Beautiful Beach
Our trip to the Viva Wyndham Fortua Beach was a week of abosulty beautiful weather and a fabulous beach. The service was good and the staff friendly. Most importantly the beds were comfortable. The food was pleantiful but got a little boring by weeks end. The pizza grill had great after hours pizza. We went in the off season so it wasn't crowded at all. We met many new friends and all in all had a wonderful time. The time share speal was a little tiresome but not too overbearing if you can say no.
This resort is in desperate need of an overhaul. The sand was riddled with ketchup and mustard packets. The refrigerator in the room did not work and all of the resort was open air except specialty restaurants. The best thing about the resort was the brick oven pizza!
My husband, 16 yr old son and I had a fantastic vacation at this resort. There were people from all over the world there, so it felt very foreign and fun! The resort did lack some amenities and we had a few problems, but on the whole, it was a great experience. We're not fussy people, so the little hiccups didn't bother us. The beach is wonderful-sand like powdered sugar and not hot like the sand back home. The views of the beach and the color of the water were what I came for! The snorkeling right off of the beach was unbelievable-we swam with a parrot fish that was 2 feet long and took some great pictures of him (and his buddies) to take home! There was a huge variety of fish to see. We also took the snorkeling trip to the "fish farm" which was definitely worth the money as well.
We bicycled into town one day which was really hard work; we should have gone someplace closer! The best part of our trip was all 3 of us doing things together like playing ping pong, bocce ball and pool. Our son played soccer, did archery and found lots to do since there were scheduled activities appealing to all ages. The nightly shows were fun and better than we expected and the day "crew" had lots of talent when they performed at night. More seating is needed for the shows and the lack of air conditioning in the buildings may be hard on some folks. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
We had reservations at both restaurants and both were good, but not upscale. We always found something to eat in the buffet line and never went hungry although it got slightly repetitious at times. The grill specials were the best part of the dining buffet.
We all had a great time and we've already recommended this to our friends. We would definitely return! Can't wait to snorkel there again!

In the Bahamas...I stayed on Paradise Island (The Rui and Paradise Island Harbour All-Inclusive Resorts) are good. My mom and I felt safe. No problems at all. We spent all last week there.
Paradise Island Harbour is an older hotel but the food was good, room ok, alcohol, good. It was quiet at the beginning of week but got busy around Thursday night.
We left on Saturday (travel Tuesday to Saturday). We had a blast!

Hi there,
I just got back from a trip to the Jolly Beach Resort in Antigua (which is an all-inclusive resort). It was an EXTREMELY safe resort. There were security guards at the entrance so that no one could get into the resort who didn't belong there. Not once during the entire trip did I feel even the slightest bit unsafe. The beach is private (with the exception of a couple vendors trying to sell jet ski rides and they very easily accept no as an answer and then leave you alone). Outside of the resort, there is a Harbor (Jolly Beach Harbour) which has a lot of nightlife (bars, restaurants, boardwalk, etc.) and it was a very "hoppin" area and also very safe (it is literally about a 5 foot walk from the resort. As soon as you leave the actual resort entrance, you are immediately at the start of Jolly Beach Harbour. I did not venture anywhere else in Antigua, but there are parts of Antigua that you will see from the ride from the airport to the resort that are poor (but that is to be expected).
I did not travel alone to this resort, but I did meet a woman (in her mid-40's) who traveled alone and really enjoyed the peace & quiet if that was what she wanted on a particular day, or she joined in all the fun and met other people (Jolly Beach Resort hosts a lot of activities every day to keep people engaged and having fun)!!
I hope this helps!

Viva Wyndham is very all-inclusive. Do not go here if you are a gourmet or picky eater, as their focus is not food. We felt safe here, but watch your belongings on the beach, as some small thefts occurred there. The activities are great! You will love it if you are an active person. If safety is your main concern, check with the US Embassy in the Bahamas for accurate information.

Carol, I've been to Viva Wyndham Fortuna twice now. This is a secured facility - all inclusive, so no need to venture out. The beach is beautiful and the staff is very accomodating. I'm planning yet another trip there. Can't wait!

It was very safe and all inclusive drinks were a MAJOR plus. The food is so so but the nightly pizza is AMAZING!

Don't go to this resort!!!!! The food is not that good and the dining hall is only open certain hours. Very run down and lots of things in the rooms don't work...like the AC. Poor customer service.

Myself and a girlfriend stayed at the Gran Bahia Principe in Jamaica. It is listed as family friendly although there were many couples and loads of clothing-optional European families and couples on the beach (there is a clothing-free section far away from the family area if that's your thing which the French/Dutch seemed to ignore :). We felt safe always, had fun dancing in the clubs with the locals. The food in the buffet was very good, wine at extra cost was horrid so we just asked for and received extra "floaters" on the mixed drinks and bartenders obliged. It was not peak season but we still made sure to stake our spots on the beaches and pool areas early. The restaurants were hit or miss (the Italian was AWFUL, the continental was good). Had a massage at the spa and it was right up there in quality with the spas at the Fairmonts we've been to. The room was very nice-I negotiated an upgrade with CheapCarib based on comparison shopping with Expedia, received it, and the room was bigger than expected and nicely appointed. Had a few minor housekeeping issues that were resolved by a housekeeping manager right away, courteously and were kept up with thereafter. They obviously cared about our pleasure with our stay. The grounds are immaculately maintained. I did not like that the pools closed at dark, but it also keeps it quiet in the evenings and there is the beach if you must get wet after dark. We went at the end of June and it seemed a good time to go- not peak, post Spring Break. The staff were all typically good-natured Jamaicans who were ready to assist and strike up honest conversation. The beach is manmade mostly and not the best one I've been to but not the worst either and as a girlfriend trip we did really enjoy it. Transportation was included to the resort, and I even got my "rain" credit - it does rain in the Caribbean about every afternoon that time of year but it's also a welcome respite from the heat and sun and passes quickly. Overall I felt the resort was better than the three star rating (3.5, not a four) and the value for the money was definitely there. We weren't looking for a singles type place and I think we were the only women there who went as a pair - in other words you certainly won't find a date there, but if you're just trying to get away on your own, this is a nice place to do it.

