...And again! Best week ever!
Not a lot of new comments! STILL the best place in the world, to me! This year we were there March 11-March 16, 2020. Early days of Covid outbreak. We saw a lot of updates and improvements since last year. The new family building looks beautiful, overlooking the Cenote! We received the usual EXCEPTIONAL care we have come to expect from the staff! Our beautiful Vicky (Virginia) at the Brazil restaurant, along with Enrique and Victor! They actually all recognized us from last year, and Enrique even remembered our names from a full year before! This place would not be the same without those three humans! We met a new favorite bartender, Leoncio, at the Select Club bar at the beach! Never forgot an order! My husband was trying to watch his sugar intake, and Leoncio always remembered that his drinks were to be made without simple syrup! We left the day before the Covid-19 closing. We are so grateful for the seven perfect days we got to spend with everyone there. It was unfortunate that the Sunday street market had to be cancelled for safety precaution reasons, but we can't wait for next time! We love you very much Vicky, Enrique and Victor! We hope you will still be around when we can come back! All our love, George and Dora
Beautiful grounds, lovely people. Could be so much more as eco resort.
We were super excited to find an eco resort with a fully vegan restaurant on the premises. We enjoyed the adult beach and pool area with hot tub. The activities and shows were fun and high quality. We were glad they have some rescue animals and dont use them for photo ops. As vegans and environmentally minded people however we were rather disappointed. There must be a lot of food waste as all the restaurant buffets seem overful (only the Italian seemed mindful of portions), plus the snack bars are overloaded. Even the Saturday night show had an eating area that had tons of food laid out. There's no need for so much food for every meal at every restaurant plus outside and throughout the day. Salvia (fully vegan) had a gorgeous view, and a few nice and some average items that could use enhancing, but it was a limited menu so we ventured out. Other restaurants had no clue of how to make vegan food and were apologetic. The Mexican place had 4 items designated amongst a hundred or more, why do vegetable dishes need a sprinkle of cheese or bacon?! The Italian one made a sincere effort to accomodate us, but chopped up unmarinated, raw tofu is NOT 'tofu cheese' lol. I don't know if we'd go back unless they ramp up their efforts to be eco friendly and change their menus. They need to invite vegan chefs and vegan food bloggers to rework the menus and train the chefs. It's such a wasted opportunity. People could see how tasty vegan food can be, instead its disappointing even for vegans.
Beautiful place !
I have to say we didn’t expect much of this hotel after reading mixed reviews but how wrong we were :) this trip was our seventh in Mexico so we have seen few hotels already so we could compare a bit . If you’re a nature and animal lover this is place for you it’s surrounded by jungle with beautiful cenotes ( the most Beautiful one was the one near lobby where you could also sit a have drink it was our favourite place) but the others were nice too and also you could snorkel in some of them, plenty of animals literally everywhere 😍, there are ancient Mayan ruins and beautiful area in the jungle for night shows and Mexican street food , you can borrow bikes and explore the resort . Beach is beautiful but rocky but if you walk further down there are some spots without rocks . The pools were overcrowded with families and we were trying to avoid them but if you family this place is definitely right place for you . There is aqua-park which has also bigger toboggans even adults can enjoy 🙃.Food and service were great as it’s all over Riviera maya so no complaints there , just the restaurants buffets were huge and the amount of people trying to get food was a bit overwhelming , so we we’re having our meals later to avoid queues. The best restaurant was the Brazilian steak house and we liked breakfast in the Italian restaurant. Room we had was standard in good quiet location. As were travelling for few nights away from hotel we decided to go for cheaper option. However no complaints at all room was nice and clean , good size with small balcony, shower had soap and shampoo in dispensers which was great , we had water tank in the room as it’s eco resort and small bar fridge filled up daily. We asked at reception for bathrobes and slippers which came without any problems. Also the location is really close to Playa del Carmen where you can take taxi for 200 pesos also close to lots of other attractions. I would definitely go back to this hotel and we had really nice and relaxing time also the price is reasonable for what you get there. Well done Caracol 🙃!
