When it comes to your Caribbean dream vacay, St. Lucia is a paradise for any type of traveler. If you’re looking to plan a romantic getaway, a family-friendly adventure or a long-awaited trip with your BFFs, this island nation is a treasure trove of stunning landscapes and must-see activities. Lush rainforests, sparkling waters, and volcanic beaches will be your backdrop as you hike the majestic Pitons and take in the vibrant Creole culture. Next stop, one of the top Caribbean destinations—St. Lucia!

Get to Know St. Lucia

What is St. Lucia Like?

Before you go, we’ll give you a primer on everything you need to know to make the most of your stay. St. Lucia is located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, neighboring St. Martinique 24 miles to the north and St. Vincent 21 miles to the south1.

The island’s heritage is a Creole blend of African, French, and British influences. You’ll see this rich cultural blend in the rhythmic Afro-Caribbean and European folk music, delicious cuisine and colorful celebrations and festivals. English is the official language, but many locals speak a French patois called Kwéyòl or Patois2.

The island experiences warm, tropical weather year-round. Late spring to early summer offers pleasant temperatures of 70 to 80°F. December to April is the driest season and the most popular time to visit, so if you’re visiting during peak season, be prepared for crowds escaping the chilly winter weather back home3.

What Should You Bring to St. Lucia?

When you’re packing, make sure you have all your documents and essentials ready to go. You’ll need a passport valid for the duration of your stay, plus proof of your return ticket upon entering the country. In the first 72 hours of your stay, you’ll also need to fill out an electronic immigration form detailing your itinerary and contact information.

Pack casual clothes and swimsuits for warm weather. If you’re planning to hike, bring a good pair of sneakers or hiking shoes. Don’t forget to bring cash! The currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC$). Most major businesses will take cards, and many vendors will take U.S. dollars, but it’s a good idea to have the local currency on hand. You might also need to buy a converter and plug adapter to power your electronics and personal care devices. St. Lucia uses a higher voltage (220-240V)3.

Top Reasons to Visit St. Lucia

Your St. Lucia vacation is sure to be unforgettable, no matter what your plans look like. But if you need some help sorting through all your options, here are our top choices.

Hiking Gros Piton & Tet Paul Nature Trail

No St. Lucia itinerary is complete without a trip to the Pitons. These two dormant volcanic spires are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an iconic part of the island4. Located on the southwest coast, they rise directly out of the water. You can hike Gros Piton, the taller mountain, or take a boat tour to catch a close-up view of these natural wonders. A boat tour may be the better option for families with little ones or older adults, as the Gros Piton hike can be physically challenging.

For a more family-friendly trek, try the Tet Paul Nature Trail. This 1.5-mile trail takes just 45 minutes. It’s one of the easiest hikes on the island and offers spectacular views of lush rainforests, the Caribbean Sea, and the Pitons5.

Exploring Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens & Mineral Baths

Located in historic Soufrière, this relaxing park allows you to stroll through beautiful tropical foliage and flowers, spot local wildlife, soak in the therapeutic hot springs, and view the majestic Diamond Waterfall. The mixture of rainwater and volcanic minerals in the water makes the falls flow different colors throughout the year6.

Finding Handcrafted Treasures at Castries Market

The capital of St. Lucia, Castries, features a grand open-air market with vendors selling everything from aromatic spices and fresh produce to handmade jewelry and local crafts. Stop by for a snack and some souvenir shopping7.

Relaxing at the Beach

St. Lucia is brimming with gorgeous public beaches. Take your family, besties, and boo to bask in the sparkling sands and turquoise waters. Some of the most popular beaches include Pigeon Island Beach, Anse Chastanet and Anse Mamin, Sugar Beach, Marigot Bay, and Reduit Beach.

Joining the Jump Up

Still looking for fun after the sun sets? The Gros Islet Jump Up (or Friday Night Street Party) is the hot spot to be every Friday, rain or shine. Once the streets of Gros Islet are closed to traffic, the DJs turn up the music, and local food and drink vendors set up shop7.

Dance to reggae, soca, and zouk, and savor authentic Caribbean BBQ, fresh seafood, jerk chicken, rum punch, and Piton beer.

While the beginning of the evening is family-friendly, the noise, crowds, and overall vibe are more adult-oriented starting from around 9 p.m.
