Day 1 impressions
I’m at the start of my vacation and thought I’d share my first impressions. I should mention that we opted for the goldband plus option (so I’m not sure if the other rooms and amenities are putting people off). Location - 5 minute drive from the airport. Rooms were prearranged, so you can head to the pools and beaches right away. I think this was my fav start to a vacation! Hotel - it is very big, well manicured. Room was spacious and comfortable. Your room keys are actual metal keys, so that’s peculiar (but charming in a 1980’s sort of way). We had a welcome fruit plate and bottle of bubbly. The fridge was stocked with soft drinks and beer - and we are a 2 minute walk to lobby 3 if we need drinks or snacks. Staff - I had read some negative comments from past reviews. I had not experienced anything but helpful and friendly staff. Food and drink. Decent. By comparison to 5* resorts, it’s not quite there, but still good. We were able to get a casual lunch despite being arriving between restaurant hours. Covid19 - the hotel has hand sanitizer everywhere, and is making clear efforts to keep people safe. At the time I’m writing this, Covid19 was declared a global pandemic. The NBA and NHL has just suspended the season. At any rate, bravo to the Royal Decameron for its efforts in this regard. I’ve included the pool view from our balcony. Ok, that’s it for now.
Decameron the good and the bad
Good things: I found staff generally to be nice and trying, even if you do not speak Spanish, never had the feeling of being treated differently. Beach is nice, pools are clean, drinks are good, rooms are old but nice and clean. Food was ok I always found something to eat. Evening program is very nice with dancing and movie playing. The hill is not as bad as many described but can be tough on people with limited movement. Bad part: ocean is not the best, water was a bit cold and tide is pretty strong, you cannot really see more than few centimeters below surface servers in a la carte restaurants were just bad, in contrast with other staff they just did not care...we waited 20 min for wine which we had to order at least 3 times...(exception would be Catch of the Day and Kon-Tiki) Pools are open only from 9-5 which seems ridiculous (with exception of one pool which is open till 10 pm). The Plus portion of the hotel is getting bigger which means that if you do not pay extra you can use only 3 pools. despite what picture says the pools are not as big as it seems as half of them are "reflecting pools" with water just around your ankles. The trips: we went for 2 trips one Panama City+Canal, the second to Tropical rain forest. Panama city was a nice trip although our guide was not the best at English(more guides speak French) but she was trying really hard it just seemed she was inexperienced but nice person. the trip to forest was worse the guy (call me "Whiskey") was just terrible, he never told us where we are going/what we going to see and always rushed us to next thing. just overall bad guide. To sum up both trips were good but I felt like it could have been one trip. for the price(they are not cheap at least 100 USD) I would like to see better guides and a little bit better service, this needs to improve significantly SUM UP the hotel is nice and it seems they are trying but they need to improve the trips and maybe rethink the pool policy ( I would rather have 2 pools open till 8 than one open till 10)
It was ok
Went the last week of February. Party of 8. Let’s start with the pros, big resort. 3 pools. Nice beach. Close to the airport (5 minutes) able to manage to find something to eat every meal. Nightly entertainment was better than some places I’ve seen at other resorts. Got to visit a new country and see the Panama Canal. The maid was attentive and gave us extra water upon request. You will need to speak Spanish to speak with the maids. The cons. 90% of the staff had little care for English customers. Service and attention catered more to the Spanish/Latin guests. We were able to manager but saw roadblocks for many other guests that know no Spanish. Unable to accommodate allergies. One person was allergic to onions and I’d average 75% of the foods had onions. The a la carts we asked for just a plain chicken breast without the stuffing which had onions, they said ok but it never came so that person went to the buffet. The food was interesting but by day 4 we learnt that you have to eat where you see the entertainment workers. The buffets change the food and I’d assume the entertainment workers know where the “better food” was being served. Good tip if u visit this resort. There are lots of hills and waking and probably not the best for people with