September vacation

I stayed one week & it was good. Food was ok,you still can find healthy & unhealthy options. Drinks wasn't for me(cheap options). Biggest disappointment of all it's no internet. One area has a very week signal. When I asked stuff about better choice they sold me premium Internet for one week $35. Actually if you get out of hotel it is Starbucks where fast free wifi. When sun is down not too many activities except if you like dance salsa until midnight. Overall, I would recommend.

Overall great time

Things to know ahead of time: BRING CASH- the exchange rate is high and you will end up spending more with your debit/credit card ($10 per hundred plus atm fee) -make sure there are no marks or rips (they will not be accepted and hotel ATMs sometimes dispense damaged bills) and keep them dry OUTDOORS -apply major sunblock if your a northerner (you will still get a killer tan)

Great Family Vacation spot

The resort is located in a perfect location, walking distance (15-20 minutes) to the Town of Playa de Carmen. The beach is one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever been to. The water is a clear blue, calm, very secure. Plenty of activities on the beach and if you want to go for a walk along the beach there are plenty of resorts, beach houses, all filled with tourist. In fact you can walk to play de carmen (~15 minutes). The pool is just the right size, located next to the beach and next to the pool dining and bar area. The pool dining is open 24/7. The rooms are an average size, very clean and well maintained. The service was excellent. Service with a smile where ever you go. The server's were pleasant and always willing to help. The court yard was a wonderful place to meet our family and friends in the evening. We would hangout with after dinner drinks, play dominoes, smoke cigars. I had a group of 50 and we had a blast. Overall a great family location for the price. Recommend, 1. allow pool to be open past 8PM. 2. Have room locks fixed, many guest complained about having to get new room keys, more than once(i.e. card). 3. Provide daily bottled water in room. 4. improve wait times in front desk (checkin, room/guest issues) Although Cheap Carribean could not handle booking the complete group because of the lack of packages many had to go to another website to get the same deal and hotel (~20). I would like to commend Cheap Caribbean and there travel consultant (Tamy). They helped me coordinate the vacation via a AMSTAR (Alejandro) transportation to/from the airport. We also used AMSTAR to schedule family trips, for the most part they were on point with service (most buses were new/good shape), and the price was competitive.

Good value for the money

Just returned from a trip to Viva Wyndham Maya. I traveled June 14-20th, with my two teenage daughters. The resort is small, but some might consider this a good thing as it doesn't take a lot of walking to get around. Also Playa Del Carmen was within a quick 15 min walking distance from the resort. They do try to get you to do the time share presentation but if you say no they don't push too hard. Pools: The pools are really small and there are only two, the adults only pool with a swim up bar and another pool where children are welcome. Not a lot of room to lay out to get sun. Sometimes difficult to find a lounge chair due to limited space around the pool. Beaches: the beach was beautiful!! Gorgeous white sand, warm, clear blue water, very minimal seaweed. There were always available lounge chairs and room to stretch out regardless of the time of day. There were a few vendors on the beach but once you said no, they moved along quickly. You did have to get up to get your own drinks, as service was very limited but it was worth it. Rooms: The rooms are small and economical, no fuss, no muss. They were cleaned daily, the air conditioner worked and the bathroom was in good repair. The soap and shower gel are in a dispenser on the wall. I was able to get extra towels with no problem. There was a tiny refrigerator in the room but it did not work. I did not call for service on it though because we were not using it. There is a $2 per day cost to use the safe. Food: the food in the buffet was mediocre at best. Limited variety and mostly bland. We had no problem finding a table. The Mediterranean restaurant and the international restaurant had better food but nothing great. You have to make reservations for the specialty restaurants. Actually making the reservation was easy but there was extremely limited availability. The drinks were good and plentiful, not top shelf but good. Entertainment: they had a few things for smaller children but not a lot for my teenagers. The shows at night were ok. The staff were nice but no where near as enthusiastic as other resorts I've been. They tried to get people involved in beach volley ball, Zumba and other daily activities but there seemed to be minimal participation, perhaps because of the lack of enthusiasm. Service: though the staff was nice, they weren't overly friendly. No one went out of their way to speak or make you feel welcomed as I have experienced at other resorts. But they would responded if you spoke. They responded to any requests fairly quickly. Otherwise it's mostly self service. I did have a problem in the gift shop (which is pretty pricey) on the day of checkout. They wouldn't let my daughter make a purchase in US dollars because we no longer had our wristbands (they cut them off when you check out, the first time I have EVER seen a resort do that, and I travel often). So the cashier made my daughter go exchange US dollars for pesos, which she had to then exchange back to US dollars. When I spoke to them about the time and inconvenience they were uncaring. Overall this was a decent resort for the price I paid. Small but clean. It is definitely a 3 star resort so if you are looking for more, it is not for you. But if you are looking for a quick no fuss get away for a good price and you don't mind self service, this would be a good value for you. Lastly Xel-Ha was a great excursion for my girls. They swam with the Dolphins, went snorkeling and relaxed on the lazy river. Also the price of admission includes all you can eat and drink (including alcoholic beverages), which was nice. Definite a must for anyone with kids.

Hotel Description

Viva Wyndham Maya in Playa del Carmen: Your Inner Island Child Awaits

When playtime calls you south of the border, make your way to Viva Wyndham Maya in Playa del Carmen, where you'll party all night and play all day for an amazing all-inclusive price.

Viva Wyndham Maya sits on a beautiful, Mexican, alabaster-sand beach, where the blue stretches so far it's hard to tell where the water ends and the sky begins. The oceanfront pool, with a bubbling Jacuzzi is magnetizing as well. Your kids will love having their own children's pool nearby. Viva Wyndham Maya doesn't make you play alone, offering organized beach games or water polo. Sailing and windsurfing lessons will challenge the land-lubber in you. If your interest involves deeper water, check out the PADI-certified Viva Wyndham Diving Center where, for an additional fee, dive pros can take you to the Maya Reef, the second longest barrier reef in the world. Here a colorful world of creatures is just waiting for you and your underwater camera.

Are you one of those stressed-out souls needing a little more than warm sun and cool water to untie your knots? Then the Renova Spa with its sauna and steam bath is just the thing. If you really want to make your vacation memorable, go to the spa's beach cottage, where you can get a Mayan tattoo or Caribbean braids. And what's more romantic than a Couples Moonlight Massage?

After you've built up an appetite with all these activities, you can choose from six restaurants to satisfy your hunger. Portofino offers Mediterranean dinners, while Hacienda Don Diego is the place to get authentic Mexican fare. The all-inclusive rate also includes dining privileges at two restaurants at Viva Wyndham Maya's sister property, Viva Wyndham Azteca.

The fun doesn't end after dinner. Nightly entertainment, themed parties and an on-site discotheque means you'll be rocking long into the evening. The resort has a covered theater that seats 600 people, so evening entertainment isn't crowded. This vacation is definitely one for your inner child.
