Our Experience at Unico 20°87° – 7 Days of Relaxation and Fun!
My partner and I got back from 7 days at Unico 20°87° about a month ago, and we had such a great time! Here's a breakdown of our experience: From the moment we arrived — late Thursday evening — the staff took amazing care of us. We were greeted with welcome drinks, cold towels (much needed), and incredibly friendly service from the porter and front desk. Check-in was smooth, and we were told we had $1,500 in resort credits (which we were expecting). Since we agreed to accept them, they let us know someone would contact us in the morning to set up a meeting. We were taken to our swim-up room, which was in a perfect location — close to the entrance, spa, and fitness center. That first night, we grabbed a late dinner at Cueva Siete around 9 PM with no trouble getting a table. The only downside was the early phone call we got the next morning about the presentation meeting. Since we’d arrived late, we were hoping to sleep in, but our room phone rang at 8:30 AM. We met with Yicel, who arranged our presentation appointment and activated our resort credits. She reassured us it would be just 90 minutes in exchange for the credits. We met Jose for breakfast before the presentation. He gave us a tour of the upgraded rooms and exclusive areas, then brought us to the presentation area, where we met with three other reps to discuss the membership options. We didn’t sign up, as we’re not interested, but we were glad the team wasn’t overly pushy — we were done in just over 100 minutes. (Way better than the time we were trapped for 3 hours at a different resort!) In exchange, we got a couple’s massage and a hot stone massage at a discounted rate — definitely worth it if you’re okay giving up a bit of time. Yicel also connected us with Aguirre, who became our go-to guy for dinner reservations, excursions, and spa bookings. He was prompt, friendly, and super helpful. We were celebrating our 10-year anniversary, and he even arranged for a beautiful rose and card to be left in our room. That thoughtful touch really meant a lot to us! We split our days between the quiet pool and the middle pool (not the party one). We absolutely loved our server, Raymundo. He was fast, kind, and always smiling — he even spotted us in our swim-up pool one day and brought us drinks there! Look for him if you go. Our spa services were incredible! Big shoutout to Percil, Oscar, and Mari — we were floating after our massages. The only minor issue was that my partner and I had very different hydrotherapy experiences. He was given access to the sauna, cold shower, and steam room, while I was only shown the warm bed and had to request sauna access. Hopefully that can be improved with more consistency. Our room was spacious, beautiful, and overall very comfortable — except at night. It felt like the airflow or A/C turned off, because we woke up hot and uncomfortable a few times. We tried adjusting the settings but didn’t have much luck. That aside, the swim-up feature was amazing and the room was cleaned and restocked daily. The food was another highlight! We especially loved the Italian and Mexican restaurants. The buffet turns into a steakhouse at night, which was also great — although they were out of a few items during our stay. La Unica was our go-to for lunch — amazing tacos and nachos — and the pizza place is a must! On departure day, they helped with our bags and ensured we got the proper transportation, which was appreciated. We were asked one more time about purchasing a special return promotion (we were also asked after the presentation), which we declined. Not our favorite way to end the trip, but they weren’t overly pushy. All in all, we would absolutely love to go back — especially when it’s not seaweed season! (They did warn us about this, so it wasn’t a surprise — just a bit stinky after the rain.) The resort has lots of wildlife, which was fun to see, and the overall vibe was welcoming, relaxing, and beautiful.

Unico
Took good care of us. They reserved our place by the pool every morning and sent me a picture to show us. We changed our dinner reservation several times and they took care of it. We were advised of the happening each and if we needed reservations they took care of it. We will be back in September.

