Beautiful resort - shady merchants in cities
This was our fifth time at this resort and we love going there. We have found that some changes over the years aren’t how we’d like it to be but the food, staff and cleanliness can’t be beat. A few words of advice: Beds aren’t the best but if you speak to the hospitality's Manager they can get you a memory foam. Front desk and guest services said there were none. We went to playa del Carmen for a day - and it was showering so we took the courtesy umbrella - WARNING merchants must recognize the resorts umbrellas because we were approached 3 separate times by men claiming they work there as well. The first guy we believed and he encouraged my husband to pay visa - we fell for it 🙄. Tried running the card a few times - told us the system was down - we paid cash and left. Have a fraudulent charge of >$800 - no receipt so no recourse. Be smarter than us!

Great hotel
Great hotel beachfront, great entertainment team and food was varied and all of great quality. We stayed in 2 economy suites which were well maintained and comfortable. Wildlife in hotel was amazing and gardens were kept immaculate. You can use other hotels amenities and restaurant s and pools in complex.

Great resort, and great for birding
I stayed at Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal in January 2026 and it was tremendous in every way. Safe, clean, good service and facilities, great food, cold beer, etc. But as a bird watcher and nature enthusiast, I was esp. impressed with the resort grounds and their "Eco-Bahia" program. There was a super diversity of habitats at and around the resort, And I was able to bird/hike on all of the other (4?) abutting Bahia Principe resorts easily, and this enriched my experience greatly. Late in my stay, I learned of the "Eco-Bahia" programs that are based out of Bahia Principe Coba, immediately to the west of Akumal. This is a great program. Kudos in particular to Bruno, a biologist with whom I did a birding hike at the end of my trip. Knowledgable, professional, skilled, and great English. He got me on several excellent bird species. I'll do more of that the next time.

Inferior Quality and Service — Definitely Not a Five-Star Resor
This is absolutely not a five-star resort. I’ll highlight just a few of the major issues we encountered, though I’m certain I’ve forgotten others — there were simply too many. Let’s start with the food: mediocre at best. The service was consistently subpar. I had to request slippers five times — four times over the phone and once in person with the manager at the front desk — before they were finally delivered the next day. The room floors are cold ceramic, making slippers a basic necessity. The rooms are dated, and ours — like others in the hotel — lacked blackout curtains, making it difficult to sleep past sunrise. Most of the beach is rocky, and the small portion that is swimmable is, unsurprisingly, overcrowded. The hotel hosted a New Year’s Eve buffet dinner with a 9:00 p.m. reservation. However, due to a long line, we weren’t seated until 9:20. By 10:00, they stopped serving food and drinks and began clearing tables — including ours — even removing unfinished drinks. So much for a festive New Year’s celebration. While the property has multiple pools, none are heated. Given the cooler winter weather, the water was uncomfortably cold and unusable. Due to the poor service, we decided to check out a day early. Shockingly, the front desk manager refused to process our early departure unless we would sign a document stating we had no complaints and would not pursue any further claims. Why would the even have such a document.....

Totally Unacceptable!!! No Restaurant Reservations Available!!
Well, we have been to this resort last year , we were fairly happy with the experience throughout the resort. I am writing this 1 week before our return trip and have made numerous attempts to make restaurant reservations finding that there is no availability!!! This is totally unacceptable as a rated 5* resort. We have been travelling for over 30 years. Most resorts have not required reservations prior to arrival and is very unfair to seniors who have trouble navigating through the app. I hope that someone in customer service will respond to my low rating in the coming days to resolve this issue.
