July trip to Cozumel; The Good the Bad & the Ugly
First, the good. What's not good about Cozumel. The staff at Secrets were wonderful. Amid the concern of Covid 19, I could not have felt safer. The staff ALL wore masks & sometimes face shields as well. They never touched your eating utensils & they had someone in a hazmat suit fogging the chaise lounges & general areas at sunup each morning. Everyone was extremely courteous as well. Some of our favorite places were open such as Guidos, La Choza & Coconuts. We found a beautiful new restaurant with great food called Azul Madera. 2 lobster dishes & 4 margaritas came to $55. The bad: some of the restaurants were closed, the preferred club closed at 5 p.m. Really? The town is still mostly shut down & the people are suffering due to lack of business. The ugly: the resort is showing some age. Our first room got flooded. The second room they showed us was wet. The third was ok, but the TV never worked. They could use a facelift.
Another Great Stay at Secrets Aura
We just got home yesterday from another great stay at Secrets Aura. We don’t use even 1/10 of the amenities and services they offer, but what we do use and care about — Secrets delivers. The rooms are extremely clean, and the staff is most helpful and attentive. The food is delicious (you GOTTA try the breakfast chilaquiles rojas — I had it twice!), and the servers are attentive and quick. Regarding the pandemic — Secrets is certainly on their game. Everyone’s in masks, acrylic dividers are up at the desks, and around every corner at every hour, they’re cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing. For people who don’t want to wear masks — I only ask you to reconsider. The people of Cozumel are terrified that the island is going to go back into the “red” alert (no tourists) at any time, and they’ve already been devastated. They can only stay open and cater to tourists if we do our part. So please — be respectful as GUESTS in their country and do as they do — wear a mask whenever you’re not in your room (except when seated in a restaurant, eating or drinking). We loved it when someone stopped by our room to offer us complimentary beverages and snacks — what an unexpected surprise! Secrets Aura has one one of the best dive operators (Dive House) right there on-site, which was very helpful for us to schedule dives and get personalized service. The beach is really nice right outside — sandy, with a pier you can snorkel and swim around to see some cool fish. The beach is nice and relaxing, with land hammocks and even a couple that are dangling in the water — to stay cool WHILE you relax and sway gently back and forth. We really appreciated our stay and will most definitely return to Secrets Aura!
We decided, for our mental health, to travel during a pandemic and to prep, we read many reviews of the precautions that Secrets Aura were taking. I cannot say enough good things about their safety protocols! Every staff wore masks the entire time. They sanitized everything, including the pens and the seating area. They sanitized our luggage. There are areas with hand sanitizer throughout the resort. It went above and beyond and I felt truly safe. On top of that, the resort is beautiful. Most restaurants were open and we had good food throughout our visit. We had to change rooms right away. When we arrived, it had rained quite a bit and we believe that the room had flooded. The floor was soaked from one end to another. It did not take long, at all, to move rooms!! The rooms are good, beds comfortable... But our favorite spot was the beach. It is rocky and water shoes are completely necessary.. but it is beautiful. I have to praise Isabel, who took our daily drink orders at the beach. She was lovely, kind, funny, and attentive. I hope she gets the recognition that she deserves. I also want to praise Leo with the entertainment. We loved him, he was so sweet. The week was exactly what we needed to relax and we are grateful for Secrets Aura!