Fantastic Place for Nature Lovers!
If you love animals, you will love this resort! The resort is in the middle of the jungle, so there is lots of wildlife and beautiful tropical scenery! We saw birds (including waterfowl, peacocks, and a pelican), fish, turtles, coatis, raccoons, iguanas, agoutis, anoles, monkeys, and feral cats. We were in heaven! We did do an outside excursion to go snorkeling in the ocean one day, but you realistically could keep entertained staying solely at the resort. We snorkeled in the main cenote next to the hotel and saw cool fish and turtles. The food was good - our tip is you can go to the steakhouse in the Royal Elite section after 6 pm. The food there was EXCELLENT, by far the best on the resort, and they had a great mariachi band one night we were there. There is entertainment every night on the resort - we did some live band karaoke and there was a cool Michael Jackson tribute in the theater (unfortunately we only caught a little bit of that). There are huge family-friendly areas (great kids pool area), but as we were a couple, we mostly stuck to the Adults Only Select areas - our room was a short walk from the Adults Only pool, which was very quiet. (Admittedly, this was right at the beginning of the coronavirus scare, so it was probably less crowded than typical). The Adults Only beach area was great, with big beds on the beach to lounge on and hammocks, etc. The Adults Only sections have premium alcohol, but honestly, my top-shelf-picky boyfriend had no complaints about any of the bar areas in the resort. There are a few cool ruins on the property you can walk or bike to. There is a little farm-animal area where rescued farm animals live (pigs, sheep, bunnies, a donkey, etc.) There is a feral cat colony & the ferals go wherever they want - we had a few that were our buddies that we ran into several times during our stay. Our favorite area was the Deer Park, where a herd of deer are kept amidst a bunch of iguanas and coatis and monkeys! You are not supposed to feed the animals, but on our last day we gave the coatis and monkeys a few pieces of fruit and they were all over us. A very precious memory indeed to have 2 wild monkeys reaching up to hold my wrist. I loved the coatis - what a cool little animal that I never knew existed - kind of a mix of a raccoon, anteater, and monkey! And the agoutis were fascinating too - kind of a mix of a little deer and a rodent. There is only one reason I didn't give this resort 5 stars, and that was the beach. Although beautiful, it was rocky and not very welcoming for swimming. My boyfriend ventured out a few times, but I only went in once and found it hard to walk (even with water shoes). I wish we had done a day trip to the sister resort Playacar, because the beaches look awesome there. I enjoy being out in the ocean with a sandy bottom, and this resort does NOT have that - we did not walk farther down to see if the adjacent resort was any better (although I heard it was). My boyfriend took his snorkel gear out there one day but was not impressed - he said the water was cloudy right off the resort. So, other than the ocean area being not really good to go in, we had an awesome stay at this resort. Also, just a warning to travelers - don't get roped into people at the airport trying to get you to do a tour of their hotel in exchange for a free excursion. We stupidly listened to one of these people, and although got a free excursion, it was huge waste of precious vacation time.
Beautiful resort, even better staff.
My boyfriend and I decided to take our first all-inclusive vacation at Sandos Caracol Eco Resort in February of 2019 and we were not disappointed. With many activities to choose from and most of them being free, we always had something to do. Drinks were great and service was quick. The only downside was the beach was pretty rocky, so it was difficult to swim without water shoes. (It was still beautiful though.) Food was delightful and there are many restaurant options. We spent most days at the buffet due to our eating habits and were completely satisfied. What topped off our trip was the friendly staff and very fun and interacting entertainment team. To our new friends Ricardo and Emilio, you guys made our trip! Thank you so much for getting us out of our comfort zones and trying to involve us in all of your daily activities, we had a great time! We would definitely recommend this resort to our family and friends, and will absolutely be back in the future!
