeping a 6/10 at best. The resort itself is gorgeous. Landscaping and pool maintenance are top-notch—seriously, the grounds crew deserves a raise. The food? Meh. A lot of ham, undercooked chicken, and overall just not very impressive. The buffet gave more flexibility, but some meals felt risky. Drinks are pushed constantly, especially at the Preferred Club pool. Staff are friendly but tip culture is heavy—you’ll feel like you should tip every interaction. It’s up to you, but just be aware. We appreciated the beach yoga and our time at the adults-only Breathless resort next door, which was a fun perk. Dreams itself isn’t adults-only, and while the kids are usually in specific areas, families with children are everywhere. One big flag: I got very sick the second-to-last day, and I’m not the only one. Several reviews mentioned this, so it might not be a coincidence. All in all, 3 stars. Beautiful property, friendly staff, but the room issues, mediocre food, and cleanliness kept it from being great.

Forever memories made you can’t go wrong with staying at dream onyx
This staff worked so hard .. truly amazing.. in a short time they learned who we were and drink and food preferences Of course the beach was not useable and we are big beach people but we were not going to let that stand in the way of all of the memories we made, and we did do two excursions to Sonoa beach that were absolutely amazing

Recommend
Some of the best food we’ve had from the buffet to the steakhouse. Staff were exceptional. We had the Preferred option, as we didn’t travel with children and took full advantage of the adults only pool. You have the option to go to the adults only resort, Breathless, next door for their pools, restaurants, and shows which was a nice option.

PLEASE READ THIS TRUTHFUL REVIEW !!!
1st of all, I had been relying on this sites reviews when it came to my decision to choose this hotel for my 40th birthday with my 2 kids (6 &11 yrs) and my husband. Gosh I was extremely disappointed, I've learnt my lesson not to trust all reviews of others. Upon arrival at the hotel for a 5 star the reception was poor, no welcoming drinks, no information or anything given, might be because it was around 8 pm at night. The room I was given was no where near what's been advertise online, it was small, dirty with cobwebs, dust everywhere I felt stuck as I did not want to touch anything!!! The noise was on another level the air conditioned was so loud we could not put it on, the fridge was loud we could not sleep and the lift by the room was as if it was in our bathroom, constant talking and shouting. We were given a different room at a family section and this was better big improvement to what we were initially given. Service and cleanliness, EXTREMELY BAD !!!! lots of cracked & extremely dirty plates at all services, you really need to search hard for a decent plate, workers serving in stained dirty uniforms daily. Lots of food but tasteless and poor quality, and COLD most of the time. TIPS expected for everything even for saying Hello, most time without receiving any services. Good part - lazy river, sweets for the kids and mini bar service, the games arcade, ground was neat tidy and clean but everything else let it down. There's potential to this hotel but require a major revamp and staff training. N:B If you speak Spanish your experience will be much better, as we observed the service they receive was better. I will not be back good luck to everybody who books this hotel.
