Birthday Vacation

My boyfriend and I traveled here for a birthday trip. Pros: Resort is big and is really pretty. Food was always good and plenty of it. The two specialty restaurants we went to were really good – recommendation for the Brazilian steakhouse. The buffets were good and we had ample food available. The main pool where all the entertainment and day activities were is a blast. We upgraded and the pool by our room upgrade had premium liquor (jack daniels especially) and that was an amazing find! The golf cart service that takes you around the resort was def a plus and very much needed in that sun! Cons: We upgraded to enjoy some sort of elegance to make this bday trip special – to our welcome our room’s AC didn’t function to full capacity and there was a leak in the ceiling from it. Complaints and few repair men later we still came back to a heat infested room! Not what you would like after a day out in the sun! We were moved rooms and hoped to enjoy our last days in a good room… WELL .. in the new room our toilet had a leak and the water in the shower/tub would not go down! It was a nightmare, we complained and they claim to fix it but to literally the day we left it was never fixed. All the bars close at 11pm – the only place opened was a club that was located in the resort that was far from our room and waiting for the car service was a long wait each night that we gave up the effort. The reservations for the restaurants go so fast one night literally eating dinner at 10pm and when we passed by it at 7pm in hopes to change it the place was soooo empty! I just didn’t appreciate the accommodation. Overall I would not recommend this resort – it was nice and we made the best of it but our room situation was the biggest fail ! when on vacation your UPGRADED room should be beautiful and a place to relax after a full day out in a 90 degree sun but for us it was not worth the headache or the extra money at that!

Wheelchair Users = "Buyer Beware"

On June 9, 2016 I booked my 7th trip in six years with Cheap Caribbean. As always, I informed the Cheap Caribbean representative of my need for a wheelchair accessible room at the Grand Bahia Principe, and I waited on the line while he called the resort to notify them of my need. Our trip was set for August 5 - 12. When my mom and I arrived at the Grand Bahia Principe on August 5, a young lady began the check-in process with us. She asked us to move to a table where she gave us our wristbands, and then she walked away without an explanation. We thought she would return momentarily. After about 15 minutes of sitting there, we were greeted by two different employees - Aws and Samantha. They asked how they could help us, and we said we were checking in but didn't know exactly where the person who had been helping us went. Aws and Samantha walked away, then came back and told us our room was not ready yet. They suggested we go get something to eat and come back in an hour. We went to the restaurant and ate, looked around in one of the shops, then returned to the registration area. More than one hour had passed. When we asked about getting our room key, there was nobody who could give us the key or explain what was going on. Clearly there was confusion, and either nobody would - or nobody could - tell us what was happening. I went to the Guest Relations area and asked a female employee there if she could help us straighten out whatever was going on. She couldn't. Finally someone told us that they did not have a wheelchair accessible room available. Ridiculous attempts to "solve the problem" ensued: 1. They would move us to a first floor room (my mom went to look at it before we agreed to take it, and the bathroom door was not wide enough for my wheelchair to fit through). Just because it's on the first floor doesn't mean it's accessible for someone in a wheelchair. No good. 2. Aws asked if I could just stay in the room that was not accessible for one night, and then the following night we could be moved to an accessible room for the remainder of our stay. Uh, no, I will not stay in a room where I can't go to the bathroom. 3. A manager named Luis offered to put us up one night in a wheelchair accessible room in the Sian Ka'an portion of the resort (across highway 307 on a golf course). When mom asked if she could see it before we agreed to it, he told us it would be 10 minutes because the room was being cleaned by housekeeping. We said we didn't care about that, we just wanted to see if it was accessible and it didn't matter if someone was in there dusting at the moment. No, he said, we had to wait. Mom asked him what the room number was and after dismissing her question several times, he eventually said he didn't know. How can he know the room is available and accessible if he doesn't know its number? Mom finally went with Luis to look at the room - a 15 minute ride on a golf cart to get there, another 15 minutes back - and when they returned to where I waited in the lobby, mom told me that the sink and the toilet in that room are so close together there is no way I could get my wheelchair close enough to the toilet to transfer onto it. No deal. 4. We asked if the staff could check with those guests currently in wheelchair accessible rooms to find out if they absolutely needed the accessible room, and if anyone did not, offer them an incentive to move out early and make the room available for us. Principe staff would not consider that suggestion. Through the course of the afternoon and into the evening we were misled, lied to, and strung along under the guise of being "helped" by Principe staff and management. I called the Cheap Caribbean phone numbers provided for when problems arise while on vacation (001-800-590-6489 and 1-267-895-5161), but all I heard on the other end of the line was music. I listened to music for about 10 minutes and then hung up. It was becoming clear that mom and I were on our own. I had the phone number for the Barcelo Maya resort, which is about 15 minutes north of Principe, so I called them to inquire about a wheelchair accessible room for the week. Fortunately they had one, so although it added CONSIDERABLY to the cost of the trip, I had no choice but to book it. We got a cab to the Barcelo resort six hours after arriving at Principe, and things there were much better than they were at Principe. Since I was unable to reach Cheap Caribbean from the Principe on Friday evening, when we most needed their help, I tried again to call them on Saturday morning from our new resort, Barcelo. Again, I listened to music for at least 10 minutes before hanging up. I sent an email to inform them of the fact that we had to change resorts, and then on Sunday, when we met our Amstar representative to discuss ground transportation arrangements, he was able to put me in touch with a Destination Specialist at Cheap Caribbean. I firmly believe, though, that the only reason the Amstar rep (Roger) got through is because he has a dedicated line on which to call in. I will not consider Principe resorts after this experience, and I am also bothered that I was not able to get in touch with anyone at Cheap Caribbean when I most needed their assistance. I wonder if they would have been able to negotiate a better price at Barcelo than what I had to pay. In spite of the fact that Principe did refund our money since we did not stay there, the additional expense we incurred by staying at Barcelo makes me feel like we paid for two vacations but only took one. That's not exactly "cheap caribbean".

