Respectable hotel
Me and my partner stayed at sunscape coco for our first holiday in the Dominican Republic. We got a very good deal through BA. This was a relatively new hotel so we were optimistic but had been slightly put off with the odd bad review, but we thought we would just see for ourselves. Overall, the hotel is very pleasant with a welcoming lobby area with welcome drinks. However, the lobby area does not have AC and is extremely sweaty. We decided to upgrade to the adults only section of the hotel as this was mentioned upon checking in. We have always liked the idea of adults only so we thought we would upgrade. This was approx £400 per couple for the honeymoon suite room. If I’m being honest the perks are not justified by the price as you can just use the adults only section without upgrading so I think this needs to be monitored, there were also children in the adults only area on the odd occasion which is not acceptable. We did wait for about 45 minutes for our room to be ready and taken over with the luggage which was disappointing. Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the kaleidoscope restaurant was very good. All other restaurants were a good experience and food was pleasant. Ultimately we enjoyed our stay but would like to mention a few points that we think would be of importance for future guests and hotel staff. It appears that attention to detail within the rooms and parts of the hotel, restaurants etc could be improved. Just to add that classy finish. We noticed there were leaks in the rooms and dodgy paint work and just general maintenance throughout the hotel. Overall, I would recommend this hotel as it is very pleasant for the price and does give you that relaxing environment if you are away from the children.

4 days was enough
Overall, Sunscape Coco was a pleasant resort with plenty of areas to escape to if you wanted to avoid the main pool and beach. They had designated spaces for families and adults only, which was nice. I found the pools to be quite warm and not the cleanest, so we opted to spend more time at the beach. Our room was cleaned daily by a lovely housekeeper named Elba (I believe), who checked in each morning to see if we needed anything. However, the shower didn't drain well, and the air conditioning in our room wasn't as strong as I would have liked. Navigating the restaurants was a bit confusing at first until another guest mentioned an app we could download. Not all restaurants were open each day, so it was essential to check the app daily for availability. Fortunately, there was a nice variety of dining options, allowing us to try something different each night. I booked a spa service with two friends, and I was quite disappointed with my experience. While my friends seemed to enjoy their treatments, mine fell extremely short. We all opted for the after-sun aloe treatment, but after a 45-minute wait, I learned that another guest had extended their service. This information should have been communicated at check-in to save me the wait or allow me to reschedule. When I finally went into the treatment room, I noticed there was an accordion door (that didn’t close properly) with another guest on the other side. The esthetician had me get settled and comfortable on the bed and when she returned she had me sit up, being exposed, so she could place plastic underneath. This could have been something she had prepared. I was prepared that the aloe would be cold, but after she applied everything I was left covered with wet towels for 40 minutes and felt freezing. Once she returned, I was told to shower (on the side where the other guest was) and then given back one of those wet towels to dry off. I laid trembling on the bed while she applied lotion and completed the service. There was no treatment to this, the lotion application came with a sped up massage. I felt her rush for being late and in result I wasted $125US and 2.5 hours of time for a 50 minute service. The entertainment was good some nights, they had a show each night followed by an after party. The shows were entertaining enough, but the after party was done in the lobby area and not worth sticking around for. Most of the nights they had karaoke, which I am not a fan of. There was no disco or anywhere you could go and dance. Additionally, the music all day and evening was Latin music that none of us knew, which made it very hard to get into. All in all, 4 days 5 nights was just enough time to get away at this resort at this time of year.

10 days mid-end Sept
When we first arrived we walked into the reception expecting it to be a bit cooler whilst we checked in however there was no aircon in reception and we were extremely hot trying to check in. We then got our room number which was in the 16th block. A very friendly bell boy then took us and our luggage to our room which was a 8-10 minute walk away from the main reception. Upon arrival of our room we were amazed with the size, cleanliness and the overall view of our room. The first night came around and we were knackered due to an early flight here so got an early night. At 11:30pm we were rudely woken up by the fire alarm going off in our block. We quickly escorted out of the building to be told it was a false alarm. The second night came around and as we were getting ready to go out for dinner the fire alarm went off again another three times to be told “no worries”! The restaurants- there are 12 restaurants advertised however these aren’t open all the time. The restaurants are only open 2-3 times a week and aren’t open when they say the should be. The restaurants that we did manage to eat in the food was lovely. The only thing letting them down was the service by the waiters, this is very poor and extremely slow. One night we went to sunny side grill and waited over an hour for our food to come out to us and at this time left to go to another restaurant. The pool- the pool isn’t particularly clean and there was a couple of times that the pool had bugs and leaves in it. There were people cleaning the pool in the morning- one of which cleaned the side with ‘acid’. The pool also stained our bikini/swim shorts with bleach stains. On our final night we noticed the fan in our room had stopped working, at the same time noticed that our floor got particularly wet and condensated making it extremely slippery to walk around. We tried to turn the fan back on but was unsuccessful with this making our last night sleep a very sweaty one!!

