Excellent daily water programs
Jairo did a great job leading engaging and fun daily water programs! Rooms were a bit dated. The food was good and A la carte restaurants were delicious. One of our party broke their arm climbing trees by the beach and a great medical center is very close. Staff was very helpful to individual with cast.
Our fourth trip to Puerto Plata was THE BEST!!!!
Everyone seems to be very busy dealing with the effects of this unexpected/unfortunate/terrible virus traveling across our entire world; however, I want to take a minute to recall the fun times and adventures we had on our recent vacation at the Sunscape Resort in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, and to give a shout-out to those who made our vacation extra special. We spent two weeks at Sunscape and in a one-word summary I would say our stay was “wonderful”!!! Our junior suite rooms were large, bright, cheery and VERY CLEAN! Our maid, Monica, was prompt, friendly and willing to provide us with an additional towel, etc., whenever we asked. When we would visit the private Sun Club Family bar/restaurant, staffed by Carlos “Happy, Happy!!”, Louis or Justin, we would get just what we wanted. We spent most days at the pool which was always clean with plenty of lounge chairs available for everyone. On those days when the sun wasn’t very visible and we were showered on several times, we were able to escape into the theater area for a little shelter. OR we would go to the swim-up bar where Oscar was ready to cheer us up with our beverage of choice*. He was always able to handle a large crowd or a few people very promptly and with a smile on his face. The same is true with Joe, the day bartender in the Rendezvous Lobby Bar. After Day 1, when I sat my drink mug on the bar, he knew what I wanted. (Or does that mean I had too many drinks?) Additional shout-outs go to Simon, a bellman at the Front Lobby, as well as Navidia (spelling?) at the Spa for a fantastic pedicure/massage. When it was time for a meal - be it breakfast, lunch or dinner - we usually found a large and tasty food variety. If we were grabbing a little appetizer in the Sun Club Adults Lobby or Sun Club Family Restaurant, the Windows Restaurant (evening buffet – server/waitress Julia was excellent), Da Mario Italian Restaurant (server/waitress Ceselia – who brought one of our companions a special “birthday” dessert), or a snack at the Tamarindo Snack Bar (the lunch bartender – Juliesa - was on top of everything!), we left feeling full and happy. The one bad experience we had was at the Gohan Asian Restaurant. To begin with, the sign at the front door said “Adults Only”. Shortly after we were seated a family with a very unruly child was seated right next to us. Perhaps we all were a little anxious/unhappy already (as it was taking some time for our waiter to take our order and then to bring us our beverages and food), when the little child next to us wouldn’t stop screaming. I finally asked the hostess at the door why there were children allowed in the restaurant when the sign said “adults only”. She snapped me and said “talk to the management!!” In my opinion that was not professional AT ALL – especially when the Sunscape brochure we received at check-in also describes the Gohan Asian Restaurant as “Adults only inside the restaurant”! After speaking with our friendly Amstar Customer Service representative, Jorge, we booked an excursion to attend the CARNIVALE Festival in Puerto Plata (through Runners Adventures) . We were picked up at the front lobby by Julio and Bomba (I think he was Morgan Freeman’s identical twin brother?) and escorted by them to various points of interest around Puerto Plata proper (with Julio telling us stories as well as providing a history of several places we walked to or drove by), sampled some chocolate and cerveza, browsed through a jewelry store, a pharmacy and several souvenir shops. We were then driven to a private seating area on one end of the Boulevard/Malecon where we enjoyed watching a parade of many different groups of people dressed in beautiful/amazing or very interesting costumes, as well as listening to some authentic Dominican music and entertainment. A wonderful time was had by all. Thanks, Julio and Bomba! We also rented a van one afternoon for a private trip to Sosua. Our “guide” and friend (Irma) took us to a wonderful beachside restaurant where we enjoyed watching the sunset and the cervezas, as well as a little shopping and finished the evening with an absolutely fantastic appetizer platter of various items such as shrimp, red snapper and lobster. Thank you, Booth 16, and our dear amiga, Irma. Hope to see you again soon!!!! Kathy R. (and David, Liz, Steve, Jo and Darcy) Madison, WI USA *My only complaint when it came to MY beverage of choice – Brugal Blanco – is that I often would not get what I ordered. On one occasion I ordered a cocktail from the waitress/server outside the Pizza Shop. I knew after one sip it was not what I ordered. I then went up to the server as she was standing at the counter and she told me it was definitely Brugal Blanco. I then asked the bartender himself to show me the Brugal Blanco bottle. He showed me another, differently labeled bottle of rum and said they were out of the Brugal Blanco. The server just said to me: “I’m tired and have had a long day.” When one is at an all-inclusive resort where Brugal Blanco is served (and since Brugal is bottled/distilled in the nearest town), I find it totally amazing that a resort would/should run of that liquor!
Ive visited the Dominican Republic a few times. We stayed at Sunscape for one week all inclusive. We had such a great time/experience. The beaches were so nice and relaxing, staff was so friendly, and great food. My friend and I really enjoyed dining at night. Melvin was THE BEST server! He really made our experience better with his friendly smile and great personality. I recommend staying at Sunscape 100% and will definitely be back!
My wife and I stayed for a week, the resort is small and older compared to some we have stayed at, which we really loved the size of the resort, everything from the beach, pool, and restaurants are right there, the rooms are clean and updated and very nice. Food and choices were good, two complaints about the restaurant, service was very slow in getting water and coffee and as trivial as it is the toaster needs updated, one toaster and by the time you get your toast your food is cold. Staff is very friendly, Oscar at the pool bar was great. My one complaint is I slipped and feel on the pool due to the water on the walk way and fell on my elbow and knee, the medical staff was right there to put band-aids on my elbow and Leonar contacted me the next day and was very concerned and had me fill out an accident report. I am still have soreness and pain in my knee and elbow I have appointments to have them examined, I would have thought somebody would have reached out to me once I got home.
Was expecting better
I like to start with the good stuff...the restaurants are very good as is the service. No reservations so first come first serve. They have a good pizza and calzone place but doesn’t open for lunch which is a shame. The bars serve good drinks, the staff is friendly. I liked their coffee shop...good staff too. The spa was very good, prices are high. Swim up bar bartender was awesome! Thanks Oscar! Now the not so good...the buffet is lacking in food and service. The only meals we ate were breakfast for this reason. Snack bar is very small and limited as well. The beds were uncomfortable and our maid was a ghost!! I always bring cleaning supplies so I used them myself. I filled my water up at the bar and used pool towels most of the week. The beach was terrible...dirty, broken chairs, no umbrellas...VENDORS EVERYWHERE. Within minutes of checking in were were descended upon by “vacation club employees” trying to sell us a membership. Relentless. Called my room twice, followed us around the resort. Makes a person uncomfortable. Wasn’t a bad vacation, but I would not return. The airport is ridiculous in Puerto Plata...hurry up and wait in multiple lines that lead to more lines. Happy travels!!
