Worst holiday for many years
We chose TRS Coral as we were informed the TRS Palladium chain are supposedly one of the top in the world. Our stay was from 17 March to 27 March. I will break down our recent hotel experiences into 3 parts; 1. Hotel services We weren’t informed prior to leaving that the hotel had started to reduce its services, however immediately upon arrival we were told that some restaurants would be closed, and that the evening theatre entertainment would be stopping very soon. In fact we were advised to book the Chic show ($40 extra charge) as soon as possible as it would imminently close. Day by day services diminished with more and more restaurant closures, reduced entertainment etc, until there was just one restaurant open on TRS side (Helios). The daily activities stopped soon after arrival, in fact I asked where the water bikes would be, and told normally in the main pool but not happening now. This was apparent from day 1. About 3/4 days before departure furniture was being removed from the pool area, whilst guests attempting to relax. Ironically though, given all the services that were closed, the pool hotel shop remained open even to our day of departure. Seemed to us it was like, ok we’ll close the pre-paid services but let’s leave open anything guests could pay extra for. This included Cabanas by the pool, and even spa services were available almost to the end of our stay. To summarise the above, I feel the hotel should have made our travel company aware that services were being reduced, so we could have had the option to cancel or a price reduction if we continued to go. Before we left the U.K. I kept a close eye on the Mexican Government visitor advisory, with nothing changing throughout our stay, to say hotels locking down etc. The reason they did what they did is because occupancy had reduced to virtually zero as we left, but was clearly on the way down before we got there and during our stay. I think I’m right in saying that in any other event where a hotel’s services are reducing, the client is pre-informed. 2. Room issues Upon arrival to our designated room, it was clear there was a damp smell. (I had previously heard of this on trip advisor but chose to ignore as I felt there were just a few isolated cases, out of hundreds of rooms). The following day we were trying to relax on the patio listening to construction noise! In the meantime the butler had given us an air freshener to help with the smell of damp. We decided enough was enough and complained. We were offered a room change to the other side of the hotel, however after speaking with the head butler, was given an upgrade to a loft room. All very nice, but again a damp room! The top floor was fine, it was the ground floor that stank of damp. We didn’t see any point in complaining further as we didn’t want to seem ungrateful, and furthermore this could be a hotel wide problem. The room was so damp, a paperback book became warped, and my cigars were as if they were in a humidor! 3. Hotel staff I have to say that in general the hotel staff were excellent, however we had an incident with front of house at the Thai restaurant. As mentioned earlier, every day there were less and less restaurants to choose from. One particular day the butler asked us what restaurant out of a short list we’d like that evening. We chose the Thai, however could only have either 6.30 or 9pm. I decided to take up the offer of the head butler Arturo, and requested he try to get us in at our preferred time 8pm. Later that afternoon the butler called to say that we could go at 8pm, but the service may be slower as we had been squeezed in. It’s worth pointing out at this stage that all restaurants had hand sanitizer at the podiums, which all guests were expected to apply before entry. Upon arrival at the restaurant, and approaching the podium we naturally sanitized first, and upon giving our room number, the hostess and maitre D had a brief conversation which didn’t seem favourable to us even though it was in Spanish. We were given dirty looks by the pair, and then told by the maitre d to go to the bathroom and wash our hands. We assumed at this time, this was an additional measure all guests were being asked. We were taken to our table which was in the centre of the restaurant directly opposite the podium. During our stay approximately 8-10 parties arrived to dine, and not one was asked to wash hands. I complained initially to the restaurant and then to another head butler who couldn’t believe the way we were treated. She promised to come back to me after investigating what went on. She never did. She did however offer us a spa treatment as an apology which we took the following day which happened to be my wife’s birthday, along with another paid for treatment. I’d pre arranged with the butler a cabana for her birthday ($190 surcharge). We arrived at the pool after the spa treatments only to find the cabana was set up between the bar and another cabana with 6 noisy youngsters swearing and shouting, also boasting they got the cabana free, when there were 3 free cabanas opposite. The cabana ended up not being used and management informed I wasn’t paying. There were other guests complaining about this young group too including the loud music they continued to play even after they were told to turn it off! The whole issue left my wife incredibly upset. I messaged the head butler to complain, who claimed the reason the group were given the cabana free, was they’d booked for the following day, and they weren’t getting any services on the cabana that day. The following day the group were nowhere to be seen! As time went on the standards started to slip further including one particular meal we had at the “ El Nui “ restaurant. My wife’s fishcake starter had plastic inside. She pointed it out to the waiter who took it and apologised. But no visit from the restaurant manager or chef to apologise. The tuna for main course she ordered medium, it came up raw. The waiter took it back to cook more, and when brought back it was just as raw. In addition the plastic glasses in that restaurant were cracked and discoloured like something you’d expect in a 3* hotel. In general the food was underwhelming. Nowhere near the standard of other 5* Mexican hotels we’ve been to for example. The wine was extremely poor, like vinegar in some instances. To summarise, despite no restrictions from the Mexican government, the hotel decided to cut services on the basis that no new clients were arriving whilst we were there. There was no offer to cancel beforehand, and I would certainly not be complaining if, like the U.K. these institutions were forced to close / cut services but they weren’t. This was purely a numbers issue, and so far no rebate has been offered.
