Great beach location
Special trip for special events, had a wonderful time despite rainy days. Some things were better than others. Beach: perfect location, clean, little to no seaweed, enough umbrellas, and excellent service Check-in: Christian was fantastic, made us feel welcomed. We were celebrating a birthday and engagement. Got a gift of upgraded room and felt special. Thank you. All other staff working at the front desk were rude, full of attitude, and zero assistance. Offered bottle of champagne, and treats as a celebration, got nothing. When we mentioned we didn’t get anything, we got eye rolling. Attempting to locate our rep to confirm departure, no one would help. Celebration: Carlos (concierge) said we would get a special gift to help us celebrate. We got nothing. Next day, activated voucher, we mentioned we still didn’t get the bottle service or the fruit plate gift (it’s the thought that would’ve counted and made us feel special). His next pitch was timeshare, after finding out one of us works for travel service, we were told “you’re my competition” and we definitely didn’t get the celebration treats. Very disappointed. Charged us for late check-out, didn’t even get clean towels. But did ask if we wanted to leave tip for our butler and the special treatment, SHOCKED we didn’t even know we had one, never got anything special, only got a note from our maid that welcomed someone with a different name. At checkout they said they do special things for everyone celebrating special events, made us feel even worse more disappointing that we got nothing. They mentioned that will speak to manager for compensation and ask again when leaving, which we did, and in return got same rude response “don’t know what you’re taking about there is no manager.” And still charged us extra. Service staff: FANTASTIC, pool, restaurants, towel service, and cleaning staff were all amazing, hard working, and was always fun. You guys are amazing thank you, especially Tobias, thank u for taking care of us on the beach. Food: was a disappointment, buffet is open only on specific days, seafood you see in pictures doesn’t exist, it’s probably from long time ago. You’re navigated to go to a la carte restaurants, minimal choices and food was okay-ish (we’re not picky eaters, but found hard to get a good grab). French would be the best choice. You also get charged extra for wine that’s served at restaurants. Entertainment: only one thing to say, go to neighboring resort soooo much more fun. If it’s a show, get ready to $75 extra per person. Overall: great resort, perfect location. Would we come back here? NO, if they couldn’t make efforts to remember our special occasion, they would probably forget us on our wedding day.

Perfect hotel, too much cigarette smoke
Very nice hotel, clean, friendly staff, well located, quiet, large beach with beautiful sand, no algae. We eat very well there. On the other hand, no restrictions for smokers and they benefit from it. Smokers on restaurant terraces, smokers by the pool, smokers at the beach, smokers in swim-up rooms, smokers in the lobby. Very very unpleasant to smell cigarette smoke at all times, everywhere. Unlike in Mexico where hotels have designated areas for smokers, the JOIA in Punta Cana does not have one. Very disappointing

This Resort is a great value
Nice clean beachfront resort. I enjoyed the resort amenities such as the swimming pools, jacuzzi, restaurants, gym, spa, tennis, and golf. Our room was very clean and the air conditioning and Wi-Fi worked well. The hot water was not working for a couple of times during our 5 night stay but that was the only issue. The resort and grounds are well maintained by the landscaping crew, however, I almost felt it took too long. From my 10-12 noon, everyday, I would hear the loud gas fueled leaf blowers by the swimming pool and smelt the gas which was very annoying. I would have preferred the landscaping crew finish their loud gas blowing work before 10am when most people are laying by the pool looking for peace and quiet.

A sign of the times?
We traveled yet again to the IBG to celebrate our 44th wedding anniversary. This trip was our 28th trip to The Grand and for the first time, we were very surprised and somewhat disappointed at our greeting and the front desk clerks. Whether or not they were new employees, they showed that they didn't care in any way about a smooth and pleasant check in like we have grown accustomed to over the years. I didn't include any names but I'm sure that the on-line supervisor will follow up. Our room was not ready (#7110) and we had to wait a couple of hours until we were called and escorted to our room by the Bellman sometime after 5pm. The front desk told us that "they could not release the room until a housekeeping supervisor could check it". That was surly a lie! The room was the worst room ever and was 80f as we started to unpack our things. My wife then called me over to the closet where I discovered that the sliding doors were swollen shut and we could not access our safe. I immediately called for a supervisor to fix a bad start to our vacation especially after traveling all day to get there. I told the butler Alex that I wanted another room that was functional or moved to Secrets where we have stayed a couple times. She told me that the resort was at full capacity which WAS A LIE and there were no rooms left. She was tipped accordingly and was by far the worst Butler ever! By the time we finally got into another room , it was close to 7pm and we were tired and fed up with the service we got especially after being there 28 times! Are you kidding me? The next day was a better one and we could see that many new people were working there as we only knew a few. Their key people were all on holiday or preparing for the up coming high season in a few weeks. In all fairness, we ended up having a good time with new and old friends so I wonder why our initial check in was so horrible? This is the first time we ever had a complaint while staying at The Grand! Is this type of not caring service a sign of the times? I truly hope not. Gary and Patricia

The best hotel in the Playa Bavaro area
This hotel gives the best experience in Playa Bavaro in the Dominican Rep. top level hotel with very good food options. The beach bar service by Augusto is excellent. Our butler was Cesar, he went beyond and over. He is a professional, proactively looking for the guests’ wishes. The hotel staff is friendly and very helpful. It is a safe and comfortable environment for vacation.