walking issues. There are mini vans on property and I commend the drivers for not hitting anyone!! But note, if you don’t have an ocean view room; there is a hilltop of rooms with a steep incline of about 50 steps to get to the beach/pools. They don’t allow drinks in the pool, ok I get that is moreso because people spill their drinks. However, if you have a pool, you factor in drinks in the pool and u add more chlorine. You can’t drink water in the pool. It is ridiculous. They will let you take a cup with a lid but this can spill too (just FYI) The main pool water was milky by the end of the day from the amount of people so why not allow drinks? The most weird practise I’ve ever seen Also note that when you fly home, carry something to eat. We got to the airport at 12:30, flight at 4:30. No duty free or food in airport and our flight home ran out of food. There are two vending machines with water and chips so you can bring change. 9 hrs without eating. That is a lost opportunity by the airline and airport. Very disappointing way to end the trip home Overall it was an ok trip. The temp averaged 40° everyday and it was sunny 6/7! Think Dominican Republic meets Cuba = Panama DeCameron
Nice but needs improvement
Just returned from a 10 day trip from Panama. We upgraded to the Plus package. The room was nice. Clean but basic. Only soap and shampoo given so take conditioner, lotion etc. Hair dryer in room, No iron but was given one after asking. Mini-bar stocked with beer/water/pop. There was also a dehumidifier in the room which made a huge difference, but it filled up very quickly. The staff, for the most part, were very friendly. The tried to speak English as much as possible but it helps if you know a bit of Spanish. The food in the Plus buffet was excellent. We tried most of the a la carte restaurants and they were all great. After 7 days they closed the Plus buffet for breakfast and lunch. We tried the Kontiki restaurant for breakfast and was not as good. When asked what the reason was for closing the Plus buffet they told us there were not enough guests. We saw other Plus guests going to the buffet after trying the Kontiki. They should have kept the Plus buffet open regardless of how many guests. We booked 2 tours with the Decameron Explorer. The Panama Train and Anton Valley excursions. The Panama Train tour was over 13 hours with just over an hour spent on the train. Not worth it! The Anton Valley Tour was only slightly better but still not worth it. Overall a good place to stay but there are many areas for improvement.
Fabulous 11 days!
5 Minutes from the airport is very nice! Check-in is done at the airport, you get your key (actual key) and welcome package. Once you arrive at the resort, there are bell boys and shuttles available to take you to where your room is. Depending where your room is located you are "assigned" either Lobby 1, 2 or 3. At these lobby's is where you will book your A la Carte Meals, put a deposit down if you want to have a second key to your room (we did this), and also get the key to the safe in your room. Our Room was located near Lobby 2. Wifi is available for free at the lobby's, but you can pay am additional amount to have it all over the resort. The rooms are a little dated, but they are kept very clean, again, we aren't there to hang out in our rooms. We enjoyed meals at the buffets and some of the a la cartes, they were all very good. The only thing we did not like, was sometimes you would make your way to one of the buffets only to be directed to another one because that one was full, minor inconvenience. We hung out at the beach most of time, and the weather was fabulous the entire time. Always lots of life guards on duty. The bar staff was always quick, and knew how to make great drinks. Special mention to Vivianna for making the best bloody Mary's while we were there! And to Juan in Lobby 2 for making great evening drinks for us! We did an excursion while were there, the old city and Panama Canal. What a great trip, definitely worth the money! Reminder, this resort is very big, and built into a hill. Shuttles are available to help those with mobility issues. We did not mind the stairs or the hills. And yes, this is Panama and everyone speaks Spanish. However, any staff we encountered could speak some english. But what better way to work on Spanish than to practice with them, and they are more than happy to engage, because they are also working on learning english. We had no problems! Recommendations: Every Lobby should have their coffee bar open in the mornings, Lobby 2 was never functioning. All buffets should be open for Dinner, to avoid over crowding and being re-directed to another area of the resort.
