You love jetting off with your besties, but, sometimes, a solo vacay is just what you need to unwind and reconnect with yourself. Traveling on your own is a great way to experience the world, and some of the best (and safest) Caribbean islands to visit are just a quick flight away from major U.S. airports! With a few practical tips, you can have a fun and safe Caribbean island trip that’s all about what you need.

5 Safe Solo Travel Strategies for the Caribbean

Having a safe and fun solo vacation takes a bit of planning, but the rewards are worth the effort. Before heading off on your Caribbean island adventure, take time to determine where you’ll go, what you’ll see, where you’ll stay, and how you’ll get around. It’s best to select accommodations in popular, easy-to-reach neighborhoods with a good vibe and easy access to your preferred mode of transportation. Once your itinerary is all set, keep close friends and family in the loop so someone will know where you are and how to reach you each day1.

1. Dress Like a Local

It’s important to know how to dress before you start packing—and we don’t just mean picking cute swimwear. Some communities may be more conservative than others, and longer sleeves might be appropriate in certain places or situations2. The locals will appreciate how considerate you are of their community and culture, and if nothing else, dressing like a local will help you blend in.

2. Know Your Travel Tools

Be sure to find out if your favorite ride-share app can be used in your destination. Uber, Grab, and Bolt are good choices since you can follow your journey in real time and share important information with others, so they’ll know you’re safe. Remember to verify the driver’s identity and confirm the license plate number before getting in the car. Have a map app with real-time tracking open on your phone when you get in the car, so you know your driver is taking you in the right direction2.

For extra peace of mind, take advantage of the Amstar services that come with your CheapCaribbean booking. We’re talking airport transfer services, local tour guides for excursions, and expert support at your destination.

3. Secure Your Room

Your hotel room’s deadbolt might seem like a tiny detail, but it’s crucial to make it part of your safety routine. Make sure it’s always engaged when you’re in the room. You can also bring gadgets, like a rubber doorstop or door alarms, to ensure no one breaks in. No worries if you don’t have these extra tools—you always can put a chair against the door once you’re in for the night3.

4. Know the Names of Helpful People

It’s always a good idea to get the business cards of your hotel’s concierge or a helpful (and trustworthy) taxi driver. These local experts can offer good advice, whether you’re looking for dining recommendations or advice on activities—remember that they want you to enjoy your visit4! The more people who know you, the more people you’ll have looking out for you and making sure you’re safe while you’re having fun3.

5. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Whether you’re hiking in the mountains, relaxing on a beach or exploring historic sites in an ancient city, it’s always good to be aware of what’s happening around you. Keep your belongings close and try not to display any valuables you brought. And if something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and move away or ask someone trustworthy for help1.

Where to Go and What to Do

There are loads of safe and exciting places to explore in the Caribbean, and going alone means you can spend as much time as you like doing just what you want to do.

All-inclusive resorts are a great option for solo travel. Depending on the kind of package you opt for, the upfront cost includes your accommodation, meals, beverages and even some activities. You’ll also be with lots of other people visiting from somewhere else, so you can make new friends in the restaurants or during activities.

Mexico

In Mexico, Cancún has lots of all-inclusive resorts that make it easy to unwind on the beach or practice your golf swing on top-tier courses. For the perfect combination of relaxation and high-energy nightlife with plenty of opportunities to mix and mingle, we can’t recommend Cancun and Tulum enough. Not only do you get everything resort life has to offer, but you can also explore ancient archeological sites and thrilling natural wonders.

For a more laid-back vibe, consider Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo, two destinations just four miles apart that offer wonderfully unique options. Ixtapa has high-rise hotels, all-inclusive resorts, fine dining and shopping, while Zihuatanejo has art shops, boutique hotels and casual restaurants serving seafood caught that day.

Jamaica

Some parts of Jamaica have a rough reputation, but the island is absolutely worth a visit for its history, cuisine (don’t miss out on the oxtail soup!) and famous beaches. Just stay on the main roads and in more populated areas when you’re on your own. If you’re up for an adventure, consider exploring some of the caves, like those in the Green Grotto, Cockpit Country or Bunker's Hill.

And while the beaches are a must-see, be sure to try rafting on the Martha Brae River or seeing the bioluminescence at Glistening Waters in Trelawny. Want to go chasing waterfalls? Check out Reggae Falls in St. Thomas, Reach Falls in Portland or Falling Edge Waterfalls in St. Andrew4.

Belize

Belize is a great pick for wellness-focused travel. Ambergris Caye, the country’s most popular island, has well-patrolled beaches and lots of women-friendly accommodations. The Placencia Peninsula is a hidden gem covering 16 miles of coastline away from the crowds6.
