Beautiful but not accomodating

Vacationed here with my mom on our first vacation together. Ahead of time cLled to be sure it was handicap accessible along with wheelchairs arc. Upon arriving they do have wheelchairs but of course they want you to purchase them at $25 a day. In which she doesn't need it 24/7 just to get up the massive hill they put us on in which she had to climb every morning to get anywhere. We talked to several ppl about this and they all have us different stories that if she needed to get from her room to breakfast or lobby which was up the hill they would come and get her. This was mis informed info in which they would t come get her at all. Sidewalk going up the hill very very slippery. The room on the other hand again wasn't handicap accessible at all but we made it work. Room was very plain not a lot of decor but was clean. Food was hit and miss but accommodated the different cultures that were there. Beach was beautiful and overall a very nice resort. Just disappointed in the lack of accommodations in which when I booked I made sure she didn't have to worry about. Luckily she is able to get around easier then someone who may not be able to. Oh yea and did I mention rats!! Lots of them eeek

Great Beach, run down rooms

The Beach was great! Well maintained, nice waves, beautiful sand and lots of seating options in and out of the sun. It was nice that they included boggy boards in their offerings of water sports that were included. They were a big hit. The rooms were pretty dated. Our shower had a drainage problem and we ended up in water up to our shins after each shower. I reported it two times but no one came to fix it. Finally we figured out if you pull the drain out it worked better. The Trapeze was a really nice bonus. The kids really enjoyed it and did it everyday. The staff working the trapeze were Awesome! Very friendly, spoke many languages and clearly knew what they were doing. Overall the staff were very good. Great bartenders. The front desk staff were probably the exception. Not very friendly or accommodating at check in and weren't good at answering any questions. Buffet food was ok. Ate at the pasta restaurant at the sister hotel the Azteca and it was exceptional. Ate at the Mexican restaurant at the Maya and while the experience was good and they tried to make it special, the food was simply bland. Overall a pretty good value.

Family spring break

There was six of us staying for a week - from 9 to 67 (including two 16) years of age. Everyone enjoyed the Viva Maya Wyndham. The beach and service was outstanding. Food - we were allowed to book 3 restaurants during our stay. I would like to have had more. The buffet was good. And with all buffets, it's limited. The service at the buffet was great. The bars were friendly and had to deal with big crowds but you never had to wait over a few minutes. Beach and pool - was outstanding. The palms on the beach creating shade was the best. Room - was our least favorite. It was a supreme which is Wyndams regular room. There needs to be more hooks, etc. to hang wet towels, etc. They encourage reusing towels but there wasn't enough room to let them dry. Plus wet bathing suits. Just need more hanging spaces. Room service was excellent though. Lastly, when I checked out, I was handed a check out ticket. I dropped it in my big old bag. When driver pulled up in front of hotel, valet asked for my ticket. I had totally forgotten about "the ticket". Took me a few minutes to find it. It would have been better to have been told to "hang on to this and present it to valet when you leave". Overall, I would do this again!

Hotel Description

Viva Wyndham Maya in Playa del Carmen: Your Inner Island Child Awaits

When playtime calls you south of the border, make your way to Viva Wyndham Maya in Playa del Carmen, where you'll party all night and play all day for an amazing all-inclusive price.

Viva Wyndham Maya sits on a beautiful, Mexican, alabaster-sand beach, where the blue stretches so far it's hard to tell where the water ends and the sky begins. The oceanfront pool, with a bubbling Jacuzzi is magnetizing as well. Your kids will love having their own children's pool nearby. Viva Wyndham Maya doesn't make you play alone, offering organized beach games or water polo. Sailing and windsurfing lessons will challenge the land-lubber in you. If your interest involves deeper water, check out the PADI-certified Viva Wyndham Diving Center where, for an additional fee, dive pros can take you to the Maya Reef, the second longest barrier reef in the world. Here a colorful world of creatures is just waiting for you and your underwater camera.

Are you one of those stressed-out souls needing a little more than warm sun and cool water to untie your knots? Then the Renova Spa with its sauna and steam bath is just the thing. If you really want to make your vacation memorable, go to the spa's beach cottage, where you can get a Mayan tattoo or Caribbean braids. And what's more romantic than a Couples Moonlight Massage?

After you've built up an appetite with all these activities, you can choose from six restaurants to satisfy your hunger. Portofino offers Mediterranean dinners, while Hacienda Don Diego is the place to get authentic Mexican fare. The all-inclusive rate also includes dining privileges at two restaurants at Viva Wyndham Maya's sister property, Viva Wyndham Azteca.

The fun doesn't end after dinner. Nightly entertainment, themed parties and an on-site discotheque means you'll be rocking long into the evening. The resort has a covered theater that seats 600 people, so evening entertainment isn't crowded. This vacation is definitely one for your inner child.
