A wonderful relaxing birthday at Dreams -

I and my boyfriend just returned from a mini-vacation at Dreams La Romana, Bayahibe where we went to celebrate his birthday. It was a long drive from the Las Americas Airport (approx. 1.5 hrs.) A long drive in to the hotel (atypical of Secrets properties) I was told the hotel is about 12 years old but still quite lovely and very well kept. We stayed in the Adults-Only section and highly recommend it if you particularly want tranquility. We were only staying for 3 nights and wanted relaxation – we definitely got it. We arrived early and although we’d requested an early check-in prior to our flight arriving at 9 am, the room wasn’t ready. It wasn’t a huge factor as there is a changing area and staff made you feel very welcome by offering towels and cool tropical drinks. We just walked around checking out the place. Appetizers are served all day within the exclusive Adults- only reception check-in/out section – we thought that was a nice touch. Our room was very nice and spacious. We also got a welcome champagne and cheese platter on our first night. We’d opted for a garden view away from the main pool area. We were on the second floor and it was very quiet (Room 1117). For whatever reason, our maid did not give us the night turn-down service we were entitled to - but there were some evenings we settled in early so not a big deal. Rain shower in bathroom was great – I also loved the door panels that slide close/open around the shower giving you added privacy if you choose (or you can leave them open and watch TV or whatever while you shower! Very cool!) The view was perfect and the grounds were beautifully manicured throughout. There were even flamingos hanging out in one of the gardens. The canopied lounge beds around the pool had pretty flowering vines running on the tops/sides of them…only slight drawback…a large bee or so might fly by…however, I did so a humming bird come over once. Staff were always visible working on the hotel upkeep – pool area, gardens, restaurants…always good to see. Bottled water is everywhere and readily available (Note: Do not drink the tap water from the bathroom (e.g. while brushing teeth, etc.) however the water is purified at all the restaurants, You don’t need reservations for any of the specialty restaurants but according to the party size, you may have a bit of wait. My boyfriend’s birthday was the same day we arrived so we decided to try the seafood restaurant Oceana with outdoor seating close to the beach for the occasion… there was a party of roughly 20 people just ahead of us so we waited about 20-30 minutes. The food and service were good…and my boyfriend got his dessert amid fireworks and an impromptu “Happy Birthday” song/dance (yes…he joined in! LOL) it was all very nice. The buffet served at the World Café was OK…tons of choices but not particularly spectacular. If you want something quick to eat – it’s great for a grab/go. We ate breakfast there twice but on this particular trip (we were in Montego Bay, Jamaica 2 months ago) preferred the specialty restaurants for dining. I also think the restaurant was too dark (dark-wood vaulted ceilings with not much natural sunlight coming through because of its location – it’s very large but in my opinion needs better lighting. My favorite restaurant was the Seaside Grill – we had lunch there-lovely open-air spot very close to the water and rocks at the other end of the hotel. The French restaurant Bordeaux and the Italian Portofino were also very good for dinner both offering ambiance, good food and prompt service. We did breakfast at Olio’s the Mediterranean spot for Adults-Only. Service was a bit slow but the food was also good. Entertainment – I didn’t think there was too much going on – but to be fair we were usually heading out to dinner and by the time we were finished and heading back to our room we may have caught about 10 minutes of Karaoke, or a bit of salsa dancing depending on the night…things seemed to wrap up pretty quickly. My boyfriend was a bit disappointed as he wanted to participate in the advertised daytime swim contest that for whatever reason didn’t happen or must have started extremely late. He did one of the free dive lessons offered at the main pool…so he was OK after that. The beach is beautiful, clean, a tiny bit rocky in some spots and you may get a bit of a “dip”. If you’ve got water shoes you may want to use them. The sand is lovely, soft and superfine. It’s pretty spread out and there’s enough shady areas, beach loungers, etc. Staff do come by regularly to take drink orders, etc. They also have professional photographers that take pictures of you on the beach you have the option of purchasing them at the photo kiosk if you choose. We bought some and thought they did a very great job – we looked like models!! LOL. We used mostly the outdoor jacuzzi and swim up bar pool in the Adults section for most of our stay although we did “venture” out to the other pools for a little bit. Overall, I would highly recommend staying at the Dreams (Adults only) if you want a relaxing stay in La Romana, DR. I do hope you’ll find this somewhat lengthy review helpful as you plan your trip. Enjoy!

