Not a good experience - think very carefully before booking to come here!
If you want a relaxing holiday then DON'T go to this resort! I travelled with my sister here for a family wedding, so the destination for me wasn’t a matter of choice or preference. The hotel was booked back in May 2024 with TUI and at the time of booking I asked for a top floor quiet room to be allocated. On arrival we were given a middle floor room despite the hotel having had a year to get it right! There were plenty of top floor rooms actually available at the time we were there when they allocated one to us, but the room was very dated and had a strong smell of damp to it, which apparently is not uncommon and suggests an issue with the structure of the buildings or with ventilation. When we complained about the damp smell they sent us a dehumidifier, which worked really well, but really for a five star hotel should it have been necessary to have had the dehumidifier in the first place, hmmm!? My second complaint was the food. On the first night we ate at about 8pm and the food was generally unrecognisable (possibly due to most of it being cooked in palm oil which isn't a good start?) and it was luke warm at best with the reality that most dishes were served under heated (when they were meant to be hot!) and this continued for the rest of the week. Even when we ate at times the restaurants had only just opened the food remained under heated (was food being prepared well before opening time and just left out or what!?). Service in the restaurants was hit and miss and generally slow, manyana perhaps!? Now for the most awful thing at this resort, when we managed to get a sunbed by the adult only pool (yes sunbed wars is alive and kicking here!) the music was so loud, not only from the bar music but guests sitting around playing their own boom-box music loud too, so much so that it was uncomfortable to remain there! Guests, you know who you are our state-side yee-ha cousins, were drinking all day but never getting out of the pool (to go to the toilet hence a scummy film in the pool, go figure!?), young girls were being sick and we never saw any management walking around checking on things as they should. In the end we went instead to the beach which was very quiet and calm, the girl serving the drinks there was lovely too. There is a LOT of sargassum seaweed on the beaches and the hotel does what it can to deal with this, but it’s common to see piles of it heaped up awaiting irregular collection be warned. The staff were all generally very helpful and hard working but the management without exception are very poor indeed, not untypical for the Bahia Principe Chain having experienced this elsewhere with them and whom are intent on cutting corners to keep their profit line healthy at your expense! This is not in any respect a 5 star hotel at all, it's about a 3 star party hotel and that’s being very generous! Think VERY carefully before deciding to come here!

Amazing time in Bahia Principe in 🇲🇽
Yet again we came here to Bahia Principe in 🇲🇽, and yet again we are ready to go home not disappointed. The greatest asset of this place are people, who on each step of your stay here make sure you are well looked after. My definite faufourite was Esteban who delivered a great personal training sessions along two weeks when the weather wasn't great or when I had too much sun and we both escaped with my husband to the new gym located in the lobby -1 floor. I also loved every interaction with Maria(entertainment)- so lovely and positive- she was part of alll the shows available during the eveningtimes, Eric in the buffet, and a wonderful laydy from the lunch bar who ensured we always had what we wanted, and how we wanted. Food was really good and I enjoy the buffet as much as the restaurant ( Kuuk)👌. Victor the entertainment director who allowed me to watch every morning the tennis matches which were transmitted in the sports bar for me, even when bar was not fully open, he was always polite and helpful all along with Cesar and other staff who turned the tv on for me .. I can't mention all people, there were so many of them who are the reason to come here. All these pros outweigh the undergoing refurbishment and days where there was a bit less sun.

