Vacation in Paradise
The property was gorgeous. Room decor and accommodations need updating but the food, service and amenities were fantastic. I would definitely recommend upgrading to the Royal Service. Taking the safari excursion with Bavarro Runners, especially with Johnny and Sammy is a must. Don't buy any cigars on the beach as recommended by tour guides as you can get authentic ones through your excursion outlets. Shop around for excursion options and prices as these vary from different vendors. Be sure to pack everything you think you will need for vacation from home as the price of things in the Caribbean is ridiculous. I highly recommend NOT converting your US cash into any other currency. The US dollar is best as you get ripped off on the conversion to and from the dollar. I will definitely come back to the Punta Cana area. Overall, we had a wonderful time and loved every day there in paradise.
The decor of the entire site is unbelievable; first class in every way. The service personnel gave the highest performance available; there was no want of anything. The food, while plentiful ended up being less than stellar after 7 days; too much redundancy. The "fine dining" decor was excellent, the plating of the food, also. There is definitely room for improvement in selections and how they were prepared (this speaking as an American so one must bear in mind that other cultures don't always do as we). The greatest problem for us (4 adults) is that everything seems to be centered around drinking. We don't drink (Saved Melia some money on that end!) so the time lag from dinner, +- 7:30 p.m.) until the 10:00 entertainment almost became terminal in wasted time. Couple that 2 1/2 hour wait with overly loud, mediocre entertainment (apart from the Dominican review) and it was a waste.
How to improve? Bear in mind there might be some older folk, median age 66, who don't drink, and would appreciate entertainment more age appropriate... not everyone just wants to get drunk and carouse!
Melia Caribe Tropical was amazing! My fiance and I got engaged on our trip and it was definitely an experience to remember. From the friendly staff to the beautiful layout of the resort, we were more than satisfied with our trip. It was nice to be at a resort that didn't involve huge, skyscraping buildings; the resort was spread out in smaller villas and it was gorgeous. There were security guards everywhere you turned so we definitely felt more than safe! Hector from Olympus Tours was great and really took great care of us with choosing and planning excursions for our trip. The only downfall was the restaurants. While there was much to choose from, it was difficult to get reservations at times and it seemed liked the staff in the restaurants were spinning around so the service was very slow. Overall, we definitely recommend Melia Caribe Tropical!
Overall we were pleased with our stay. The resort and the grounds are fantastic and fun to walk around as well as take the mini trolley -trains. If you are experienced with all-inclusives then you are prepared for the dining options. The food was average as well as the breakfast and lunch buffets - fairly bland and predictable. Dinner reservations are required but it seemed that preferred times were frequently not available only to discover that the restaurant wasn't packed at that time when you walked by later. Also they indicate a dress code for dinners which we followed b/c it was nice to be out of beach wear but others did not. Also don't drink the house wine - it is TERRIBLE and will bring down your dining experience.
Most of their English pamphlets have grammar errors or are missing information. Example: If you choose to use a calling card get full information when you check in. The stated connection rate for calling cards is RD$85 (approx $2-3 USD) -> we prepurchased a card for this trip and when we checked out found that they wanted to charge us between $250-$300 for phone connections back to the states so we could check on our children. We did manage to get a 40% cut in this but you need to ask about it up front. The poor english in some of their information creates questions.
There are not many Americans at this resort - plenty of Canadians, Europeans and Russians (lots of Russians) so be prepared for lots of smokers -> but you can avoid them as well.
Hope this helps.

How difficult is to make reservatios in A La Carte restaurants?11 answers
There are hotels where is very difficult to make those reservations, unless you pay for "Special Services".

There are a number of a la carte restaurants which should make it easy to make dinner reservations. Some restaurants let you make reservations for your entire stay at one time, while for others you must make reservations the day of. You are best to check directly with the resort for their specific rules at the time of your stay.

I didn't have any trouble, just call the reservations number, be flexable with what time you want to eat. Most people eat later so if you eat a little earlier you shouldn't have trouble. I never got turned down because I didn't pay for special services. If one is booked ask about the others and whats available, they will tell you.
mortimer
It was easy to make reservation in A La Carter restaurants.
DRQBUI
Yes it was difficult. It was hard to get a hold of anyone. If you were lucky enough to talk to a person, then the chosen restaurant is closed. You also have to pay $30 extra for Japanese food or $35 for steak. What kind of "inclusive" is this?
namphu
Not a problem except that not all restaurants are open every day.
Making reservations just requires a phone call every two days since one may make reservations two days in advance.

I didn't find it difficult at all! Actually, I made reservations rather easily, but had to cancel due to time constraints with my excursions.

We had Royal Service so it was easy to make reservations.

I would definitely suggest making the reservations the night before....otherwise your stuck with the buffets.
