Basic All Inclusive Resort

Upon check in, they served us a cocktail, both alcoholic and virgin for the kids. Our envelope was right at the desk with all info...I will say you could tell the woman checking us in had said the speech of the grounds 1000 times...barely looked at us and looked around while giving the layout of the grounds. They immediately led us to our room with luggage. The room was good size (2- full sized beds pushed together and one twin) with sliders overlooking what appeared to be a everglades/swamp? We also were next to tennis courts and some type of very large machines for AC maybe? AC automatically shuts off when the sliders are opened. liquor dispensers above the fridge for those who drink. Waters in fridge and a few sodas. We left a note to leave extra waters and ginger ale but they left sprite type. You can't drink the water except in the restaurants although we didn't drink that either. They hand out large bottled waters at the front desk....at times they can be stingy with them and if you ask for 4 they will give you 3 or 2 saying they are all out...comically the next person in line will ask and they too will get waters, but less than they ask for. I would think installing a water filtration system for the resort would be cheaper than handing out 100's of bottles a day. Loved the pools...there are two, one with a swim up bar (our fave) and the other with a waterfall. The swim up bar tends to get more sun. The beach is nice, a lot of palm trees so quite shady..but a sun worshipper can find spots if you look early enough in the am. Meals were repetitive, but good selection, even for our 2 girls who are pescatarians. Breakfast buffet you can get an omelet to order. Make use of both sides of the main buffet...very little traffic on one side of the room compared to the other with almost the exact same foods. The pool area lounges fill up quickly...and may I add it's very annoying. We saw chairs saved for most of the day (even though that's not allowed) and never used til about 3-4p while we sat way in the back in the shade. I actually got into a heated discussion when I brought this to a late comers attention : Their excuse was they visit this resort every year and they always use these chairs...as if they have an exclusive right. Towels were on their lounges @ 8a and they did not come to the chairs until after 4p because they were on an excursion. REALLY? One other hotspot with me was the restaurant reservation system...unless you are a very early riser, you will be eating in the main dining buffet the whole time you are there. We had one reservation at the steak house and I had to get in line at the main dining room at 6:30a to get it. The first am we were there we tried getting reservations and they were all booked up by 8:05a...and you can only make reservations the day of. The grounds are pretty and we took long walks after dinners before heading back to the room. The one night we tried staying up for the show we ended up leaving...the smokers just smoked us out...and I will say there are designated smoking area but they smoke everywhere..pool/beach/lobby/outdoor show area/ ...it was quite disgusting. I will say, some of these spots are designated nut it was a bit much...if you aren't a smoker you know what I mean. To be honest, for that reason alone we wouldnt go back.

Puerto Plata Surprises Good and Bad

We liked the Riu resort when it had electricity and plumbing (we had blackouts twice —one for six hours another through a night. Service was great. I recommend eating the Grouper and other seafood, as it is delicious. Disappointed that they didn't have bacon for one of the breakfasts (grilled hotdogs). Free snorkling (flippers, mask, snorkel) made up for it, as they have a long reef just feet off shore and when you find the reef's hiding spots you are treated to many colorful fish and sea life. It's was tough to travel beyond the resort, as my wife and I tried to drive to a friends wedding up in the mountains. There are no road names on maps and no street signs anywhere and the car rentals don't have GPS. Every town seemed to be named "Presedente:" (their beer— at the resort I drank all the USA Presidentes in cluding Dewey. John Adams was confusing). Driving is dangerous as their are swarms of small motorcyclist that dart here and there, and every other street leads you directly into shanty towns down roads that become a car rafting over stones. My wife and I got so lost that we had major arguments. I would go back, as I met some really funny and nice people from Boston, England, but my wife will nix it.

What's to Love

With all the choices included at Clubhotel Riu Bachata and its sister Clubhotels, you'll be spoiled for variety here. Even better, everything is connected by well-lit garden paths.

What We'd Change

The casino is on the smaller side and could be a little more exciting. Still, with enough new-found friends, no night is ever boring.

Why You Should Go

As the newest and the largest of the three, we think this is the best of the three Riu resorts. Live it up at the pool or bliss out on the beach.

Hotel Description

Riu Bachata: Cut Loose in All-Inclusive Style

If excitement and time to chill are high on your vacation wish list, Riu Bachata in Puerto Plata is for you. With lively pools and bars plus a mellow, peaceful beach, this all-inclusive resort offers the best of both worlds.

Riu Bachata shares a stretch of sunny Maimon Bay with two sister hotels: Riu Mambo and Riu Merenge. With Riu Bachata's all-inclusive deals, guests enjoy the amenities of the sister hotel's restaurants and bars. Another awesome feature of this resort is its well-known Caribbean Street promenade, a line of shops featuring an art gallery, clothing boutiques and craft shops.

After shopping, model your new bikini at one of Riu Bachata's two pools. The jammin' swim-up bar, Los Lirios, sets up a fun atmosphere. Soak in the Jacuzzi or lean back in the in-pool loungers while the kids whoop it up in the children's pool.

Speaking of kids, this is one of Puerto Plata's top places for family-friendly fun. At RiuLand, the kids' club, children are treated to supervised games in the pool and painting. There are daily kids' shows geared toward different age groups. When the kids are done hanging out at RiuLand, your family can pile into a pedalo, or paddle boat, for a little ocean exploration. Back on shore, there's time for a little snooze in the shade of the trees that line the tranquil beach.

When it's time to eat, head to Bahia de Maimon, a buffet restaurant that serves themed dinners twice a week. Or, make reservations for the poolside steakhouse, Maracuya. For more options, you can choose from a selection of restaurants in Riu Mambo and Riu Merenge.

For nightlife, try your luck at Riu Bachata's casino or attend the nightly shows, featuring music and other entertainment. You even get free entry to Pacha, the thumping disco. After dancing the night away, schedule a massage the next day at Renova Spa. What better way to balance out the partying than with soothing relaxation?