dreams la romana

we have visited DR many times but this was, not only the best resort in DR, but all of the islands in the Caribbean that we stayed. We upped ourselves to a VIP reservation. We suggest that if you are considering the Dreams resort spend the extra money and upgrade to preferred quests. We're talking beautiful bathrobes and slippers in your room, superior service, your own restaurants, a private lounge where they have the greatest snacks ( not kiddy food). Get this one--there's a café/bakery that's open 24 hours for coffee and a wide variety of pastry. I wish the pool was adults only, though. There were families with a lot of screeching kids but we has a choice to go to another of the other pools or the VIP beach. Resort is very beautifully landscaped and immaculate. When you book this vacation, see if you can get to Punta Cana airport or La Romana..Santa Domingo airport is an hour plus to the resort and will cost you $80-110 each way. HAVE FUN--WE DID! It's not a vacation--it's an adventure!

Great Resort

Family of four just returned after an enjoyable stay at Dreams LaRomana. Everything met expectations and we very much enjoyed our upgraded two bedroom suite for just $100/day. Wait staff and housekeeping were very attentive and friendly. The beach was beautiful and we were able to snorkel right from shore to a couple of reef formations just a couple hundred yards away. Food was not as good as other Dreams resorts, though we had no real complaints. Only real issue to speak of was a fairly aggressive attempt at coercing us into buying into their members club. Was way too aggressive and a disappointing experience.

What's to Love

Cool towels and sparkling champagne - palate cleansers after the trek from the real world to Beach Heaven.

It's on an eco-friendly beach along a mind-blowing turquoise sea surrounded by a tropical wonderland.

Explorer's club (kids 3-12) that offers everything from sand castle competitions to arts & crafts.

Red Cross certified staff supervise the aforementioned club. A relief, right?

Parents get a pager from the Explorer's club, should they be needed for anything.

Italian-inspired architecture and manicured gardens that reflect a Mediterranean seaside paradise.

The Brazilian restaurant with churrasco-style cuisine and the lobster restaurant on the pier.

Colonially-inspired family-sized suites with classic decor and private balconies or terraces.

Luxury bath amenities sweeten the pot.

Butlers greeting you after excursions with chilled towels and tasty tropical drinks. This rocks.

The stress-squashing spa with palapas for oceanside massages and Jojoba Oil body exfoliations.

Outdoor hydrotherapy whirlpool baths, two saunas and a Vichy shower.

What We'd Change

The resort is pretty big, which makes for a lot of walking, but that way you can work off all the delicious food!

Why You Should Go

Only 40 minutes from two airports. Either way you get here, you can exhale - you're faraway from reality.

Upgrade to the Preferred Club and get upgraded rooms, access to a private lounge, and much more.

Golf at Teeth of the Dog, The Links and Dye Fore designed by architect Pete B. Dye.

The reef that's right off the beach is full of beautiful fish.

You can take a catamaran, sailboat or speedboat (hang on to your hats!) to dreamy Soana Island.

Catalina Island and Altos de Chavon are also a whisper away.

Rent a private pool for four for a day with the Corner Pool Package!

Connecting rooms, rollaway beds and cribs are available. Just ask.

You can try you luck (or lose your money) at blackjack, roulette and slot machines at the onsite casino.

There are tennis courts (with clinics) along with bike rentals. Woot!

Get your feet (and body) wet with boogie boarding, kayaks, snorkeling, and scuba diving (for a fee).

For laid-back chilling, catch some billiards, dance classes, and a giant chess board.

There's an inflatable iceberg on the beach, plus kids love the Euro-bungee and ocean trampoline.