Great stay!

Really enjoyed our stay at this resort, it was right on the beach, the service was great and the people were very friendly. The resort was very well staffed and had ample transportation carts that circled through the resort. We left our room key in the room and called up the front lobby and someone brought us a key within minutes! The food was good, had no real complaints- was buffet style so was what you expected. would definitely stay again! The Mayan ruins were about 20 mins away so that was very convienent as well as other excursions and were moderately priced. The transport with Amstar was reliable and made easy, would recommend. For 50 dollars round trip it was a good deal- the resort is about 60-90 mins away from the airport so it was nice to have that arranged prior to the vacation. Overall very nice stay! Rooms were clean and people were great!

Birthday Vacation in Mexico gone awry (sad face)

I stayed at the Grand Bahia Principe Tulum resort in Riviera Maya. What I learned about Tulum: (1) At the Tulum resort -- when changing rooms, you pack up your belongings, surrender your hotel keys by 11am and go without access to your belongings until 3pm. Which is the time of check-in. (2) Tulum over-books their resort almost every day. Even if you have a reservation, it's like the resort hopes-n-prays that someone arrives late/leaves early, that way there are enough rooms for everyone. (3) The Privilege Club staff at Tulum. They are fast talkers, and if you don't listen carefully, what they promise is Not what they write on your contract. (4) The resort concierge was less than thrilled to work with me when I needed to re-book return flight. And the Hospitality staff followed suit. BUT this guy named Aws (sp?) jumped in and was more than happy to help us. Big shout-out to Aws!!!!!!! What I enjoyed: the resort swim-up bar and the golf carts to get you around the resort property. It was raining inside our hotel room due to severe ceiling water damage. The only way to fix this problem was maintenance staff turned off the a/c unit. There was no way we were going to sleep in a humid room with no air condition. So they gave us a key to a vacant room to check it out first. When we opened the door, clearly the room was not vacant! When we went back to the front desk, the staff were perplexed as their system showed that room was vacant. Another room is identified. Now that the rain started, the bellhop never showed-up to move our bags. So we moved them ourselves, in the rain. Since this room was a downgrade, we switched rooms the next day. If you lost count, that's 3 rooms in 18 hours. At Tulum, the Privilege Club staff member Ellis is a character. It was my birthday, he told me would include a massage. However when he wrote the contract, he crossed it out. I'll give him credit, because he knows how to fast-talk And distract, so you don't realize how badly you were hustled, until you try and collect on your massage. This vacation was a birthday celebration and unfortunately spent more time with the resort travel agent trying to fix our reservation, then at the swim-up bar. Bright side: at least birthdays are every year?! Oh well.....

Hotel Description

Grand Bahia Principe Tulum: The All Inclusive Way to Go Green

Cortez spent his life searching for the Lost Cities of Gold. Too bad he didn't know about all-inclusive; he might have given up and settled for Gran Bahia Principe Tulum. In the midst of the Mayan rainforest, Grand Bahia Principe Tulum, Riviera Maya, inspired by the Puuc Mayan architectural period, was developed with environmental concerns in mind. The resort has carefully maintained the natural order of the beaches, surrounding countryside and foliage. They've taken all-inclusive and gone green.

Whether it's the lake-style pools, there are three, or swimming with the dolphins, water is a big part of this resort. Opt for the terrace to work on your tan, or hit the picture-perfect beach to lounge as the waves lull you into an afternoon nap.

Guests of Grand Bahia Principe Tulum enjoy the amenities at sister resort Grand Bahia Principe Coba, as well as in their home resort. A commercial center and the Hacienda Dona Isabel entertainment center are located within the complex for easy shopping. And they've spared no expense in creating an oasis of relaxation, like a spa that offers a delicious Mayan Chocolate Dreams treatment, a body-exfoliating, massage experience that ends with a moisturizing cream to prepare the skin for tanning.

Grab your safari hat and explore the nearby Mayan ruins of Tulum with the kids, or seek out a cave-diving expedition at one of the nearby cenotes, where you'll be guided through freshwater sinkholes, deep in the ancient caverns of the Mayan Riviera.