would go back again
visited July 22, 2020. the people/staff were extremely friendly. always helpful. the room was very clean and we had a great view. since they are only able to do 30% capacity right now, we were upgraded to a Preferred Superior Ocean View and it was perfect. they are very Covid Cautious and have sanitizer all over and make you use it when going in to all restaurants and bars. Everyday I saw cleaners in the pools and they raked the beach every morning. Towels were always available at every pool. It was easy to get drinks and the bartenders were wonderful. We used the activity guy that is in his little hut by the outside beach massage section and did a snorkel tour. it was a great time. We also went deep sea fishing and the chef at the hotel cooked it for our dinner. There is also some decent snorkling at the beach and under the pier there for beginners. it is a little rocky getting into the water but then smooths out. The movies on the beach at night were fun (bring mosquito spray) and the fire dancing and nightly bands were great also. For the food, everything was good except for the steak and desserts. the French restaurant was our favorite, I had the best salmon ever there, the sauce it came with was amazing. but the Creme Brulee was the only decent dessert. It is not by the city at all, so if you are wanting to spend time in town, this may not be the place unless you rent a car at the front desk. if you want a relaxing vacation and nice pools and beach, this is the place
My husband and I just got home yesterday from a very relaxing week at Secrets Aura Cozumel!!! I’m putting a few tips in all caps that we’re really helpful, just FYI. I’m putting this at the top because I know most won’t read all of this....Take plenty of ONES and FIVES with you for TIPS. We were there 7 days and took $150 for tips. It’s not required or expected from the staff and service is great regardless, but everyone works so hard and is so great that they really, really deserve it! The service we experienced from all the staff there was amazing and the resort is really going above and beyond to keep their guest safe. Every single staff person wore their mask continuously and properly, despite the heat and the fact that they were all working so hard. The gym is near the employee entrance and on his way there my husband saw people arriving for work, masks already on, and everyone having their temperature taken before entering the resort area. They are using a sign with a QR code that you scan with your phone (very easy, just open your camera as if you are going to take a picture and the link pops up) instead of physical menus. The added bonus of this is that you can view all the menus for all areas of the resort on your phone to help you decide where and what you want to eat beforehand. There are numerous other ways they showed that INSURING GUEST SAFETY was a TOP PRIORITY, too numerous to mention them all here. We booked the preferred club superior ocean view suite and it was beautiful, clean and very comfortable. Exactly as it appeared on their website. The view was perfect and the balcony was comfortable to sit on even during a short period of rain that we experienced. The food was good or great everywhere we ate within the resort. Buffet weren’t open yet, but there were plenty of options still available. I’m a picky eater and don’t like seafood at all (I basically have the palate of a toddler, I’m embarrassed to say), and I found something I liked at all the available restaurants. My husband is a little more adventurous than I am and tried a variety of things and really liked everything he ate. The beef steak (filet mignon) was amazing at BORDEAUX and we went back there a second time just to enjoy it again. If your a dessert person, you won’t be disappointed. There are several delicious options at all the restaurant and you can always find something yummy at COCO CAFE. They had different things available at different times, so check back later if you don’t like what you see the first time. They also have ice cream even though you don’t see it on display. Don’t be afraid of the iguana you see at the outdoor part of Oceana...he’s just trying to get a snack and won’t bother you! ; ) My only issue with the food in general was that they sometimes put things on your plate that’s not in the description (guacamole, beans, almonds, sauces). It’s really just a matter of personal preference since I am a picky eater, but it might be helpful in increasing guest satisfaction if they list all the things in the description so people know exactly what they are getting and can order accordingly. But again, overall great experience regarding the food. There were plenty of activities available to keep it interesting, especially in the evening. I loved that they had the option of watching a MOVIE, relaxing in a lounge chair, every evening on the beach! I heard the fire show was also very good and sadly we forgot about it, went to dinner too late that evening, and missed it. Beach and pool wait staff were friendly and quick with getting you your order. You can order drinks and food (from the barefoot grill) while at the beach and pool. We brought our 30oz RTIC CUPS and they would always fill them with whatever (coke and ice, water, cocktail) you asked for. We always held onto our LIDS/STRAWS when they’d take the cup to refill so they didn’t have to handle them or keep up with them, which worked out great. The added bonus of this is that it’s more environmentally friendly to the environment of the island. (plus the eco friendly states they offer are kind of terrible). Isabella was our favorite person to order from because she was so sweet and very funny, and even though she was wearing a mask the whole time, you could tell she was almost always smiling! The beach is beautiful and relaxing, but also pretty rocky in several areas, so you’ll really benefit from bringing a pair of WATER SHOES. We got some from Amazon for about ten bucks a pair and they were well with it. Bring SUNSCREEN and ALOE! There is 15spf available complimentary in the room, but you really need something stronger and it’s expensive in the gift shop ($30USD). Even if you don’t think you’ll need it, bring some aloe. We forgot ours and paid $20 for a small bottle in the gift shop. There are a ton of other toiletries available complimentary in room like shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, body lotion, toothpaste, toothbrush , razor, comb, sewing kit, and even bug spray. We are both pretty brand specific with our toiletries, so we did not take advantage of this perk, but it’s definitely nice in case you forget something. Be careful about your alcohol intake at the swim up bar because, for some reason, it will really sneak up on you there! I recommend adding a bottle of water between cocktails for safe measure! ; ) Lastly, if you need something or have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask someone. They really are all so friendly and helpful and want you to have an amazing vacation!
