Won’t be returning until it’s refurbished
The room they put us in was very dark and damp! The mould grew throughout the first week which made my partner cough and had to go to hospital!!! They move us to a new room which was much better!!! But the room should have been condemned as it was so damp! I understand the humidity in Mexico is high but that room was unexcepable!!! They cleaned the mould with bleach knowing someone else was going in that room after us!!! TUI knew about this but wasn’t overly bothered! The rest of our holiday was ok!!! Food was mediocre and the whole place needs a refurb!!! Looks very tired!!!!

Another Great Riu Stay
Man, I missed the Caribbean and this was a great way to get back together! Our family of 10, ranging in age from 10 - 80, had such a great time at Riu Yucatan from Dec 27 - Jan 1. If you have never been to a Riu property for New Year's Eve, you are missing out. They really know how to put on a party. A few details about our trip: We had 3 rooms, all with 2 double beds. I had seen a suggestion to take a cheap shower curtain and painter's tape and hang up a "door" to the bathroom area. This was a welcome and most helpful suggestion to add some needed privacy. The air conditioning was pretty hit or miss, which we have found to be at any property we visit. One room was nice and cool, one room was quite hot and the other was just ok. Seems the a/c units in tropical areas struggle, go figure. Food was all good. Soups were exceptional - don't skip out on them. Entertainment was fair, but to be honest, we usually just played games we had brought with us until everyone was tired. We loved the size and layout of this property. Our favorite were the beach chairs at the pool that faced the ocean - best of both worlds but very hard to acquire (but we were not to be denied). Lots of beach area and we enjoyed the time on the beach and in the water. The pool seemed to always have something fun going on and was entertaining. You could hide out at the "calm" pool if you wanted peace and quiet. We enjoyed the hammocks in that area in the evening. Most fun by far for our whole family was all the wildlife. The monkeys were so fun to see and hear. We were in Building 3, which I would request again if possible due to being close to everything. The staff was able to give us rooms on the bottom floor (for my dad with very bad knees) and we were all close together. All the staff were super friendly and seemed to enjoy doing their jobs and interacting with the guests. We generally try to go somewhere different, but I would absolutely come back to Riu Yucatan if we come back to this area in the future.

Time to raise the bar
The Yucatan is the 7th RIU hotel we’ve stayed in. I have to say that the experience offered has been less and less enjoyable over the last few years. A few years ago we stayed at the Tequila and actually visited the Yucatan beach and had lunch there. After a Quick Look around we concluded that the Yucatan was the better of the two. I’m not sure that would hold up now. Friday night is either the Neon or White Party at the Tequila. The alternative is an evening in the Lobby Bar. Generally the entertainment is pretty average. Sometimes it wasn’t as good as that. The Rock Show with a live band was the standout. The second Rock Night was actually the Animation Crew, which was very good. Mariella was our favourite. The Quiet Pools were very good. We tried all the themed restaurants. The Asian was okay, nothing more. The Italian was a bit better. The Mexican was good and the Steakhouse was the best. We went there twice. The main Buffet Restaurant was okay but very repetitive. By the end of the fortnight we’d tried everything we were going to try. The Margarita Restaurant is used for lunch and is also used for the Mexican and Steakhouse restaurants. It offered less mayhem as it was set out much better than the Buffet Restaurant. Our waitress in the buffets was Paola. She was a treasure. On her days off we were looked after by Hortensia (I think). The room was very good with a big shower and a big comfortable bed. Although it’s advertised as 5 Star, I think 3 Star Plus is more reasonable. I think standards have slipped a bit.

Horrible Wifi connection
The Wifi connection at this resort was awful. I had a hard time connecting my phone, downloading movies to watch offline and couldn't watch any movies and shows on my iPad. I'll take this resort for the entertainment and animals. But everything else forget it. I won't recommend this resort and I'm not coming back to this place anymore.

FIND ANOTHER PLACE TO STAY!!
My experience at this hotel fell dramatically short of reasonable standards. From arrival to departure, we encountered a series of failures that transformed our stay into an exercise in frustration. A Faulty First Impression & Check-In Our arrival set the tone: no bellman in sight to assist with luggage—a first in my travels. The front desk then spent over an hour attempting to process our American Express card in USD, failing to understand it required local currency. Only after my intervention and a manager's involvement was this basic issue resolved. Unacceptable Accommodations The assigned room was unacceptable: the air conditioning was broken, and it was visibly unclean. With no alternative rooms available, we were forced to relocate to our children's room for the night. We received no compensation for this immense inconvenience—at minimum, that night should have been comped, as we paid for a room we could not use. While we moved to a new room the next day, the problems persisted. Linens were insufficient (only two towels for four people, one flat pillow per person) and requests for more were only partially fulfilled. The decorative bedspread was soiled, raising questions about cleanliness protocols. Subpar Facilities & Amenities The hotel's infrastructure is severely neglected. Peeling paint is widespread, and the lack of an elevator—especially for top-floor guests with heavy luggage—is astounding. The weight room is tiny, with poorly maintained, dirty equipment. The food was a particular low point. Buffet offerings were often unappetizing and presented with little regard for hygiene, making hotel restaurants a last resort. Inconsistent Service & Token Gestures While the bartenders and housekeeping staff were notably friendly, the front desk team, though polite, often seemed inconvenienced by questions. A "compensatory" bottle of wine felt like an insult—its label was tattered and worn, as if retrieved from disposal, perfectly symbolizing the hotel's neglect. The Sole Redeeming Feature The beach was genuinely beautiful: spacious, clean, and lined with picturesque palm trees. The grounds were also well-kept. Final Verdict This is not a resort that values guest comfort or quality. Between the deficient accommodations, failing facilities, and lack of meaningful service recovery, it represents extremely poor value. I would not return under any circumstances and would caution others to seriously reconsider booking here—unless their expectations are virtually nonexistent.
