Very good--as expected

This was my third time to Riu Bachata in the last four years, and the fact that I'm a repeat customer testifies to my belief that it is an outstanding value with all the things that I'm looking for in a beach vacation, especially location (right on the beach). VALUE is the crucial word here, and if someone has expectations of luxury in terms of rooms or food, he/she should look elsewhere. My needs are modest when I go on a pure beach vacay (and for this kind of trip I typically travel without my wife and kids, who don't really love to simply veg out at the beach and pool), and Bachata far exceeds them. I'll go again, perhaps next year. Some specifics to be aware of. First, there is a tremendous amount of cigarette smoking at the resort. If you're a smoker, this is vacation paradise for you. If not, you should factor that into your decision, though I suspect that might be the case at many resorts in Puerto Plata. As a former smoker, I got a little uncomfortable at times (most "inside" spaces aren't really inside because they're open-air, without exterior walls; hence, people really smoke everywhere). It's another reason, though, why I wouldn't bring my kids there and why my wife would hate it. Second, I think it's fair to say that the food seemed just a bit poorer this time (it's been two years since I was there). It was definitely adequate, and there was always rice, beans, and some reasonably appealing protein that I could find; however, it just felt like the food has gone down a notch. Again, this all comes down to expectations: in no way will it keep me from going again, but if you're expecting really good, interesting, and diverse food, there's a good chance you'll be disappointed. Third, you should know that you'll come back with your clothes and luggage smelling damp and musty--obviously a result of the A/C system. I've actually had to throw out some stuff from which I just couldn't eliminate the smell. Fourth, you should ALWAYS attempt to get a second or third floor room. When it rains, the first floors of several (who knows, maybe all) of the room buildings take on water, and rooms can get flooded. I know this from doing research before I booked my first trip and from seeing towels at the bottoms of doors of these rooms when I've been there. Each time I've been there--in addition to requesting it when I've booked--I've reiterated my request (accompanied by a ten dollar gratuity for the front desk worker) for a second or third floor room. Fifthly, and relatedly, your experience (and perhaps your conscience) will be made much better if you demonstrate your appreciation to bartenders and servers. I usually stay around ten days, and I bring 150 dollars in singles to dole out during my visit. Frankly, I'm usually working hard during the final couple of days to get rid of the final forty or fifty. That's all I need, and it really makes a difference.

An excellent choice!

My first time traveling alone and I had the best vacation ever. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Plenty to do at all times. Met people from England and Canada who thought three weeks in this resort wasn't enough. The meal choices were adequate and the entertainment was great. I loved my afternoon nap at the beach. can't wait to go back. I took tons of pictures but don't know how to upload them.

riu bachata

This was a nice hotel for the price we paid and an all-inclusive. The dining options and the food are not the greatest. The Caribbean restaurant was by far the best option. They need to add some hammocks to this property because they sure have the trees for it. They also should have service on the beach for drinks. I also would recommend that they have food from 9 PM to 2 AM at each resort. You need to travel to the riu merengue if you're looking for pick food at night. It is a great value I would say overall a 3.5 resort. The best excursion was the yacht to the private beach, is called a VIP tour. It includes snorkeling and was an amazing day. I suggest that for everyone

What's to Love

The resort is surrounded by a ginormous expanse of lush gardens and the turquoise sea. Swoon-worthy.

The bungalow-style guest rooms in two three-story pastel buildings. It's your happy place.

The two freshwater swimming pools and the solarium terrace. Dive in.

The aahh-some Shiatsu, Lomi-Lomi and stress-smashing massages at the Renova Spa.

Floating along with friends/family/new friends on a pedalo aka paddle boat in the delicious ocean.

The Caribbean Street promenade with shopping, art galleries, boutiques and craft shops.

Visiting the Rum factory famous for its Ron Brugal (rum) in Puerto Plata. Cheers!

What We'd Change

Perhaps more food choices, but you can also go next door to the sister resorts.

Why You Should Go

Several world-class, 18-hole golf courses and horseback riding are near by. Gotta hit these.

You can share all the bars/nosh spots at the sister resorts, Riu Mambo & Riu Merenge.

Rio Damajagua waterfalls & La Isabela National Parks are a short hop away.

You can get wet n' wild with snorkeling, body boards, kayaking, sailing and windsurfing.

Check out the Riu Pacha Club (dancing) and El Millon casino (slots/table games) - Partay!

You can rent a moped, explore the island, then, play a rousing game of table tennis.

Kids ages 4-7 and 8-12 can hang at RiuLand where they can play games in the pool while you chillax.