Beautiful Resort with Outstanding Dining and Service, but Rooms Need Updating
As a travel advisor, I recently had the opportunity to do a site visit at this resort with my 19-year-old daughter, and while there were many standout elements that make this property worth visiting, there are also some areas that fell short—especially considering it’s marketed as a luxury boutique resort. Arrival & First Impressions – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (10/10) From the moment we pulled up, the resort made a stunning first impression. We were greeted with a refreshing cold towel and their signature cucumber drink before being quickly and professionally checked in. Our butler was introduced immediately, and the entire arrival process was seamless. The lobby is absolutely breathtaking, with a modern Moroccan-Boho vibe and an incredible signature scent diffused throughout the main areas. A perfect start to our stay. Butler Service – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½ (8.5/10) Our butler, Axel, was friendly and professional, especially toward the end of our stay. However, there were a couple of missteps that left a lasting impression. We were never given our pillow or aromatherapy selections, despite requesting them and receiving acknowledgment. It was disappointing that these were not followed up on. Room & Accommodations – ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (6/10) This was the biggest letdown. We stayed in Building 6, room 6408 and were hit with a very strong mildew smell upon entering—stronger than what’s typical for Caribbean humidity. The room felt worn and poorly maintained. Walls were dirty, ceilings had visible water damage, and there was heavy condensation dripping from the AC vent, leaving the floor wet and slippery at times. Furniture, decor pillows and linens were stained, rugs were disheveled, and surfaces had not been thoroughly cleaned. Closet doors were warped, the barn bathroom door wouldn’t stay open, and the only mirror was in the bathroom—very inconvenient. The air conditioning shut off during the night, leaving us hot and uncomfortable. Perhaps most frustrating were the paper-thin walls and floors—we were woken up several times by footsteps above us. This area truly needs updating and attention to match the standard of the rest of the resort. In my research and from what I can see there have been no updates to the resort besides one of the pools since they opened. Pool & Daytime Vibe – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½ (9/10) The pools and layout are well-designed. We stayed mostly at the “rowdy” pool, though it wasn’t rowdy at all—more quiet and laid back. The DJ that played every other day was a highlight, and we wish that had been a daily experience. This is more of a calm, couples-style resort with limited organized activities beyond cycling, aerobics, and volleyball. If you’re looking for lively entertainment, this might not be your place. Some areas around the pool could use a bit of maintenance, and we did spot some litter (Zyn tobacco pouches) floating in the pool on a couple of occasions. Dining – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (10/10) Every meal we had at the restaurants was fantastic! Being able to make reservations prior to arrival is a huge plus. The Italian restaurant was our favorite. Food and presentation were excellent across the board. Bars & Drinks – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (10/10) Cocktails were crafted beautifully, and the bar staff was consistently attentive. The hotel bar was one of the highlights of our stay. Coffee Shop – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (10/10) We loved grabbing coffee and pastries from the on-site café each morning. Excellent quality and service! Nighttime Entertainment – ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (6/10) This is one area where the resort really fell flat. Nightlife is minimal and feels like an afterthought. While there’s a singer in the lobby and a DJ after 10 PM, very few guests participated. By 10 PM, most guests seemed to be winding down for bed. There are no evening shows or outdoor events, and we were disappointed by the lack of options to enjoy after dinner. Service – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½ (9/10) Overall, the staff were warm, kind, and accommodating. Service was slow at times, but we were always greeted with a smile and a willingness to help. Grounds & Landscaping – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (10/10) The grounds are beautifully maintained, to bad we saw the zyn tobacco pouches in the grass areas as well. Every morning and afternoon, we saw staff trimming, planting, and keeping the property pristine. This level of care did not go unnoticed. Room Service – ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (6/10) We only ordered once, and unfortunately the burger I requested well-done arrived very undercooked, med-rare. Fries were tasty, but it was disappointing to receive a meal that couldn’t be eaten. Would I recommend it to clients? Yes—but with specific expectations. It’s ideal for couples seeking a quiet, romantic escape with great food and drinks, but not for those wanting nightlife or newly refreshed rooms.

5-Star Accomodations
The service and accommodations were top notch the whole stay. The only issue was the diffuser to illuminate the scents we chose but was fixed our last day. Eduardo was our host quickly tended to all request. We’ll definitely be back and look forward to having him as our host.

Great couples getaway
Unico Riviera Maya was wonderful !! The staff was exceptional!! Food was fantastic!! Pools were great! So many onsite activities and lots of suggestions for excursions near the resort. The Spa was amazing, too!! We stayed in a standard room but it was very large and beautifully decorated. Terrace had nice seating area and a great whirlpool. Well stocked mini bar with a variety of drinks and snacks. Air conditioning in the room was not great- even set at 60 degrees the room was warm.