Well I stayed at the Viva Wyndham Fortuna resort in Grand Bahama Isalnd I would defitniely stay there by myself. EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE is super friendly. I left my do not disturb sign out front and they did just not not disturb. They left my towels by the front door and it was great. If you are looking to relax this is the place. By like 10pm most places are closed in the lucaya marketplace except for the restaurant and few bars. I would recommend this Viva or Radisson at Grand Bahama Island.

My 21-yr-old daughter and I went to Viva Fortuna Beach on Grand Bahama Island last week and found it to be plenty safe for women on their own. The resort itself was very safe and everyone was friendly. Whether or not you like it depends on what you are looking for - this is a family-type resort and not a place to find single men. We felt plenty safe in town (Port Lucaya) at night, as well.

Viva Wyndham at grand Bahama island was great. The resort is not busy with lots to do and and we felt 100% safe with 3 kids. The resort is away from town and all on it's own which makes it great.

I have a toddler who loved the baby pool at the Viva Wyndam in Grand Bahama Island. The water is warm most of the time however but perfect for small babies & toddler. There's no shade near the pool area so cover babies up well or they'll burn.

Also are we close to downtown shopping area from the Wyndham Hotel?
Or would we be closer to Eleuthera Island if we stayed in Nassau? Please answer these 2 questions, I need this iformation in order to book my vacation to the bahams.

Grand Bahama Island is a distance from Eleuthera Island. When searching the internet, there was no information available for a ferry between these two islands. It appears a flight would be the best transportation between the islands. If you are looking to be close to Eleuthera Island, your best option is to stay in Nassau or Paradise Island.

Ten minute taxi ride to downtown shopping. I dont know the ferry answer.
harsh
Not close to any downtown shopping or any shopping anywhere. Never been to Nassau so not sure if it would be better.
Lessness
Not sure about the ferry, but there are two main shopping centers near the resort. About a 10 minute cab or car ride. Not really walk-able. We rented a car and drove around the island and went to the shopping centers then. Viva Wyndham Fortuna is a little distance from most of the other resorts which is nice because you have a bigger, more secluded beach. It's still very close to downtown Freeport, though.

Hi Joyce--
The water in the Bahamas doesn't differ too much from the Caribbean waters further South. Typically, it ranges from 84 degrees in the Summer, but rarely falls lower than 72 degrees in the Winter.
LaurenCC
The pool water is warm during the day because of the sun and moderate when the sun goes down. The beach water is similar.

It was about 80 degrees

what are your rates for single travelrs to the Bahamas?1 answer
2 months ago
e
When pricing out a trip as a single traveller, simply change the number of passengers to one. The website automatically defaults to 2 pax (or double occupancy). The rule of thumb is that one person paying the single supplement rate pays about the same price for the room as two passengers paying double occupancy rates. Of course, many of our proprties have wonderful packages with very competitive pricing for single travelers.

I have read that there isn't much extra to do at the Viva Wyndham. What about excursions? I see the ones that are available for booking through cheapcaribbean, but are there others to book once there, and if so, what types?

CheapCaribbean does offer many excursions that you may pick from prior to your travel. You may also wait until you arrive in destination as they will have vendors on the property who provide excursions as well. Unfortunately, we do not have any information on what excursions are provided when you arrive.

We just came back from there and there was plenty to do. Snorkeling, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, volleyball, bociball, soccer, pingpong, foosball, swimming pool, hot tub, etc. all of which were free. We went to dolphin encounter which was great. Deep sea fishing we caught a wahoo and the chef at the resort prepared it for us at no charge and it was so good. There are lots of other excursions to do but wait till you go to book because it will be cheaper and you can check the forecast after you get there to choose the best weather days.. There is also dance lessons and aerobics by the pool every day as well as bingo where a few bottles of Bacardi rum are won every day.

There are so many options once you get there and the staff is very helpful if you have questions. My husband and I rented a car for a whole day for only $50 plus gas. We had a great time exploring the island. Cabs are available to pick you up or the rental service is right in front of the hotel. We chose not to do any other excursions (we just loved sitting on the beachs and there was unlimited sailing, snorkeling, parasailing and kayaking on the beach) but there were many brochures there in the lobby with info on them. Hope that helps!

The resort never hosts more than one wedding per day, so you'll never have to share your bliss with anyone but your own wedding party. Dedicated wedding coordinators have years of experience and they'll assist you with everything down to the smallest detail. To make things as stress free as possible, you'll have a single point of contact from tour to departure.
Extra services are available, should you need salon services, a harpist, help with obtaining a marriage license or catering. The resort can host up to 300 guests.
Special Features:
Beach ceremony - private space on the beach just for you; can host 300 guests surfside.