Best Vacation in the books!!
We had the best time at Sunscape Coco. What made it perfect was the help of Mayra. She made sure everything was perfect and if we had an issue she had it handled immediately. We as a family of 5 were so comfortable and enjoyed every minute of our trip. We are planning to come back ASAP. Please give this resort the benefit of the doubt and book l!! SunClub is the way to go but regardless, the people and resort are fantastic. I miss it terribly!!

don’t even think about it…
My experience at this hotel was awful and I hope those of you reading this listen to myself and other reviewers before making a decision. I myself had high hopes and thought, ‘how bad can it be?’ Welp, it’s bad. If you want to skip the details, scroll down for a brief summary, I will be ranting. Upon arrival, we were taken up to the Sun Club lounge to be checked in, the woman had asked us if we would want to upgrade to the Adults Only section which would be closer to the amenities for an additional 25USD a night. We declined being quite optimistic considering we had just arrived. The woman handling our check-in then explains our room is an 8 minute walk from the main building. We didn’t mind at first but with how hot the sun can be, it can get irritating really fast. We also told this woman it was my birthday and in response, she said she would ensure there would be something done. At this point the room was not ready so we were sent to eat at a nearby buffet. When back to the lounge, they had a bell boy escort us to our room at the back of the resort and when I say back, I mean second to last building. Once we get to the room and open the door, we immediately get hit with a smell of mold and then to make it worse, the bathroom was also not cleaned. We got in contact with someone at reception in hopes to be transferred to someone at Sun Club but we were told instead that they can’t do transfers. Okay fine, one of us will make the 8 minute walk back to the lounge to talk to someone at Sun Club. The woman was no longer there so instead we were assisted by this nice gentleman who showed told us he had a room in the building across from us and let us view it before moving our stuff. This room was significantly better. Zero mold smell and cleaner showers so we gather our things and move into this new room. Until.. Remember how I mentioned that these rooms are located at the back of the resort? Well, if you’re a light sleeper or tend to go to bed early, be prepared for very loud music to be playing every night up until 2-3 in the morning. My mom and I struggled sleeping and had to keep the TV on in hopes to drown out the noise. My only assumption is due to being at the back of the resort, we’re closer to the street so we’re able to hear the loud music easier. This is obviously at no fault to the resort but it is something you should keep in mind if planning to visit. Due to not being able to sleep, my mom and I pay to be moved to the Adults Only area and again, before we made the move, we requested to view the room before committing to it. At this point my birthday had already passed with nothing to show for it. The person helping us with the upgrade was told about it and also promised us something. We go to view the room and when I tell you all the room was stunning! The view wasn’t the best but we aren’t too picky like that so we were content. Again, no mold smell in the room but in the hallways, yes. Once we agreed to take this room, we were told to pack our stuff and wait for the room to be cleaned which was no biggie. We then got the all clear to head down, taking the last 8 minute walk being very thankful for this new and better room. Until.. We were once again greeted with the smell of mold. My mom and I were super confused because we did not remember the room smelling like that but continue to get ready for dinner. We turned off the air vents before we left hoping it will help reduce the smell.. When we get back to our room, the mold smell is not only worse than all the rooms we have been in so far BUT there was condensation all over the floors. My mom and I try to use towels to help dry the floors but that does nothing. We put on masks and decide to contact reception. They respond saying they’ll send someone to wipe the floors but what good would that do if we’ve already done it. So we call again and request to speak with a manager. 30 minutes go by and no one comes to speak with us so my mom ends up going to the lounge to talk to someone. The persons response to my mom asking to switch rooms is, “why did you wait this long to do this?” Well, sir, if I was in my room all day, I would absolutely be able to answer the question for you. It’s only four days in and I’m annoyed, my allergies are starting up due to the various smells, my mom has a headache due to the mold, it’s after 10pm and we are tired. Someone else helps us to find a room but that one also had a smell of mold. My mom then asks if there are any King beds available because we’re just mother and daughter so it would be fine. He shows us a King bed nearby that has no smell and is clean. We stayed in that room for the remainder of the trip. Now for check out. We’re at the Adults Only Lounge checking out and was asked about our stay. The woman at the desk sees our faces and immediately asks us what happened. We explain everything in detail and she apologizes about our experience. She then moves on to the charges of the room which we then ask is there any discount that could be applied due to our experiences. She attempts to get in contact with her manager to speak with us but he was in a meeting that wouldn’t be done for another 2 hours. She then told us to write our names and numbers in a book on a random page for him to contact us. Well, we have been back for over a week and have not heard anything from anyone. Brief Summary: - Changed rooms 4 times mostly due to the smell of mold. Others included loud music and condensation on the floors. - No acknowledgement for my birthday - Food was a 6/10 (you will not survive if you are a picky eater) - Carbonated drinks taste like syrup (seems like they buy the 2L in bulk and use them throughout the resort) - Beach and pools were clean - 10000% recommend the spa, reasonably priced - Le Petit Chef: 7/10 All in all, I am highly disappointed. I know there are things that are out of the workers control and they try to do with the best they can but the resort needs a serious renovation.
