Such a fun girls' trip
Our week at Viva was filled with so much fun, great memories and lots of new friends made! My understanding of the resort was that it had newly been reopened since Dorian hit the Bahamas, but walking into the resort you would have never guessed something like that struck the area because it was so beautiful. CHECK-IN: Our flight had arrived at 12pm and none of the guests were allowed to check-in until 3pm (this was the only negative experience of this trip if there had to be one) we were however welcomed to help ourselves to the restaurant during our wait and Sunwing hosted their information session in this time span to kill time for the newly arriving guests. ROOM: We had a room that was probably the furthest away from the beach with no ocean view (which was no issue at all as our views were beautiful palm trees and plants), and near the gym, staff living quarters, archery/tennis court. It was about a 5minute walk to the beach everyday but we didn't complain as it was a beautiful walk to the beach everyday (and further along in the week we would run into all staff we would make friends with, which made our walk even more fun) BEACH: gorgeous. the sand was so soft and white, so many palm trees for shade if needed, plenty of beach chairs for everyone (I also visited during off-season, so I think this may also be a reason why), so many water activities to do. The water was so clear & blue, probably the clearest waters I have ever seen. The clear waters helped navigate which areas were better to swim around (as there are some patches that are rocky). Regardless, the beach is beautiful and felt endless. STAFF: from the minute we step foot into the resort to the moment we left, the staff was amazing. They were so approachable, friendly, and knowledgeable. Although check-in was a bit of a wait, the staff was very empathetic and calm which made me not worry so much and/or get too frustrated. The lifeguard, servers and bartenders were AWESOME! So lively, so fun, so kind, taught us so much about island life & Bahamians. The entertainment staff was amazing also, never have I ever felt genuine enthusiasm from any entertainment staff in all my travels to other resorts. This team really enjoy their jobs. They were all very great at convincing people to join in games and activities (but not in a pushy way which was nice). I loved watching their shows in the evenings, super entertaining!!!! My only wish would be to add some more acts/entertainment that relates to Bahamian culture! I'm sure a lot of guests would love too see more Bahamian performances :) OVERALL EXPERIENCE: The staff and locals we met on this trip were all so kind and genuine. They really were the reasons as to why we had such a fun girls trip. I definitely plan on coming back. And when I do I hope to run into all of the people we met on this trip again. Thank you to Linden, Anton & Kevin for showing us around the island! We learned a lot from you and how Bahamians like to have fun/eat! Thank you to Stevenson & Latina for being great bartenders and having fun with us! And Thank you Ziko, Flor, Pina & Charlee for dancing with us every night and pulling us on stage during the shows in the evenings!! You all made this trip one to remember forever :)
INCREDIBLE FAMILY EXPERIENCE
PLEASE BE SAFE my new friends! WISHES FOR TIME TO STAND STILL IN PARADISE FOR YOU ALL UNTIL THIS CRAZINESS ENDS. Well, prior to this trip I read the reviews. Our week was the last week prior to the Covid-19 craziness so it may not be entirely reflective of other peoples' trips. I believe we were the second last flight to Canada from Freeport. We truly enjoyed our trip but I do understand the mixed reviews. ROOMS- we had the experience of moving rooms because I felt too far from the action. The first room was the 'rough room'. It needed some TLC but did have the necessities. The second room was beautiful! What the heck? Inconsistency in rooms is the reason for the mixed reviews. The showers had hot water for 2 teenagers and 2 adults every evening- my son had to give me a lesson on how to use the shower knob but hot water was had by all at all times. All rooms have nice views, I don't think there's a room without an ocean view. Although our room was as close as possible to the pool, we slept well. The air conditioner drowned out the night noise. POOL- People commented on the water being cold at the pool. I understand the weather was a tad chilly prior to our week, maybe that's the reason...? I didn't find it cold (and I'm a whuss). Nice chaise lounges with many big umbrellas... better than most places we've been. BEACH- The beach is beautiful! There are rocks in the water, that's true, but that gives fish a place to show off and hide! I love to snorkel but hate gross things touching my feet in the water... this beach had the best of both worlds. The water was so clear that I could see where the rocks were... I just went to the area where sand started in the shallow area until I could swim. No gross things touching me! However, if the water was more rough, maybe you can't see as well. We saw starfish/seastars, many fish (including 5 invasive lionfish!