Anniversary trip
This happens to be my 7th time with Bahia principe and my partners first. We was golden memebers for this trip. If you make sure you remind the check in staff about it , you can receive some upgrades like a room upgrade, we wanted to be by the adults only area so we was placed in block 83. It was amazing to return to Akumal hotel I always love it here. There was some changes, the food overall is great quality and I noticed some resturuants particularly in the luxury hotels to have better food. However my first big disappointment with food was the Katok steakhouse. While the staff was amazing and tried there hardest. The food standards have gone down in this one, having been my favourite on the last 2 visits, I think the menu isn’t as great and the steaks are sub par. I find it funny you can get a fillet for free at any of the other restaurants but the steakhouse it’s a charge. My partner said if you like a big slab of meet it’s great but quality not so. Anyway the other a la cartes was amazing. Our anniversary meal at A LUX was amazing Angel went above and beyond they set up our restaurant meal to such high standards and the service was amazing. Other memorable meals was the one at KU,UK this one is simply to die for. The Mashua is another amazing meal to. Other restaurant staff to shout at was Roger for his amazing service at many a la cartes. There are only a few things regarding a la carte booking and how they are operated I wanted to touch at so I hope the hotel makes improvement, I know it is in fact the low season however I have been many times in the June-August period and have never untill now seen them shut many restaurants some nights. I don’t know if this is down to staffing but it’s not good enough. This does not help making a la carte reservations easy. In fact there was some restaurants that was impossible to book and I didn’t get to go to like the Brazilian. A few I had to book as reservations for one. Wich is silly as if the restuaunt can seat 1 they can seat 2 for sure. This needs to be changed no way should I pay for this level of luxury for it to be difficult to book a la Cartes. I did on arrival speak to a female member of the guest services while they got our room ready who was incredibly rude and did not want to help. Said she could not do anything. This infuriated me. However the next day at our villa I was able to speak to Carolina, she was the best and went above and beyond to help out. She changed bookings, emailed managers to make sure it’s okay. This is the level of service that made the stay amazing and I will say , without her help I would not have enjoyed it as much and maybe would of considered going elsewhere next time. But thanks to her I managed to have an amazing time. She needs to be thanked and also her colleagues reminded this is the level of help they should provide. As later on the trip I wanted to speak to another guest services lady who was also rude. This was about the cancelling of our romantic meal. I canceled as the area it was outside the seafood restaurant had piles off seaweed. For days that stunk, I am aware that the seaweed can’t be helped but I think if you are going to hold romantic meals they should make sure it’s clear from this area and moved somewhere else. I do not want to pay for a meal to smell. I was told it could be inside but this defeats the purpose of it. Anyway all in all a great stay and will be back, just hope the a la carte bookings get improved

A basic hotel with friendly staff
Firstly this is not a luxury hotel and I say that having stayed in luxury hotels in Mexico. Our room was extremely tired and dated. I will say though the staff are very friendly and helpful. The food in the main Buffett is very repetitive, there’s only so much rice you can consume in one holiday, and what looked like half the time rehashed stuff. We managed to get a reservation in the Katok restaurant due to a cancellation, bear in mind that people pre book ALL the restaurants before they even get to the hotel. To me the biggest problem with Katok that needs addressing is the bird situation, yes it’s open and I get that wild birds will fly in and sit on chairs and generally get on your nerves but what is not acceptable is the fact those birds are pecking at the breakfast and lunch buffet food which means some unsuspecting guest will then pick that food up and eat it. I’m curious as to what the food situation will be once the renovations are finalised as to accommodating all those extra people in the restaurants and pools? Another thing is it was searingly hot but there are no parasols for the main section before you get to the sun beds which is fine if you can bear to sit in the boiling hot sun but a few parasols round the large white seating area would be a good addition. Personally I was disappointed in the resort for the money it cost but as people will see there are those that love it, ultimately it’s personal choice just don’t be carried away either way flattering photo.

Very Big Dissapointment !!!
The hotel is not what it seems, and although I have no doubt that once the renovation is finished it will be very good, I regret that our experience was not the best. What I liked least was that they trick people by offering a la carte restaurants when in reality EVERYTHING is overcrowded. We had to argue with the manager and he was only able to reserve two restaurants for us during the six nights we stayed. The worse part was that at the buffet, my niece found a piece of broken glass in her crepe while chewing it. Also, in the children's area, my daughter scraped her entire leg because the slide is porous in some places. We did file a report for both incidents.