amazing TRS return
We stayed at the TRS Coral at the end of January for 10 days. This was our third stay at this property, and we return for the incredible amenities, the amazing staff, and the extraordinary atmosphere. We have traveled to other TRS properties,( Yucatan) as well as to other properties in Mexico and the Carribbean (Palladium, Riu, Iberostar, Secrets, Dreams, Bahia Principe) but the Coral is absolutely our top destination. Our superstar butlers (Hector and Indira) made this stay amazing. Hector arranged a fantastic anniversary dinner for my husband and I, and prepared our suite with a special dessert, bottle of champagne, bubble bath, rose petals, and mood music on the evening of our anniversary.. These special details were appreciated. Hector was always attentive and ready to assist, never overlooking details, including securing arrangements for private transport to the airport. Other notable staff include Marco and Carlos at Gaucho restaurant, the Maitre 'D at Tapeo, Edwin, Inez, and Cruz at Helios (a special shoutout to Edwin, who brought a sparkle to our lunches and dinners at Helios). The fitness facility and spa are one of the main reasons we keep returning to this property. The gym is well equipped, beautifully maintained, and the spa (hydrotherapy section) is absolutely stunning. We will return to the TRS Coral as soon as possible, after the travel restrictions due to Covid are lifted. We enjoy the beautiful beach, as it is clean and relatively free of seaweed, which is a persistent problem in the RIviera Maya. Can't wait to return and to see our friends, especially Senor Rodrigo Valenzuela, whose attention to detail in our room request was much appreciated. Sending everyone at the TRS Coral our best wishes of health and wellness, and looking forward to seeing everyone there soon.

One of the best hotels we have ever been to
We stayed here a few weeks back, before the Coronavirus situation got bad. Our stay at the hotel was out of this world. From the moment we arrived, the service was spectacular. Our butlers, Alicia and Adrian, catered for all our needs, even the ones we didnt think of! For my husbands birthday, they kindly left us a cake, bottle of champagne and balloons. The food in all the restaurants on the TRS Coral side was amazing and the servers were incredibly attentive. Pedro and Reyes at the a la carte breakfast restaurant were superb and very friendly. We went to the sports bar numerous times, where the food and cocktails were delicious. Our waitress, Miroslava, was incredibly sweet and did an amazing job for a trainee. We would 100% recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to Mexico and hope to go back there ourselves one day.
Wonderful vacation during the start of a pandemic
We were the last group before the resort shut down for the Corona virus and were treated like royalty as most vacationers stayed home. We chose not to stay home and hoard toilet paper and missed the first week of mayhem in the states. Best decision of my life. The staff and facilities were top notch and couldn’t thank you enough for your hospitality. Unfortunately a lot of the live entertainment was told to stay home and that was the only disappointment but was totally understood. Thank you again for a memorable stay. Your staff was wonderful and I hope to see them all again someday soon.