👿), but the highlight was an octopus! I've snorkelled all over the caribbean but this was my first octopus. CAR RENTAL- Our kids are older now and when in safer locations, we have started renting a car for a day. (The Bahamas was linked to Briton prior to independence so this is a left side driving country 😉 Try it). We got out car from the resort lobby. These have been the best learning experiences for all of us. We were in LosCabos shortly after their hurricane and our eyes were opened to the destruction that could happen. Dorian did a real wallop on this gem of an island too. The destruction is seen across the entire length. The Lucayan Market is a cute tourist area but it is a sharp contrast to the rest of the island. There are vast areas of driving where there is nothing but broken trees and debris. A small life jacket high in a tree was a little humbling for me. I enjoy seeing the real life of a destination as well as the resort pool and drinks. SHELLING- Ok, I'm a shelling nut. I've got my 14 year old son as crazy as I am so this is my love! The beaches here are in-freaking-credible! First off, they are crystal sand and clear as glass water. I'm not new to the Caribbean but these beaches were by far the most incredible I've experienced. The first was Gold Rock m Beach. It's part of a conservation area and wooden boardwalk takes you through the mangroves directly onto the beach. Breathtaking! We found sea biscuits here... lots. We chose 2 each and grinned all the way back to the car. I wish I brought our snorkel. The second beach is very close to the resort, Barbary Beach, this was an adventure to find. There were downed trees in some areas but tires had made paths around the tree so we followed... and found another breathtaking beach. Here we found shells I've never found before. A cowrie! Huge horse conch, murex(lots), and many I haven't researched yet. This beach has the same beautiful sand but in some areas were long grooved rock. Perfect for catching interesting things to see. SHOWS- Awesome. Definitely another highlight. Ziko and Pinky. I've been thinking of you and how you're both doing in this craziness. I hope you are well and safe. Food- I love fish. Had it every night but with different sauce. I was in heaven. There were ribs, pork, fried chicken, pasta- lasagne was great!, I honestly can't complain about the food. People must cook gourmet at home because I was impressed with this being a buffet! I loved this resort but I also loved this island. I will be back! With my own snorkel this time!
This hotel was horrible, our room on the 1st floor had broken doors and a toilet that over flowed every other time we flushed. On the second day they came to our room and told us they were charging us $500 for a plastic outdoor chair that disappeared while we went to the beach. We know of 3 other 1 st floor rooms that they attempted to do this to! The management staff was rude, laughed at us as we complained and insisted that we lost the chair. As you will see in other reviews, this is a scheme they are using to get xtra $. I travel the world w/ my family, we like the Wyndham brand. I’m amazed the Wyndham brands is associated with such an obviously horrible run hotel that has a regular scheme to charge for chairs...we know the staff removed from our 1st floor balcony. SHAME ON YOU MANAGEMENT STAFF!!!
Good food bad swimming.
The food was 4 star. The animation team and the bar tenders were great. This is a resort that tries to get you to buy into a time share. They don't have servers bringing you drinks unless you're in the VIP section. The internet sucks unless you're in a VIP room where they have stronger reception. The beach is wonderful but the ocean is full of rocks and seaweed. They do have a nice pool. We did sit for a presentation for a time share. They were your best friends until we said no. They wouldn't even look at us lol. Fyi the payments they quoted us for a time share was at 13.8 per cent!!!
The Entertainment Staff Earn 5 Stars*****
One of the few resorts I have been at, where the entertainment staff take the time to get to know you beyond just a friendly hello in passing. Overall the resort was clean, the food was great and the number of activities were in abundance. The only downfall to my last comment is how spread out the activities was in proximity to the center of the resort. I specifically enjoyed my interactions with Charlee Barron, who I met after complimenting her on one of her tap routines. She was so passionate about her craft and I am glad we got to meet her! Ziko is by far once of the sweetest-most genuine people there, I enjoyed him joining us for lunch and learning more about him and what brought him to Viva! So impressed with him and would go back just knowing they would be there!
